Kiwi here. I can't be 100% sure because of the quality of the zoomed in footage, but I'm pretty sure that seagull was mad at you because the "other species" of bird you were filming is a seagull chick. When they are little they are land bound, grey and fuzzy, with long legs and a long neck, just like the bird (chick) in the footage. The gull probably saw you getting close to its nesting area and thought "this man bout to die". Happens with magpies and pukekos too. Don't get close to a pukeko in breeding season, they are territorial and hold grudges for ages.
That was cool Brock, thanks for the little trek. By the way, NZ does not have any poisonous shell fish that would harm you if you touched it. The one in your video is just a spiral shell nothing nefarious or innocuous. Sea snails are a bit of a delicacy here too which you find along most beaches. If you get the chance there are some more gun emplacements on Waiheke Island in Auckland. Hire a bike or car and go exploring down the other end of the Island, it's great.
Thanks Brock, I have always wondered what the attraction was about Somes Island, having seen it, for almost every working day of my life. Now i know, I am definitely going to visit this summer. Alas no fast foods for you on your tour. Cheers
My Great great grandfather who was born in Germany, and along with my great grandfather, who was born in New Zealand, were both sent to Somes Island along with a few hundred other Germans and Italians, even though they were naturalised British subjects by that point, out of fear they would work oh behalf of the Germans. It was a particularly sad part of New Zealand’s history, given my great great grandfather was an elderly man at that time, that has left an indelible stain on our history.
My wife and I, our 2 boys, My sister and her daughter, my mum and my father-in-law, all came and stayed on the island overnight via Dept of Conservation). My wife and I and my father-in-law got up in the night with torches and went for a walk. That's when you see the penguins, they sleep in their burrows during the day, prob because of the heat? And the bush and tracks were heaving with wetas, not the big ugly kind like in the motel, but delicate-looking ones that could jump about a metre, and had antenna that seems to be twice as long as their bodies. Cool as. The penguins looked at us all confused, like we were the ugliest penguins they'd ever seen.
That overnight visit was about 14 years ago. They turn the power off overnight, a lot of it was solar. We still talk about it, may do it again now that the boys are university aged.
If you get over to Dunedin and visit the Albatross colony, there's another gun emplacement there, contains an Armstrong disappearing canon from the Victorian era, beautiful condition. I remember visiting the gun emplacements up Whangaporoa, on the inside they had the view of the coast painted on the inside so you could plot where to fire.
That was a her seagull chick, she was protecting her baby. It was a leprosy colony once, the cone shells are every where and not dangerous, red tail spiders are about the worse thing we have here, our food here in NZ is yummie,I went to america and really missed our food ,your butter looks like our whipped cream, anyways enjoy our beautiful country, you should try whakatane it’s really pretty and the Ohope beach is beautiful

Yep, looked like baby seagull to me, too.
The actual reason why you were targeted is it heard your accent the gulls around here dont take to kindly to the americans 😂😂😂
Sea birds are very protective . Caspian turns and gulls will swoop on you , even peck as they fly by . I had a pet black back gull . Very cool tho .
The bird was mad because you got all of the sheep droppings for yourself
🤣

Somes Island is awesome. I did volunteer work there clearing vegetation off the tramway place you mentioned.
Really enjoyed your videos. Thanks. 😊 👍
