Season 4 Episode 8 "You Don't Want to Know"
House encounters a magician (Steve Valentine) whose heart fails when performing an underwater escape act. While the remaining fellowship candidates work to diagnose him, House is determined to prove he is a scam artist faking his ailments to cover up the fact he nearly drowned during his act. In the meantime, House pits his team against one another in a challenge involving Cuddy, granting the winner immunity from elimination and a chance to nominate two other candidates to be put on the chopping block.

I just now understood the test. House knew no one could get the underwear without being in cahoots with Cuddy. He wanted to see which one of them would be the most willing to work with Cuddy to undermine him.

They could steal the underwear without her noticing..like breaking into her house. Which coincidentally is a very useful skill in house's team. Basically he was just expecting them to think outside the box by his own ridiculous standards.

In light of how his character arc ended, people were looking for a reason as why things happened the way they did. The only solid explanation is this scene right here, where he finds out that the Dean of the hospital does not want him. That, coupled with the other reasons as to why the rate of a certain something in the medical profession is significantly higher than the normal population, lead to the end of the character :(

AlChestBreachFan7 that’s one interpretation of it, but I also think the writers wanted to do something that wasn’t completely out of the blue /based on real events in doctor culture. Hell, their cases are based on real illnesses.

The guy was an idiot. He should have suspected that as soon as House asked him how did he get the thong he needed to think carefully about a convincing answer or he was going to suspect him. Not only he didn't think about that but he also couldn't come up for a reason to justify Kutner or straight up say someone else and tell Cuddy that House didn't fire Kutner despite asking House to do so.
Then why he would not have picked 13 or Taub? You don’t risk the person you are closest in a group since even if you are sure they won’t be picked it would hurt their feelings. And he solved this case so there was no justification.
I love Amber's little self-reassuring nod right after Foreman says "it's how I got hired". it's like she 's saying "good. all i needed to know". she wasn't seeking validation or approval for their morally ambiguous AT BEST quest for Cuddy's thong, she just wanted to know wether it truly secured the job of whoever got the thong. lmao.

In the reality, House hired Foreman because he was a car thief and opened the locked car doors. His criminal record helped him to get the attention of House in the job application. I think it was a worse situation than getting the job by stealing Cuddy's pantie. 😅😅

House wanted someone who knew things about the downtown and criminal underworld (as it were). Cameron and Chase both come from middle/upper class backgrounds, and, whilst Cameron does have a criminal record, neither of them have any family issues past the "normal" ones.

Amber "Cutthroat Bitch" Volakis will always be my favourite House character. She was brilliant, conniving, ruthless, always a joy to watch. I love that she was only in for 2 seasons and went out with a big bang.

The perfect example of "When winning means you've already lost."
He did choose the simplest strategy by just telling Cuddy the challenge because nothing House does surprises her.
The real reason house fired him? House wants a team that will go to bat for each other, that are willing to break the rules together while simultaneously keeping each other in check so that they don't go too far or go rogue, to have that trust that is important for them to work together. It's why he grew so fond of Foreman, Chase, and Cameron, they all bonded with each other and in his own way he respected them all and could always count on them to work together to find the solution. What Cole did in brokering a deal with Cuddy was a betrayal of that trust, he was willing to throw anyone under the bus to succeed, even Amber didn't stoop that low and honestly I thought she was going to do that first thing, just skip all the hijinks and straight up ask Cuddy for the panties, instead she was willing to work within the team, that is what House wants.
But the way he is staring at "Big love" 4:37... I think the only moment House was truly amazed by someone...

@@Altanicorn Ok, first and foremost you should only wear a bra no more than twice before HAND washing your bras. Second, have multiple bras/panties in different styles and colors. Always get colors styles that will complement each other and think ahead when you purchase these garments. It's like buying a shirt. You think to yourself, "how many outfits can I make out of this one shirt?" If it's more than 2 then it's worth purchasing. It's the same with bras and panties.

The sprinkler produces water only. It has nothing to do with the fire detector. I don't know why "Big Love" didn't think about his cover story for a second, because it would've been so easy to explain why he chose Kutner.
House said he would fire one of the two chosen, so by choosing him and Amber, he'd be basically forcing House to pick her since he knew Kutner was in House's good books for standing up for the magician's case. It would've seemed like a perfect strong-arm tactic, and yet he didn't say anything. He's the real moron.

What if this was why kutner killed himself, becuase he thought everyone including cuddy, the head of the hospital, thought he was a failure. It's a long shot but who knows.
Maybe, but it wasn’t intended. The real reason Kutner killed himself was because he got a job to work for Obama so he had to quit the show. The writers were forced to quickly write him out of the show.
Unlikely, given how when Kutner was nominated House started giving all the reasons why Cole's choice was surprising, including the fact that Kutner had been delivering good results during the case. Even if he was hurt by the knowledge that Cuddy wanted him gone he should feel validated by House's defence.
Of course given that humans possess both rationality and emotions it's possible that he was more hurt by Cole's betrayal than House's praise boosted his confidence.

I get to nominate two candidates. So I pick the one everyone wants to Fire and I pick the one that I think is completely safe from being fired.
So I'm essentially picking the person that gets fired.

Houses “OH MY GAUD”s are the best. Also Foreman’s little “It’s how I got hired” is so funny and so real.
It's interesting to see how Cole is even more cutthroat than Amber. And the personal loyalty part of the test was why Cole failed. By this point, most of them had built somewhat of a report, and even House admits that Kutner and Cole were close. So being willing to undermine that, along with making deals with Cuddy, makes Cole unreliable and untrustworthy. Amber is willing to do anything to win, but she has a heart and is loyal. Which is something House needs. A cold, calculating, manipulative individual like House doesn't need another one like him around. He needs and wants to be challenged by his team, especially in matters of the heart. Cole can't offer that.
Going back to Season 1, Chase and House have some tension because he made a deal with Vogler. So he's already been through that and look where it led him.

I think Kutner's death was no surprise. He didn't take anything seriously, except the job. When Cuddy decided that Kutner is no good for the hospital, you can see the devastation in his eyes. It didn't that Big Love choose him. What really mattered was he understood that his job was at risk. Not because he was losing the competiton or anything, because the head of the hospital that he really wanted to work for, didn't want him. I think that's why he killed himself. Because he didn't get the respect that all the other doctors had. It's just my opinion though.
