2 comments: 1) on the person saying something about smithing materials, I'd fully disagree. I wouldn't complain, but they could have added more. I tried several of the new weapons for fun and ended up having to buy a lot. 2) I really don't understand the difficulty complaints. I'm seasoned and maybe above average but not amazing, and for me, I think the bosses for the most part are about the same level as Malenia, Malekith, Placidusax, etc. People complained a lot about their difficulty a couple years ago. I've been playing through on a fresh run to do the DLC and didn't feel any major uptick in difficulty from the late game to the DLC. I don't get it.

And yes, the DLC has really pushed me to be more creative with builds, even just for fun with the new weapon offerings. I even did come up with a tanking approach for Midra which I haven't done on any other boss in the game after the first few hours.

Ive had to buy a bunch of materials to upfrade the new weapons and it takes maybe 2 minutes to get the runes required? I dont understand the complaint. Plus you find plenty of misc mats as you kill stuff...

My only real complaint with the bosses is that I wish their aggression was toned down just a bit. I think they're completely fine in terms of movesets (for the most part) but just not being able to have a single second to breathe and collect yourself in a fight is starting to make the DLC more stressful than fun to me at some points. Due to the really tight punish windows its also extremely hard to keep enough pressure on a boss to get a stance break, significantly harder than any boss from the base game at least. Dont get me wrong, I've been having a blast playing it, but some of the fights are just demoralizing. If a fight starts to go poorly it feels borderline impossible to salvage it. In terms of world design and exploration, i think it's one of the most fun games I've ever played

@@SHMECCC I said I wouldn't complain. I've bought a bunch. It's just that if smithing materials are dropping and findable, they could do even more.

I did not get the DLC because it does not look intriguing. I think I have outgrown From's design style and really hoped they'd evolve more fully realized gameplay worlds and characters with a better combat system. All for difficulty but the studio now focuses on difficult big combat encounters - not necessarily depth of a combat system.

I disagree with this idea as the bosses in ER and SoTE are that evolution in combat. It might not look like it at first, but when you actually dig deep into the design of ER's bosses you start seeing the great design.
ER's bosses are easily some of their best (there are 100% some stinkers,a lot of the good ones still have noticeable flaws, and I'm not gonna argue too heavily with someone who would argue DS3 has better).
      Warning, essay inbound:
First I'd argue that ER is an actual evolution on Demon's Souls' boss design. A kind of return to form. That might sound insane, but hear me out. DeS was built on gimmicks, but very little mechanical depth for the most part. Elden Ring is built on gimmicks AND mechanical depth. Some bosses lean more on gimmicks than others and vice versa, but bosses like Starscourge Radahn and Rykard are absolutely peak gimmick fights, with Rykard being the best storm weapon fight they've done, and I'd argue Radahn is the best gimmick fight in the game. Even the more traditional fights hold cool gimmicks, like Maliketh's life blocking or the Dancing Lion's elemental stances.
The next thing I'd praise Elden Ring's boss design for is how it differentiates boss attacks through combos and the pacing. A criticism I generally held for DS3 was that a lot of bosses would be dodged the exact same way, their moves would look different, but to dodge was just dodging away in literally any direction, or spamming roll. It's overall a minor criticism, but it still is one. Elden Ring's combos are absolutely amazing, bosses have different places for combos changing their feel while also differentiating them as characters. Godrick staggers around with his swings, showing his fragility while also encouraging you to pay attention to when the attack will actually come, and Mohg's attacks are wide, sweeping, and slow, emphasising how he's more of a spell caster than a melee fighter while also giving the fight a unique pace and building on the fight's focus on area denial/positioning.
Lastly I'd say Elden Ring does a great job of actually making bosses feel like they want you dead. In the older games, bosses would kinda just keep going even though by all means a real warrior/monster would stop and reposition, or they'd let you chug a flask when by all means they could hit you. Elden Ring makes its bosses much better at tracking and catching, making bosses both more difficult, but in a way that makes sense. A lot of people complain about input reading, and I get that maybe having them input read frame one is kinda nuts, but to say it's a bad feature is just wrong. It makes bosses make more sense as they aren't just gonna give you a free heal, that doesn't make sense. You have to think when you heal, it's a compelling choice as usual you're gonna sacrifice damage for sustainability.
Overall this culminates in peak bosses like Morgott, Mohg, Maliketh, Godfrey, Radagon (no Elden Beast), Dancing Lion, Rellana, Bayle, and Messmer.
TO BE FAIR, the game still recycles world bosses too much (or at least doesn't put in the work to differentiate bosses of the same type), bosses like Malenia and Consort Radahn have BS moves (I don't think Waterfowl is as bad as people say it is, but it is overturned, and C.Radahn's cross slash is 100% BS), and there are some really bad bosses like Fire Giant and the Godskin Duo.
TL;DR Elden Ring bosses are peak for 3 reasons, but some are not peak.
P.S. sorry for such a needlessly long and nerdy comment LMAO
