    The plastic filter housing drain tool is not used to release pressure but rather to drain oil from the housing. It just saves you from making a huge mess when removing the housing.

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Phil Dern cool. I guess it helped mine release pressure because when I removed the bottom cap, I stuck the plastic piece and once I did that, there was a sudden release of oil then removing the filter housing was a breeze at that point. Thanks for the input.

      Sudden release of oil caused by gravity...

  • @stevensevek6151
    @stevensevek6151 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    Many folks doing this for the first time will find your oil filter cap wrench to be grossly inadequate especially if it was put on way too tight. Get a Motivx # 2320.
    The plastic drain for the oil filter is not to release pressure. It's just to drain the oil from the filter housing to make less of a mess. The only time there is pressure is when the engine (& oil pump) is running.
    It's not 25 pounds of torque. It's 25 N•m (Newton Meters) which equals only 18 ft.lbs.
    And the drain plug on the oil filter cap should only be 10 ft.lbs.
    The only pressure in the filter housing is the spring tension holding the element in place. There is no air pressure or even oil pressure when the engine is not running.

      Yes, and he puts the ratchet extension into the plastic drain tool opening and uses new rubber washers for sealing up the filter holder and a lock nut for the oil drain.. 😵

    This is the only video that I have found that actually shows and explains that u need to remove the small round silver piece FIRST. Even the video video made by Toyota just emphasizes u need this special tool. Not one time do they mention the proper way to do it and where the small ring/gasket goes. Great video!!!

    • @PeterZafra
      @PeterZafra  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Private Sender yes. And the silver piece is to release pressure although other people say no. The plastic piece that comes with the filter I used to release pressure. Glad it helped you.

  • @condor5635

    Good video. Best not to have oil cap off unless you are actually filling. Just loosening and keeping it over the hole is adequate to equalize pressure and not create a vacuum. Hate to have anything go in the hole by accident. As mentioned pressure is not released at any point of this entire procedure - it drains the cartridge only for there is no pressure in the housing. There is a gasket as well for the drain bolt. Better make sure you have one on there. Lastly no way I would start with over 1.5 quarts low knowing that it takes 6.5 quarts and the filter housing being empty. Thanks for the video. Good looking Sienna

    Putting oil on the O-ring is for when you put it back together so it doesn't stick. If the metal is dry, the O-ring can be damaged when you tighten it all down. You should put it on the ends of the filter element as well.

    I was at Walmart, and I opened three boxes of this OEM Toyota oil filter. Yes, the number printed on the filter 15613 is different than the one on the box! Just go with the one on the box. The number on the box is for the whole set (filter, o rings, and drain nozzle). The number on the filter is for Toyota use and it's not cataloged for public use.

    Be careful of over tightening the oil filter housing, the Recommended tightening is 25 + or - 5 N.m(Newton Meters) not foot pounds. One N.m(Newton Meter) is equal to approximately 0.74 foot pounds. 25 N.m is approx 18.4 foot pounds.

    Spoken to many a Toyota mechanic. They don't mess around with the center piece at all. They also don't use the Toyota OEM wrench. They instead use this one: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00XTAGHU0/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    And they just remove the filter, never removing the middle part. The other thing that is good to remember is to torque the oil filter to the suggested torque which is very low at only 18 ft lbs.

    • @njsongwriter
      @njsongwriter 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's understandable because they are usually working by a flat rate and not by the hour. Thus they will take short cuts to make more money. That's fine but for teaching a novice how to do it the official method makes sense and is less messy IF done properly. It's your car do whatever you want. I'm retired and in no hurry and will follow the suggested procedure.

    • @bechtoea
      @bechtoea 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@njsongwriter The other reason most Toyota Mechanics don't pull the center section is it has a habit of breaking, especially if some monkey overtighened it. I neglected to say that part.

    By loobing the o rings, you reduce the chance of pinching and damaging the o ring as you have lubricated it. They changed the style of oil filter in order to reduce the number of diy people that change their own oil. If you make it more complicated, more people will take it to the shop for an oil change.

    The oil filter should be removed first, because it takes much less time to drain all of the oil out of the filter housing, than it does to drain all of the oil out from the oil pan! I always allow at least one to two hours to drain the oil from the drain plug! This way I get much more of the old oil out than I could, if I only let it drain for say, fifteen minutes!

    Always use a Toyota oil plug drain gasket. The reason you had to use so much effort to remove the plug was the gasket was missing, so it was metal to metal. Also the drain gasket seals better without over tightening.

    You keep calling the oil filter element a canister. It in not a canister. Some people call the housing a canister and at least that makes sense cause a canister contains something. Like a kitchen canister set has a number of canisters for storing flour, sugar, etc. The paper element is NOT a canister. It could be called a cartridge because this system is called an oil filter cartridge style system. The cartridge is what goes inside the housing or inside the canister.
    And all oil filters come with the plastic service pipe for draining the filter not just the OEM filter as you claim. Some push in and some screw in depending on the brand.
    And your drainplug or drainbolt is not called a lock nut. Jeeze is there any end to this...? It's one thing to make a mistake but twice you called it a lock nut. Do you even know what a lock nut is?
