i know it's been 5 years, but appreciate the vid. i just bought a bike with a choke. manual says to have lever pulled all the way at start and let it run for a while. i got scared when it rev'd up like crazy, and thought my bike had something wrong with it, but saw it's normal if it's pulled all the way. i tried it like you said and it's running smooth now. thank you
The 2014 Ninja 250 still uses carbs! (So a choke).Good vid. I miss starting my Bandit in the morning and waking people up. A lot of people don't know, carbs are the reason behind us revving our engines. You rev'd to make sure the throttle was responding and that the bike didn't die.
This is super useful, I got my license in 2022 but just bought my first personal bike, went with a 2003 that wasn't too expensive so I wouldn't have to worry about being new on it, but it had a choke which I had never seen before! Now I do this every day
This bike actually has an 'enrichment' system and not a 'choke', but the results are the same- they both supply a fuel- rich mix to the engine whether it's 'hot' or 'cold'. No throttle should be required or used (blipping) during the initial start up process, and if throttle is needed it's almost always a sign that your carb needs servicing-very common with today's fuels if the machine has not been run on a regular basis/several times a month. Any throttle used while 'on choke' defeats the purpose of the choke or enrichment system. Avoid ethanol blended fuels if possible unless you run the machine daily and NEVER run E85 in these 'vintage' engines! Use a quality fuel stabilizer if the machine (mowers et al too!) sits for weeks at a time without being run to control phase separation of the 'fuel'. Once started, it's important to run the machine until it's fully up to operating temperature- 5-10 minutes minimum. The traditional choke has a plate or slide that closes off the intake(inlet) side of the carb to restrict airflow which routes increased vacuum to the carb's internals to add more fuel to the mix. The enrichment circuit differs in that it adds fuel to the mix with a plunger that reroutes vacuum and/or fuel to the carb inlet; there is no restricter plate. This is a simplified explanation and a good factory service manual (or goggle) shows the actual internal passages, etc. of the carb if you're interested. Regardless of which system your bike has it's very important to keep the rpms as low as possible during the initial warmup until the oil has circulated through the top end. Manipulate the 'choke' to maintain rpms only to where the engine continues to run without using the throttle, and go 'off choke' asap, when the machine idles as it should without any choke, or throttle blips. On the hottest days of the year, my KLR 250 (which has a nearly identical carb as the little Ninja in this vid) occasionally needs to be briefly 'choked' after it sits for short periods during the days I ride it due to the rapid evaporation of fuel in the carb from the high heat radiating from the engine, but typically no enrichment is needed but for the initial start up for the day. Above all, RTFM!
I had a Ninja 250 in the early 90's, and this is exactly how I used the choke. After it started I would adjust the choke so that the tac would idle at 1K RPM's. After 2 minutes I was ready to go. After 30 years, I purchased a 20 year old carbureted motorcycle, and it starts much different. That's why I seeked out this video, I wanted to see if the procedure was different from bike to bike. I either choke a little or not at all, and when the bike starts, I bring the choke down, or it will die. I don't know if it's because it has four carburetor's and they all have different needs etc. I do like my fuel injected bike much better, but the cool thing about these carbureted bikes, is that you can push (bump for you people out east) start them.
Wow bro thanks I was wondering why my bike was running so loud I didn’t know what that handle was for . Thanks I did exactly what u said once the bike was warm push the handle All the way up she stay running quite nice
Thank you sooo freaking much! Just got an 1980 CB750 CUSTOM and couldn't keep it running so I played with the choke until it ran! Now I see what I was doing wrong! Kudos bruh 👍👍
Hey man, thanks for the video. My old suzuki fh125m gets cold easily and this video really helped a lot. I can finally warm my bike up properly without it shutting off multiple times due to a cold engine ! :D
Thanks man, now I understand how that choking thing works. Im quite new in the bike world and didnt understand why my bike sounded like it was possessed, speeding up all by itself.
Such a simple thing, and so hard to find a good explanation, even in person people are shit at explaining/don’t know what they’re talking about. Thank you so much, super new rider, 1983 Honda Nighthawk 550 :3 Michigan spring is almost here!!!!!
Did you get excited about the helicopter lol and thanks for the very helpful info about how to use a choke, I'm not a rider but I'm looking forward/ want to become one
+Daniel Lozano yah, i was so stoked watching videos last year about being a new motorcycle rider, watched all the MSF course videos and such! Now I have a new bike and its so powerful, its great!
You can take a plastic bag, cut a hole in the corner and wire tie it around the top of a cable housing to pour lube in there and it might drip down with time it seemed to work with mine on a thirty nine year old bike.
Man damn bro I never really had a bike I just brought a 1993 Suzuki 750 katana with only 14,000 miles on her first bike but now I feel like shit after hearing u say that u don’t miss that shit at all🤯😡😔😩😢💯😁Are they really that bad frfr bro ?
I just bought a Yamaha V Twin Star 250. When you say all the "way up there" does that location show an icon of a choke closed ? I find if I move the choke to the left it runs way to fast. If I have it to the maximum right it has the real nice idle. However in that position the markings show a closed choke. Now on a riding lawn tractor one cannot run a warm engine on a closed choke? So is that different for a motorcycle engine?
So someone make sure I got this right. When it’s cold, I turn the choke on, start the bike, wait for it to warm up, turn choke off, then go?? Is that right?
My father used to rev the engine while choking, to make the process faster. Is this a taboo? Or is is somewhat bad for the motorcycle? I have a 1987 Honda SuperMagna.
nice guide man! I have a question though. When you first bought your bike, did you ride it away from the person you bought it from? Or did a friend do that for you? Or did you tow it away?
TheftyGamer actually I bought it from a dealership over in Cocoa by the beach. Part of their sales is that they do free deliveries on all bike sales so yah they delivered it the very next morning for me. They understand it can be a pain trying to get it home if you just drove up in a car so give you the free delivery!
NicheRiding I am hesitant to buy from a dealership even if it is used. I am 20 years old and I am worried that they slap on fees that I wouldn't need to deal with if I bought from someone trusted on craigslist
TheftyGamer Oh I found it on cycle trader. Then I went and looked at it, then we walked in and talked numbers. I said cash today, he goes hmm cash? I said yup and pulled out my debit card and I said yes sir! He walked back in 5 mins and the deal was done! So I knocked about 500 off of what he was asking which was already low because they couldn't move it off of their lot. The guy came down 300 just for me walking In the door, then another 500 when I offered cash!
So every bike with a choke needs warming up from a cold start? I had a very hard time today with my Kickstart-only bike not starting, even with choke all the way back
Alex Jhon not till Christmas, you see that 370z in the background, well its 421 bucks a month payment. It will be paid off around Christmas. I am going crazy paying far more though to get it paid off. At that much per month I could have bought an H2 if I was skilled enough to handle one:)
My Ninja choke just kind of springs back, won't stay at full choke without holding it down . Although it will kind of stay at half choke. Is this to do with the Carb, or just the lever need tightening?
Ive got a small choke lever on the clutch lever so i needed to know that, just bought a £3000 96cm 21/19 250cc & its a monster, i wish id got the 160cc or even 140cc, its an off road dirt bike with no off road were i am, not a road legal bike.

Thanks for this tutorial. My mom bought a 2002 Sportster 1200 with choke and couldn't find any tutorials. Much appreciated. Really helped a lot

yah, it's easy!
I’ve just got my first bike, a 2007 Honda cbr125r and I had no clue how to use the choke properly! Thanks for the explanation!
Glad to help:)
Thank you so much!! I was so confused I thought I had to have it all the way until it got warmed up at least that's what I was told
glad to help, old school ways of starting the bike but it still works.
Thank you for the video. I am getting a bike and it has a choke and i just wanted to know how these Chokes work.
Thank you!!! The motorcycle handbook I got didn't really explain the choke that well, so appreciate it! You got a new sub!
Did anyone else notice the lizard to the left of the bike at 3:50? 😂
It’s somewhat cold here in central CA, so primarily my choke lever is always up. I’ll be playing with this next time I have trouble. Thank you!
