Great vid. Tried this grip out on the course today and even though it felt a bit strange and will take a few rounds to get used to, hit every tee shot straighter and a bit longer. Cheers 👍
Agree definitely a lot of simple clarity from Peter and probably explains why my shots are going left lately. Time to re-check my grip. Thanks for the post 👍
Thanks for this video. Especially when you said, when you make the adjustments, it will feel like you are going to hit it to the right and you until you get used to it. I have always had an interlocking grip. Never really had instruction on the grip. For years my left hand has been weak, left thumb mostly down the shaft. Right hand has always been a slight strong, a little to the right.
This is so important. The lower hand position is so crucial for me. I discovered that I had the club more in the palm in an attempt to gain ‘control’. It destroyed my swing speed and forced me to try to gain distance with my arms and caused casting. A lower hand grip which is much lighter by being in the fingers suddenly released all the tension and I learned what a pure strike sounded and felt like. Once you do that, youll never want to return.
This guy has a beautiful grip. Tip number 4 is priceless. I have been teaching that for years. I heard Ken Venturi talk about the base knuckle of the thumb and the base knuckle of the forefinger lightly touching on both hands. Great video!

Peter, excellent video. I have a question on the right forearm. I ask because I have a lateral tendonitus in the elbow (not the medial, golfer's elbow) and I thought it was the grip being too weak. However, I'm thinking it's the awkaward forearm pointing up while gripping. This need to throw the forearm through in the downswing. Any thoughts on how your forearm should be turned relative to a strong or weak right hand grip? Do you have video on this?
I don’t have a video on it and of course I’m not a physio. It could be grip tension. Also if your right arm is moving correctly it shouldn’t create pain. I don’t think I have a video specifically on this, although I have created quite a few explaining how our right arm moves.
An excellent explanation of the proper grip, thank you. I actually stumbled onto this grip when I had a painful blister on my left hand and adjusted my grip to relieve pressure on the blister. Despite the pain played a surprisingly good round that day. Habit makes me revert to my old lazy style grip so from time to time I need to remind myself. I'm subscribing:)
Great tips. Just starting to play golf more than just to drink with buddies lol. My left hand grip is ok but I've been using my right hand all wrong. Thanks so much.
Good insight into grip thanks. Only thing thats annoying about golf videos on the internet is they completely leave out left handed players almost like they dont exist. I understand you just have to reverse everything buts its confusing sometimes
I'm very inconsistent with my irons and having watched this video, I went to the Driving Range and altered my grip as described. I hit about 50 balls at specific targets and was more than a little surprised at my accuracy. I hope it"s not a flash in the pan could be a game changer for me. Many Thanks.
Great vid. I was nearly there in my pursuit of understanding a proper grip, but it was the part where the trail hand covers the lead hand thumb on the shaft that really hit home for me. Much more control of the club and little to no room for slipping or movement. I wasn't wrapping the trail hand around enough. Could still see my lead hand thumb on the shaft at address. This feels a lot nicer. Thanks a lot
I hit my Driver very solid, however very inconsistent. Pull hook or high slice to the right. Occasionally I'll get it right in the middle. Very frustrating. I will let you know the results.
Peter Knight Golf Thank you! You explained the grip so succinctly it was really nice to see and this will really help a lot of people. Great channel! Keep up the good work.
How do you feel about interlocking the pinky finger? That's what I've always done and it's so difficult not doing that I gave up .... I usually hit them pretty straight and with my irons and my chipping I do GREAT... But with the driver I have a pretty bad slice sometimes... Could that have anything to do with my grip or the pinky interlocking?
As long as the club is held correctly in the fingers of the right hand I have no issue with an interlocking grip. Your slice will be a combination of swing path and club face at impact. Your grip can influence this, however without seeing your grip or swing I can’t be sure.
@@PeterKnightGolf thank you so much for the reply... It's not all the time.. eighty five per. of the time I hit them straight .... But when I do slice I can not feel what it is I'm doing to make that happen? I keep feeling like maybe I'm opening my hips too soon trying to hit it too hard but after watching this i was wondering if my grip is slipping at the top of my swing because of the interlock? ... Next time I go to the range I'm going to get some baby powder spray and spray it on the club face for every single hit until I slice one and see where I hit the ball... I figured if it's showing I hit it too the right of the club then I'm opening too soon??... Again thank you for the reply I really liked your presentation and will subscribe
@@PeterKnightGolf yeah I didn't think about that .... I need to get lessons.. I basically taught myself and watched videos like yours and now have a handicap of about twelve to fifteen that I know I can get better ... And it's those off shots that I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong that I think I need someone, like you said, to watch what I'm doing wrong in those instances.... Thank you again for the conversation
Question: After years of turning wrenches, I've developed arthritis in my thumbs. It's extremely painful to cover my left thumb in my grip, so I wrap my thumb around, much like a baseball style grip. Aside from that, the rest of my grip is identical to what you've shown. Me question is, is wrapping the thumb around the club an issue?
I can’t hold the club totally in the fingers with the top hand like that. I have about a 105-110mph driver club head speed and holding it too much in the fingers causes the grip to slip in my fingers during the downswing before contact about 50% of the time. I have the grip further up from my pinky still below the pad but above the pinky I get a way more secure grip and I can really rip at the ball and don’t have to worry about the handle slipping.
iv gotta use this. i notice my club head is closed after my swing and it feels my grip changes during my swing which causes me to go from squared to closed club head
overall great advice. Shortterm you will lose distance and confidence in all your shots, except putting. Longterm it will improve your game consistently with a proper grip position. Caution. If golf was easy and doing this was easy we would all shot under par. I've been playing golf all my life. I've known this information for decade's. In saying that it's easy to show. Hard to repeat .
Genuinely cant get my head around knuckles touching..almost seems impossible on right hand..am I missing something...you need slow mo close ups at very least!
David Ledbetter says the exact opposite in his book. He says do Not run the shaft between fingers and palm, but rather more in the palm. I tried it and I got more power and better direction. I held it like he is recommending for years. Always tore up my golf glove on the heel.
Nigel Freer I didn't wear one for years either. I do feel a little extra security against slipping when I wear a glove. I don’t wear one for chipping or putting.
There is no right or wrong way to grip a club. Pro's often shape their shots which means they twist the club face in relation to the plane of the ball.
@@PeterKnightGolf "Maybe?' You have a professional opinion about the grip and it is different then so many really good players/teachers. How come no one gets better? The average handicap in the USA has moved from 15.7 to 15.3. All the tech, perfect ball and of course great teachers, and no change. :Look at the senior tour. No 0 handicapper at 40 quit his job, worked his talented butt off and is out there now. Just the same old crew with all different bodies and grips. There should be a class action against the PGA for all the $$$ spent with no result. Just longer, harder courses because all the tech benefits only the best!
Give me views and pay me money to help you be confused! Ignore that all of my "fixes" can be found being ignored by tour players, let talk about how Billy here doesn't teach any professionals. Do you? Do you teach one single professional? Why do you think that is?
Deepak Mirchandani you’re so disgruntled by those 2 minutes that you took another 2 minutes to write a complaining comment. I’ll bet your grip sucks, like your game. Maybe you should listen to the sage advise instead of whining and displaying your pathetic lack of attention span!
Why would you try to reinforce the BAD grips instead of the good by showing them? The last thing anyone who is struggling with their game needs is to see how not to do it. If you really want to help stick to the right way. A good teacher should not have to be told this.
ah yes the Hogan Method, I'm currently debunking this shit... stop holding the club in your fingers, you DO NOT HIT A BALL WITH YOUR FINGERS. Oh dear here we go again... holding in your fingers means you hit it with your back... TW learned about that... 4 back ops laterrrrrr ...... you people will never learn.... I hit the ball DEAD STRAIGHT every time... I hit the ball further than you too...... and I'm 60.
Great explanations except the bonus 4th - knuckles on same hand touching each other ? I have tried to figure out what you mean by this - taken literally it is impossible. Must be a better way to communicate this 4th item?
@@port3f9 my only thought here is my reference to Tiger Woods 4 back operations. Other than that, I am not sure what else you are referring to. My grip is the Yip grip. A term I coined a few years ago. You won't find any other reference but me. I start with the Vardon grip, left thumb pointing straight down the shaft and over on the right side very slightly. Wrap your fingers so they touch the venus mound on your palm, hold it in the hand not the fingers, as with the standard grip you should be able to see the 2 knuckles on the left hand. Take your right hand put your little finger in between the first 2 fingers, grab the left thumb with the right hand. Wrap the right thumb around the shaft. Do all this in front of your eyes. GRAB the club HARD... if anything moves, reset and try again until you have a solid grip, with no movement. Then set the club behind ball, take your stance and GRAB THE EFFING THING checking for movement and alignment. If your body reacts, reset and try again until you get no movement from your hands or body... now you're in a posture that is square. I recommend a slightly wider than the shoulders stance. This sets the spine angle to hit up on the ball. This is important because THIS swing wants to get very Flat at the bottom. You vary the angle of attack by how far back you take the club. Shorter take away, steeper angle of attack. Straight arms, take away by rotating at the knees onto the back foot without moving anything else. When you are on, and inside your back foot Rotate at the hips. When you can't rotate on your hips, rotate the shoulders. When you can't rotate shoulders, cock wrists. Until you work out the Plane, I recommend staying Higher, Don get flat at the Top. Now we do something EVERYONE else tells you not to do.... CAST at the Top. Throw the club into your "V" . Throwing into you V is reversing the take away. So throw the club with the hands into your forearms, straighten your right elbow... By now the club wants to ROTATE YOU... go with it, turn using your feet to help the ROATATION... Timing, 1, 2 and 3... The End Point is a swing that uses no effort. Yet drives the ball a long way. This swing works just as well with irons, but use a shorter take away to vary that angle of attack... The swing is perfect for wedge play too ... I even use it for putting. Stand open for putting using just your shoulders. Strong eye behind and above the ball.

Wrapping your thumb is no issue, especially as it avoids pain. Yours is a great example of adapting to specific needs.

Thank you for the reply, even though I'm a year late.
Can you explain what Tiger wears middle ring cover in his right hand for?
Probably to protect those fingers as they get a lot of wear from practice.
Great video peter , where are u situated?
I’m at Yarra Bend Golf Course in Melbourne.
Great video 🤔
Just found you. GREAT INFO!!!
What about you pinkys, interlock or overlap?
Either is fine as long as the fingers of the right hand are placed correctly.
As long as you’re close to what’s correct, go with what works for you.
It would be nice if you have closed up to your demonstration so we can see how you place your hand on the grip
That’s a good idea for another video. Thanks,
thanks
Nicely presented
I interlace my left pointer finger and right pinky finger, always have since I was 5 years old
Interlocking grip worked for Nicklaus and others. I started that way too, but not when I was 5! Keep going with what works for you.
In all that grip videos I’m always missing the relation to the clubface
Whatever happens with the hands is reflected in the clubface.
iv gotta use this. i notice my club head is closed after my swing and it feels my grip changes during my swing which causes me to go from squared to closed club head
Yes, that’s really common.
All good
overall great advice.
It's easy to get comfortable with a bad grip. I did. The right grip usually feels weird. Striking the ball much more square now.
I always wonder why dont they build a golf club that feels good in the hand and squares the club face.
This video might safe you a few dollars in gloves.
Grip is important.I had a recent lesson only on grip and I went 50m further.
Great result. Well done.
Peter I grip the club as prescribed but what you haven't mentioned is the actual position of the hands on the grip !
+Colin Day Here’s a video that will help out. th-cam.com/video/u3M1GfpeqrA/w-d-xo.html Good golfing.
Where are you on the benefits or otherwise of wearing a glove? I haven’t worn one for years. Should I?
Nigel Freer I didn't wear one for years either. I do feel a little extra security against slipping when I wear a glove. I don’t wear one for chipping or putting.
Nigel Freer the main advantage is when you scratch your ass your finger don’t smell✌️
In addition you want your “grip” to be flat , level and vertical to the plane at impact
Cheers
Fred Negus Sounds like a Golfing Machine comment. :)
Peter Knight Golf
It is indeed Peter.
If it feels weird, you're doing it right
Haha. That’s a common response.
👍
Iv used baseball grip for years .you have all ten fingers on the club
The baseball grip is popular. As long as your hands are placed correctly it doesn’t matter how they are linked.
@R Anderson grow up.
👍👍👍
Another words play your golf the way you feel comfortable with
Since he is Australian, does he have a Vegemite sand wedge ?? 😎
Of course I do!
Base knuckle, 4 finger, ring finger of the second digit, over the bass of the palm, and See how my right hand moves the club? Are you kidding me!!
Get on with it
Pros review the basics constantly. Else they play like all the hackers out there on the courses.
death grips ?
This explains why my skin came off my right thumb 😅
Ouch!! Hopefully you won’t need any more band aids.
There is no right or wrong way to grip a club. Pro's often shape their shots which means they twist the club face in relation to the plane of the ball.
How bout a zoom
Swipe it sonny

The algoritme didn't take into account that i fucking hate golf!!!!
if i did those things id be better off to use my putter for every shot. I dont recommend any of this
Check out : Ben Hogan the Hawk and look at how high he grips the club in his left hand. So who to believe?
swingtrade2 Maybe Hogan’s was an adaptation to prevent the hook shot which plagued his early years.
IQ
Way way way too much talking and your standing 10ft away for 95% of the video ....It's a gold grip video, close ups please.
Give me views and pay me money to help you be confused! Ignore that all of my "fixes" can be found being ignored by tour players, let talk about how Billy here doesn't teach any professionals. Do you? Do you teach one single professional?
Why do you think that is?
Get to it - why does it take almost 2 mins to start getting the instructions?
Deepak Mirchandani you’re so disgruntled by those 2 minutes that you took another 2 minutes to write a complaining comment. I’ll bet your grip sucks, like your game. Maybe you should listen to the sage advise instead of whining and displaying your pathetic lack of attention span!
Why would you try to reinforce the BAD grips instead of the good by showing them? The last thing anyone who is struggling with their game needs is to see how not to do it. If you really want to help stick to the right way. A good teacher should not have to be told this.
Way too much talk. Not enough demo.
Camera work very poor
ah yes the Hogan Method, I'm currently debunking this shit... stop holding the club in your fingers, you DO NOT HIT A BALL WITH YOUR FINGERS.
When you are on, and inside your back foot
Rotate at the hips.
So many bla..bla...bla.. why not just show the correct grip and what not to do?
