David Wells Not that I know of, just ragging on FC4. The game was Ubi standard, but the design of the player kukri was always a favorite of mine. Everyone else in the game lied to you or otherwise manipulated you, but the kukri and Pagan did exactly what they meant to, every time. Something refreshing about that...
Should be a workout video. Chopping wood with axe is pretty tough so just imagine doing it with a tool that's not intended for it like a kukri. Whew, Skall's gotta be hiding some massive back, shoulder, arm and chest muscles underneath those sweatshirts.
[Ecchi] Well, a kukri seems much better shaped for chopping. More of the weight is concentrated towards the end and tipped forwards, which would help with chopping. Obviously, you wouldn't use it to fell trees, but I think it would still be pretty useful
Is it though? The kukri has a handle so I can imagine that most of the weight is in that handle so you can swing it properly. And sure, it has pretty good wood chopping power, as demonstrated in the video, but that's compared to a sword, right? An axe is literally designed to chop wood since almost all of the weight is distributed to be in the blade, much more than the kukri.
I can definitely appreciate the general-purpose effectiveness of this Kukri you showed off. I mean, are there other, alternative tools and weapons one can use to do those jobs more efficiently? Sure, definitely. But the fact that you can still perform those tasks AT ALL is where it shines, in my opinion.
You think he didn't in this video? This is easily one of the most abusive streaks of testing I've seen Skall do. He just about smashed at anything that had a branch!
Seeing you cut the pumpkin/gourd like that makes me appreciate the sharpness as it's something I have experience with cutting (while cooking) maybe you can cut some leeks and other vegetables in a video? :p
I would watch a cooking with weapons video. Making a stew or something and using various swords and other weapons in his arsenal to cut the meat, onions, potatoes, etc.
Hey Skal, love your channel! I practice Pekiti Tirsia Kali, which sometimes makes use of the kukri. Many of our kukri feature a small serrated section close to the hilt. My teacher told me that an old tradition of Filipino and Indonesian warriors was that if your blade was drawn and did not taste blood, you must give it some of your own. The serrated edge was added for that purpose. Maybe the developers of FarCry 4 added it to capture some of the traditions of that area of the world, rather than some practical function they thought it might have.
Faithfuleddy Gaming Not really, no. A ginunting doesn't have the traditional shape compared to the other two whose styles remain true to the original. The Ginuntings and Panabas blades from TFW are not of traditional shape. If you look at thw traditional panabas, it's more of a sickle or kukri shape. A ginunting is more of a bolo shape, not inward curving like the kukri
Please test the Zombie Tools Vakra. I've got one and love it, but I want to know your thoughts on it. It was also rated as the best Kukri on the market by some magazine, can't remember which one.
not surprised to see this comment here. if i didn't find it, i was going to leave it myself. i also have the fistfull of fuckyeah and take it camping with me frequently. would love to see skall put that through some paces also
How does this compare to a standard Kukri? Like the $50.00 British Army one. In terms of weiight, balance, handle design, cutting, chopping, ease of sharpening, etc.
These things cost 427 Euros, that's not affordable to a lot of people, and when you can easily get something that's maybe not quite but almost as good for about 100 the price/performance ratio is pretty terrible.
This N690 which is a good steel for small knives but not often in big ones. Even the shittiest military surplus will be repurposed truck springs 5160 steel great for a beefy chopper. This blade would be quite agile whereas 5160 makes for a hefty chop. I suggest Kailash blades, blacksmiths not machines. They have modern and traditional designs for half the price
Jesse Fishinghawk With how they were stabbing with force, the blade didn't run all that deep. Throwing would do as the person above said, completely bounce off due to how the torso is made and the piping inside.
I bought one couple months ago and me and my dadda went on a world fishing trip. This kukri was oh so a breeze to sharpen and worked extremely well in the Amazon. I'm a 6'8 man and dad's 7'2 so so may find it heavy and unweildy, but I found it extremely light for me. Never the less it's worth the money most definitely
Holy me, that thing is expensive! Whenever I see something here that looks like something I'd like, it's either out of my price range, requires over 50 euro for UPS international or both. Why can't I have nice things! (Probably could, if I looked at French or German manufacturers buuuut it's not Skall-approved so...)
300$ on a machete? Seriously? My most expansive one was 35$ and it's still in good shape after more than 5 years of intensive use (as a tool, I'm not playing with tatami mats or plastic noodles). This idea that good steel is expansive is more of a commercial myth, it does cost a bit more but we're talking about a few bucks, the rest is just decorations and clever advertising. If you want an expansive toy to brag about it's one thing, but if you just need a good tool for brush clearing, wood chopping or camping you can order a Tramontina for around 30$, it's not fancy but it's strong and useful, big old piece of 1070 steel with a simple and comfortable wooden handle.
yeah, this price only makes sense if you look at it from the perspective of a sword collector (and even then it's still overpriced), you can get something that's just as functional for like a tenth of what this costs.
BTW if you search for a good tool machete avoid "tactical" designs, especially those from Cold Steel, they're too thick, unwieldy and poorly balanced for use as a tool. Also if you're not used to work with a machete don't start with a Kukri or Bolo type, they're harder to control, pick a mid sized (16-18") Latin design.
Arsalan Anwari: we're talking about different things man. A machete has it's specific uses, if you want to chop some logs an axe is better, but if you need to clear brushes or saplings from a couple of acres of land the machete is far better at it. Also for hiking and camping outdoors the versatile machete can successfully replace the usual knife & axe set, saving weight and space in your backpack. Swords are more expansive because of the much more complex manufacture, they're mostly hand made and require a lot of time and skill, so yes, a good functional sword is often worth it's price. As for chef knives that's mostly advertising as well. Granted that hand made ones require a lot of work, but commercial models are made with industrial equipment and production costs are very low, they're expansive only because of marketing.
Swords are also expensive because quality sword reproductions are niche items and the manufacturers can get away with charging that much, that's why for example, you can get a functional katana for $100 and a pretty good one for $300 wereas with a longsword you will be paying at least twice that (probably even more on the low end) Also labor costs vary a lot by location as well, which is why you can find decent south american made machetes for $10 if you look around whereas a US or European one wont even be close to that cheap. It's also why the actual Nepalese manufactured Kukuris are way cheaper than this.
You should use the 10% mixture for ballistics gel. It more closely mimics flesh. 20% is an FBI standard for simulating bone too. 15% is a pretty good middleground too, but 10% is the kind you see on shows that test bladed weapons.
The game has throwable knives too, and you can one-shot most things with them if you aim for the head. Putting that to test should be a good topic for a future video. :)
1: Yes, I am entertained! 2: I thought "throwable blade" when I first saw it, glad you tested that. 3: Since it's smallish, if you're going to chop wood with it, you could dual-wield and alternate :) 4: I like the 2 section blade design. Percussion blade for hacking/chopping, shaving blade for fine work. You could sharpen or profile them separately for their specific roles, very practical.
Skall, it's looking like your cut accuracy and edge alignment are getting much better! I particularly like the drawknife use of this blade.. If you have access to green wood, I'd be interested in seeing more tests using that medium for survival type blades..
The most obvious execution move with a kukri from the front is jamming it in the skull. The blade shape, weight and center of mass makes it almost as effective at that ask as a hatchet would be. From behind though, the inner curve of the blade just makes it the best throat slitter there is. Which is why I found the stabbing move in Far Cry ridiculous, when the throat cut was so goddamn obvious with such a weapon.
"the inner curve of the blade just makes it the best throat slitter there is" Not really, the most efficient way to slit someones throat is to stab in from the side right at the jugular vein and push outwards in one smooth motion, dragging the blade across the front of the throat like you see in movies and whatnot takes too long since you have to cut all the way back to the jugular to guarantee a quick kill.
I enjoyed it for the first week, one day when i came home from the woods i noticed something weird, it looked like scratches at first but with a microscope i can clearly see alot of microfractures, and i have only been bushcrafting, given it is winter here at -38 C
I want one of those. I used to have several large blades, including a Cold Steel Recon Scout and others like it. I sold them and I have only my Buck 119 left, but a nice Kukri sounds enticing.
I have now been using the KS, shorter model for about 2 years. Good tool for woods when you got a smaller blade with you, feels like a weapon and acts like a tool.
I'd love to see a video about Skall poking fun at a plethora of modern(ized) weapons that mainly exist because of cool factor, as well as lack of understanding of the original purpose (usually, weapons we see today evolved from mere farming tools). Personally, I'd show stuff like cutting grain with a "tactical kama," or digging dirt with a "tactical kunai."
I can think of a very good use for the saw tooth on the back of the blade. I use a billhook to clear patches of undergrowth when collecting wood for my stove. I find it somewhat tiresome to cut away things like wild rose or poison ivy and then have to rake those pesky vines aside which draws them closer to me, though only briefly. With a saw tooth on the back of such a blade I could push them aside quite easily. That would keep me out of the mess and reduce the chances of getting snagged by thorns, poisoned by the ivy or exposed to more ticks and chiggers. I don't think I want to modify my existing tool, but I may try making a new blade. I do have some old lawn mower blades I want to do something with.
I have a serious question. Have you tried or thought of oiling a blade before synthetic ballistic gel tests? I've done it and it makes a difference. I wouldn't consider it cheating as a very oiled blade is what I prefer out in a swampy area or heavy rain in Florida. That gel gives some serious "cling" or stick to a blade face which in turn harshly dampens a slice or penetration because it essentially grabs the blade. Just wondering 👍
I have one of these. It's truly a superior quality bush tool...but not really designed for combat, per se. Overall, that design and the Austrian steel performs very well, (but I've always found that for ourdoor bush tools, forged high carbon tool steel is the best for edge retention). But the fact that this steel won't rust away in a damp or salt air environment is a huge advantage. So, I gave it an 9 out of 10 overall - (the only potential failure mode may occur in the handle - it can get brittle in cold temperatures).
3:49 Now I want to see a video game where the "blade takedowns" are just like this. It would be hilarious to see a badass main character struggle to do a simple thing like stab a bad guy, only to realize that his weapon good for anything but stabbing.
I just have one question about HEMA; is it actually a good idea to thrust your head forward like that when stabbing? I've been doing shotokan karate for around five years, and we think it's extremely important to not do that, because, well, the opponent will just parry and strike our head if we do that
every test video be like: crazy man destroying innocent gel body and nature p/s: keep the good work mate, i really like it :)))

Because flesh has lots of fluids a blade slices and continues as the fluids lubricate. Ballistic gel doesn't have the fluids to lubricate. I've often wondered if you oil your blade how much more if any would it help the blade or arrow penetrate the gel? That seems to me like it would be a more realistic fleshy test.
When thrusting were u concerned that the hand could slip up? The handle doesn't have the ridge in the middle like a traditional kukri which usually prevents this. I know it has a guard, but the guard seems tiny and on one side only... Just curious.
I'd love to see a video of a Khopesh vs a large sickle (that is, almost unwieldy large) using various cutting tests and then a proposed sparring duel with stand-ins.
Im curious of ER Kukri KS vs ER Kukri KH. And I'm curious of an ER Kukri vs ER Selvans. Any interest in making these two comparisons into two videos? Thank you for your videos!
Some decent throws even though its not meant for throwing like you said, in your honest opinion would this make a good replacement as an in between for a hatchet and machete for a survival kit?
4:52 you’re putting in very strong hits but the stick is bouncing. If you rest it on a stump it will cut faster. Use the weight of the blade and swing it more like a blacksmiths hammer.
What a timely video! Far Cry 4 just came out 3 -days- years ago!
He's simply trying to cash in on that hype. ;)
Here's the thing though, this is actual quality DLC that we *actually wanted,* since the kukri was the best character in FC4 outside of Pagan Min.
J. Corson
Is this a pun to do with the coating on the blade
David Wells
Not that I know of, just ragging on FC4. The game was Ubi standard, but the design of the player kukri was always a favorite of mine.
Everyone else in the game lied to you or otherwise manipulated you, but the kukri and Pagan did exactly what they meant to, every time.
Something refreshing about that...
And for only $500.00 U.S., you too can slice Cantalope.
Big thumbs up for the music department, nice tune pal :)
yo u da guy who did tiddie armor
Is it runescape?
@metatron I know you are in to swords and knives. What is your unbiased opinion of this kukri?
1.5x Speed gets the blood rush lol
I like how with you its not all just about cool factor or fantasy. You genuinely show that the blade can be used as a good go to camp machete.
I'm so glad you wear gloves. Stabbing with something without a hilt makes me nervous.
It actually has a small guard that prevents the hand from slipping up onto the blade.
This was actually a really sick video. Nice work making blade testing so sick af...
Finally, another test video. Worth taking part of the notification squad for this one.
You should make an asmr video where you just chop wood with a sharp blade for 30 minutes
My thoughts exactly that sound is unbeatable
Just sharpening the blade would be good too.
Should be a workout video. Chopping wood with axe is pretty tough so just imagine doing it with a tool that's not intended for it like a kukri. Whew, Skall's gotta be hiding some massive back, shoulder, arm and chest muscles underneath those sweatshirts.

This seems like a pretty solid/useful piece of equipment.
Well Done.
Something therapeutic about listening you you wail on wood with a blade at 3:30 AM really cool looking blade
I like the voice-over. Gives more time to show the testing which is just extremely cool.
I love kukris for their chopping power but the Extrema Ratio KH is simply one of the most beautiful product designs I've seen.
I think I liked it more when you massacred half a forest in your vids
Mark Phillips bruh... theyre home to animals..
Mark Phillips bruh... theyre home to animals..
You think he didn't in this video? This is easily one of the most abusive streaks of testing I've seen Skall do. He just about smashed at anything that had a branch!
I have the Schrade Kukri. It came with a nice sharpening stone and a Magnesium fire starter kit. I am very happy with it
Far cry 4 is how the kukri became my favorite bladed weapon, after I saw it I read up on it and fell in love.
It became mine from the book of Eli
Seeing you cut the pumpkin/gourd like that makes me appreciate the sharpness as it's something I have experience with cutting (while cooking) maybe you can cut some leeks and other vegetables in a video? :p
I would watch a cooking with weapons video. Making a stew or something and using various swords and other weapons in his arsenal to cut the meat, onions, potatoes, etc.
Kooking with Skall, I like the sound of that.
And of course it has to be cooked over an open fire.... so he can cut his way through a small grove of trees for fuel.
Alex Button, you are onto something there,Skallgrim pay attention to this.
those r butternut Squash

Kukri were tools more than they ever were weapons. All this give the blade some blood bullshit is just that, a load of crap.
All those throws and not one crack or fail, especially in the handle. Nicely made blade.
Kukri vs khopesh video. Both having opposite blade shapes. One can deflect a blow while another can catch it
jose paolo Aranda and ginunting
Faithfuleddy Gaming Not really, no. A ginunting doesn't have the traditional shape compared to the other two whose styles remain true to the original. no kukri vs kopis you dumb as
Khopesh can be turned around, it works both ways. So...
Sawyer Utley You do realize that it's pretty much the same thing, right? Just from a different region.
Your blade geometry and skill level is growing kudos to you
Your videos are getting realy good now skall
SKAAALL I LOVE U IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS VIDEO FOR 2 YEARS
Please test the Zombie Tools Vakra. I've got one and love it, but I want to know your thoughts on it. It was also rated as the best Kukri on the market by some magazine, can't remember which one.

How does this compare to a standard Kukri? Like the $50.00 British Army one. In terms of weiight, balance, handle design, cutting, chopping, ease of sharpening, etc.
Probably not enough of an improvement to justify the massive price difference.
kidthorazine: They are still affordable, so whats the point?

British/nepalese army kukris are shorter, curver, thicker, heavier. This extrema ratio blade is much more on the machette side.
Why no throw at the torso
Jesse Fishinghawk With how they were stabbing with force, the blade didn't run all that deep. Throwing would do as the person above said, completely bounce off due to how the torso is made and the piping inside.
So, you think that kukries are gay?
Aldor That is one way to put it
cause he doesn't want that thing to bounce back in his face? xD
Thanks to you, I think I have the "Just Junk" commercial memorized. I always watch them to the end.
I appreciate that you explained the purpose of the foam tube.

That background music that starts at 0:30 is amazingly soothing. What's it's name?
1: Yes, I am entertained!
2: I thought "throwable blade" when I first saw it, glad you tested that.
3: Since it's smallish, if you're going to chop wood with it, you could dual-wield and alternate :)
4: I like the 2 section blade design. Percussion blade for hacking/chopping, shaving blade for fine work. You could sharpen or profile them separately for their specific roles, very practical.
Can you do more videos on Kukris?
I think I'm sold. The performance is awesome and it looks amazing.
could compare a piece of pork with skin against your balistic gel ?
that would clrearly explain in what ways the balistic gel is different ?
harrysarso He doesn't want to do that ;)
ThisNameCouldBeCreative OK why?
Tiege Hanley he's vegetarian/vegan
Tiege Hanley Because he is a vegetarian or vegan, cant remember which, and so thats why youll never see him use actual meat in his tests.
Hmm ok guys thank you.
Super sweet blade it looked like it was really sturdy nice cuts and throws too very satisfying to watch
Skall, it's looking like your cut accuracy and edge alignment are getting much better!
I particularly like the drawknife use of this blade..
If you have access to green wood, I'd be interested in seeing more tests using that medium for survival type blades..
do a recommended execution moves with the KH then.. should be fun.. wanna know how to "end him rightly" with a kukri..
Matt Bradock Eh I think they just wanted to save the effort by reusing the Far Cry 3 execution. Ubisoft is known for being pretty lazy, after all.
Hit them in the back of the head. That would probably do it...
Matt Bradock A chop to the back of the neck where the spinal cord is would be awesomely brutal as well
I enjoyed it for the first week, one day when i came home from the woods i noticed something weird, it looked like scratches at first but with a microscope i can clearly see alot of microfractures, and i have only been bushcrafting, given it is winter here at -38 C
go mid cabon steel instead of stainless steel.
2:35, I am entertained. Also, watching you cut stuff is relaxing for some reason.
Hi Skal, as Böhler N690 being a fairly unflexing steel, did you experience any chips oder other damages to the edge while testing? cheers
I like they way you did the commentary.
I love all the Friis appearances :)
Kukuri is our national weapon
Im liking the music there skall 👍
You make that blade look really bloody effective
Looks like a useful tool for both a camping trip and doing some spring cleaning in your backyard. ^^
so recently I trimmed down some tree branches in the tree with a rusty hatchet and seeing this cut through stuff brings back memories and flashbacks
seems like it's been a while since you've done a test like this. Cool!
Dude i was just playing far cry 4 and when i saw the notification i was like "mmm this is knife is familiar"...nice video btw
Thanks for the video..
I like this review video..
Its also in Dead island Riptide with the camo stripes
DNA GENETICS and dying light
this is a really good video man
Slightly tempted to send my limited edition Boker Applegate Fairbairn (one of 300), because it has an X-15T.N. blade.
Email him to see his desire to review it.
It's oddly satisfying when the blade is thrown and it sticks into the wood with that familiar thunk noise.
Never seen anyone chop wood with a knife
Ouchhhhh.......proper chopper and that's putting it lightly!! 😣💯
Great review brother!
I want one of those. I used to have several large blades, including a Cold Steel Recon Scout and others like it. I sold them and I have only my Buck 119 left, but a nice Kukri sounds enticing.
Looks like a useful blade, nice find Skallagrim.
God I focking love extrema knives. Seriously the best
I have now been using the KS, shorter model for about 2 years. Good tool for woods when you got a smaller blade with you, feels like a weapon and acts like a tool.
Kukri are my favorite knifes by far. I have never owned a knife but if I ever buy one it'll be a kukri.
Troublesome kukri is more of a weapon not a knife
What's you beef with pumpkins? I mean, I don't like pumpkins but I think you're pushing this thing a bit too far.
AlucardNoir He probably eats them after killing them. Seems that angry with them ...
That's not a pumpkin. It's a butternut squash
He doesn't have beef- he's a vegetarian.
He hates vegetables, that's why he chop them up alive, then ate them.
He's had to find other targets since the water bottles and milk cartons started unionizing and filing complaints.

The dev team received kukri as an end of project gift (not sure if it was everyone) but they were Gerber if I recall properly.
4:50 that looks so brutal! I like it!
Coooool a new skallarim video! :D
4:30 - 4:45 Fucking epic. Please do more of that type of edited footage. Very entertaining

That's why
FC3/BD tanto >>>>>>>> FC4 kukri
Never been this early, notification squad is over powered.
Glad that you're canon again. You rock :)
Shouldn't you be hunting rebels
Accelerator Even though I'm going through light speed it takes awhile to get around.
Grand Admiral Thrawn lol
plz nerf notification squad
I just have one question about HEMA; is it actually a good idea to thrust your head forward like that when stabbing? I've been doing shotokan karate for around five years, and we think it's extremely important to not do that, because, well, the opponent will just parry and strike our head if we do that
This is a gorgeous blade
I think the cutting wood parts of these videos are my favorite because it just requires so much brute force and aggression
Skall:"it shaves hair, quite easily... And,... With all parts-"
Me: O.O
Skall: "-Of the blade"
4:33
Skall: Me at 3am
Log: My meat
every test video be like: crazy man destroying innocent gel body and nature
p/s: keep the good work mate, i really like it :)))
You're not on the BC West Coast by any chance? Those woods look a lot like the stuff I have around me.
How did the edge look after that unsupported rattan? Unsupported bamboo beat my edges up a bit. The rattan being heavier might help tho.
When thrusting were u concerned that the hand could slip up? The handle doesn't have the ridge in the middle like a traditional kukri which usually prevents this. I know it has a guard, but the guard seems tiny and on one side only... Just curious.
Holy shit, i wanted to buy myself a kukri for christmas and then skall made a video of one
I am so glad I discovered your channel, Skall
I'd love to see a video of a Khopesh vs a large sickle (that is, almost unwieldy large) using various cutting tests and then a proposed sparring duel with stand-ins.
Im curious of ER Kukri KS vs ER Kukri KH. And I'm curious of an ER Kukri vs ER Selvans.
Any interest in making these two comparisons into two videos?
Thank you for your videos!
"But are you not entertained?!?!" God I love that quote cheers!🍻

Pouring coconut water cuts on the edge of coconuts.
Some decent throws even though its not meant for throwing like you said, in your honest opinion would this make a good replacement as an in between for a hatchet and machete for a survival kit?
4:30 Had me remembering Blinkin from Robin Hood Men in Tights fighting that pillar in high speed. Lol
I really love soundtrack Skall uses in his videos.
I am entertained. I just have a question regarding the end of the handle. Can it be removed and tossed?
I always found that knife to be an excellent looking blade. A little pricey for something I wouldn't use daily but very cool nonetheless
I'm sure a couple of alterations to the design could improve it, a more pointy tip and a heavier gauge of metal might make it more effective.
How do you sharpen the lower part of the blade? I always have problems to do it with a flat stone
4:52 you’re putting in very strong hits but the stick is bouncing. If you rest it on a stump it will cut faster.
Use the weight of the blade and swing it more like a blacksmiths hammer.
Looks like a great one tool option
