- STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The opening of a new migrant shelter at the former St. John Villa Academy has been met with days long protests as hundreds of borough residents continue to voice their fervent opposition to the use of the former school to help house the city’s influx of migrants.
In Episode 53 of the “From the Scene” Podcast, host Erik Bascome is joined by City Hall reporter Paul Liotta to discuss New York City’s migrant crisis and the outrage it has sparked here in the borough. (Video: Jason Paderon)

The right to shelter should apply to citizens, the same as other rights.
The original law established in 1979 was meant for NYC homeless men.. It was never meant for non citizens. In 1980 the law was applied to homeless women. In 1981, the law was expanded to homeless NYC families. During these years housing homeless migrants were not an issue during that time frame.

He talked about Texas sending illegal immigrants north because they don’t want to deal with them. He tries to make it look like Texas is dumping their problem on New York. The truth is the illegals sent north are just a small portion of the problems on the border. This was an attempt to alert the rest of the country to what Texas and other border states have been facing for years. Let’s face it, most people in the north were indifferent to the problem until it showed up on THEIR doorstep.
Just don't house them. Put them on an isolated island.
Right to shelter should apply to American citizens. Change the LAWS. The NY citizens should put the referendum on the ballot to the vote.

In the 1980's Ed Koch declared NYC as a 'sanctuary city' status for the 5 boroughs. The rest of NYS is not and cannot be forced to allow this status despite threats by Mayor Adams. They chose to choose to welcome undocumented immigrants as part of there Ellis Island history that stopped in 1954. It was in service for 62 years welcoming European immigrants who entered by signing into historic logbooks. Foreign criminals were not allowed to take up space on these perilous long journeys.
The reason there is a lot of pushback in this particular part of the city us because they are the only borough that votes red for the most part. They don’t want ( for the most part) the policies the rest of the city support. Other Boros are also protesting. Many communities petitioned Adams to drop sanctuary city but of course he did not. The other shelters did not receive as much push back as this one because this is way too close to four schools especially the all girls high school. Majority of people coming to the city are young men. What parent of a young female wouldn’t speak out? Since Staten Island has pockets of neighborhoods that are not as diverse it’s been labeled as not wanting diversity. If you actually get to know the people there it’s more safety and economics. The buildings on that campus are also in poor shape. Hence one of the reasons the school closed. The former boro president promised it would be renovated and kept an educational complex. Then he took a job in the Adams administration in the department of buildings. There’s a part of the story no news source is telling. It’s not open and shut. It’s reported on very poorly. It’s far more complicated tgat people want to believe. Also the Hungerford building is in awful shape. Yet I see no outrage from migrant supporters about the conditions they see in some shelters. It goes both ways. They can’t say they support and do nothing. Churches are saying they support but very few are physically opening their doors. Most people involved will say if there was a better betting process they’d be more comfortable. And although it’s a slippery slope we can’t blame people for fighting for their property and their children’s safety. There is a septic truck that comes daily to empty the out door showers and toilets because the old buildings have plumbing issues. How many supporters will offer their homes. Their bathrooms? Ive spoken to people in all sides. You really don’t get the true story unless you do that. News is convoluted. It’s sad in many ways. And of course it costs alot of money to live in NYC. They were literally shut down way longer than other places so that hurt financially. And comparing the large state of Texas to a city is inappropriate. Definitely not enough room and NYC has had over 100,000 so far and more to come. A lot of work needs to be done here. The state and federal government need to step up.
I feel for these people, but the message needs to be heard. It should never have come to this if our President hadn't decided to throw open our border. If they're just here to work or other non-urgent reason, they need to go home, except maybe the few coming from extreme hardships. We are overwhelmed by people who are here illegally and we don't even know their backgrounds. Realistically, how can we take care of these people when we can't even take care of our own. Our own homeless are even worse off by their presence. Communities have already experienced criminal behavior and aggression by some. Bottomline, this was an asinine move on Biden's part, and I think he's still saying the border is closed.

Yep, I am leaving my beloved house since 2011 bought at 3 1/4 % interest because of the way the influx of Latinos into it, are not taking care of their yards. We live in the desert and the yards become weed infested if not watered and mowed. This has caused the decline in the neighborhood and now I am buying a house for 8% interest. I can't wait to vote Democrat again!

The solution is easy. NYC can implement a Sanctuary City Supplemental property tax of say 20%. Also, expand the NYC income tax and add 5% to the sales tax. This will help cover the costs of "Right to Shelter."

The best memories I have was on the Island. Immigrants coming from God knows where. 200 people in Texas were arrested for human trafficking guess who they were.... you guessed it immigrants.send them home

I agree. I saw a story yesterday on MSNBC about a father who was crying because his son drowned, trying to cross the water to get to the border. Instead of coddling that man, I thought he should've been arrested for attempting to illegally cross the border and child endangerment. How dare they try to make us feel sorry or guilty for bad parenting.

I was one of those you saw in a cardboard box on the streets of Manhattan. WORKING. Found a room and then was homeless again when my rooming house was bought by an investor who turned it into a shelter! Word is, he gets gov $ which pays him 3x’s more then I could pay in rent! Rents went up 3x’s.
No affordable housing! In a blizzard I was back out on the street. Shelters are not safe. Fights, drugs, security scared. Curfew not conducive to working hours…Men peeping in while I showered. 😱
Left the city. Found another job in the suburbs. Still no affordable housing. Walked 10 miles every day back and forth from work to my tent in the woods... it was either that or quit my job. No transportation to the shelter when I got off work. No bed that late…No buses running. The shelters filthy bathrooms, out of order. Fortunate to get a shower at all. This shelter also fills up! Joined planet fitness. Lol 😝 returned to my tent. Bears, bobcats, deer, coons, snakes, & turtles were my neighbors. More homeless came needing coats, food, shelter, water, showers… I’ve had to fight off men too. Now in Spring Valley NY gangs, crack, prostitutes. Lots of illegals on the streets.
A couple weeks ago I was hit by a truck. He took off, probably no license. Many do have too much $$$.
And for the others, do you really think most these people will assimilate into society? Moving from place to place? No skills, can’t even speak English? Over here they want $20 an hour or won’t work. Sit day after day.
Now there’s police sweeps. That means not only are people homeless but in a life threatening situation, survival of the fittest. 🥺

I remember my father taking us there but we had to stay in the car, nor could I see it. Guards in blue uniforms with guns & a fence surrounded it.
We never took any free handouts.
