    Very useful. Thank you.
    About to have a thyroid scan utilizing radioactive-iodine, and supposed to be on an iodine-free diet for 2 weeks before the test. Not sure about iodine content in salt (even with no mention of iodine by manufacturer), I had to eat salt-free food for 2 weeks the last time I had this test. Salt-free food experience was not that horrible, but was not that pleasant either! This time, with the help of this video, I will be able to test for iodine presence, so I won't have to give up salt again before the test ♥♥

      The reaction goes more quickly in acidic medium; therefore vinegar is added to provide a source of acid. If you try the experiment using vinegar instead of water and it works just as well, be sure to let me know this!

    So does this mean that Vitamin C can neutralize the Iodine in a person with hyperthyroidism?

    • @TommyTechnetium
      @TommyTechnetium  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question! The iodine (I2) in the body is in the form of iodide (I-). Therefore, it is already in the "neutralized" form.

    • @TommyTechnetium

      Hi Cassidy. My guess is that this will work. However, you might not be able to differentiate precisely between samples that vary just a little bit in the amount of iodide present. When doing this test, be sure to incubate all of your different samples at the same temperature, with the same amount of added peroxide, and for the same amount of time. Let me know how it works out for you.

      Iodine is in fish, in large amounts in some seaweed, in eggs when chicken had some iodine in their food.
      But you may develop iodine deficiency, especially if you are a vegan.
      You can buy iodine supplements and it is in some multivitamins also.

    • @watchingwaiting1804

      @@rreddingExactly. Iodine is in sea water, hence in fish / seaweed etc. Iodine is only present in veges or eggs if they have absorbed Iodine . Our topsoil is almost devoid of Iodine now, so usually nothing has it except fish / seaweed / etc.

    hi, whats iodated ?

    • @TommyTechnetium
      @TommyTechnetium  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sasho. Table salt contains mostly sodium chloride (formula NaCl). It also contains other additives. In some cases, sodium iodide (formula NaI) is added to salt. This is done because iodide is a necessary nutrient. Not all salt contains sodium iodide. Salt that contains sodium iodide is said to be "iodized".
