to my mind, these are the best types of interviews on the SWU channel. i watch many of them, although some i cannot watch to the end, but these types of interviews are coherent and compassionate, thoughtful and thought-provoking.
Mark. Every interview you do is awesome and interesting. Thank you so much for what you do.
Talk about niche. This is right up my alley. I’m definitely going to look more into this guest. Thanks Mark.
I just purchased his book on Amazon 🔥
It’s fascinating book
💯💯. Same. Just got the audiobook.
What an amazing story teller !! I was captivated start to finish . Thank you for this interview and the other people you film . Great 👍
Hahaha I said the exact same thing lmao😂 but so true funny we used the exact words but it was great
Agree! Superb story telling!!!
As a writer myself, and often more critical of other writers than I should be, I'm tremendously impressed by Mr. Katz's engaging, humane delivery. In the greatest tradition of storytellers, the tale takes primacy and he tells it with the disarming ease of a true raconteur.
Mark - My girlfriend is a photographer. We love your videos. We are coming out to LA to see your exhibition at the Fahey/Klein Gallery. Can't wait!
Great interview…love these types of conversations. Jesse is a fantastic & compassionate storyteller.
“I really appreciate your perspective! I found Jesse’s account of his transformative experiences especially moving-he really connected his personal struggles with a universal message of hope and resilience. It made me reflect on my own journey, too. What was the most powerful moment for you in the interview?”
I was teaching some of the kids from the Bloods art classes in the Hood. A few kids discovered their talents and didn't want to continue the destructive lifestyle of their parents.
❤❤❤
Good on you. The local youth program in Echo Park. Young gang bangers sentenced to community service. They show up the first day, all attitude. Danny, a volunteer (school custodian) would send them home, "Your hours don't count until you show up not wearing gang clothes." (The liberal white ladies at our meetings get all excited. "You can't tell people how to dress!" The right wingers are silent; they want camps in the desert and executions.) The kids show up the next day, not wearing gang clothes. Then they ask the other kids, "How long you in for?"
Huh?
How many hours you get assigned?
Ah, I'm a volunteer.
(Incredulous) You do this for fun?
Yeah.
Then they start cleaning up the streets, paint out graffiti.... and then back to the fire station for pizza, help with homework, electronic games....
And it is fun. Most stick around.
The head of the program at a community meeting mentioned that some of their kids were arrested with guns, six weeks later they were working in people's homes... Ah, wait... I had some of these kids working in my home...
Oh, yeah that was **. He's been a councilor with the program for 30 years now.
Offer after school programs or gangs will recruit. I wanted to teach the kids in our community because their potential was clear.
Pffffffft. Rico statutes.
Nothing you can do if you have to segregate “the bloods” to their own art class. That school is cooked..
What a surprise to see Mr. Katz on my feed! He is a childhood friend of mines dad. Growing up he was also our coach for our little league basketball team back in the 2000s. He was always super cool and nice to me growing up. I will always remember him being very supportive of our hobbies and interests when me and my friends were young. Glad to learn more about him now that I’m an adult and to see that he is doing well. I’ll be picking a copy of your book Mr. Katz!
I thoroughly enjoyed this interview, and just purchased Jesse’s book on Audible! I can’t wait to listen! I am really impressed by Jesse’s way of speaking about people, as well as his empathy and understanding about other cultures & their struggles. He seems like a wonderful human being! Thank you for sharing Jesse 💜
Amazing interview as always. How you just let people talk without interruption or prompts is incredible. Keep up the good work!!
Wow. Mr. Katz you are a great storyteller and a refreshingly humane individual who is so needed at this time. Thank you. I really want to read your book.
I'm a retired SoCal cop. I graduated the LA Sheriffs Academy in the late 80s. The average person can't wrap their mind around how violent the gang culture of Los Angeles County is. If you can imagine it, no matter how vile, someone in Los Angeles is doing it.
BTW, I had my own run in with Giovanni's gang.
Class Number? I was hired in 1989
@AWKING41 251. Retired in Texas with a neighbor from 254.
Thanks to the American government the violence was terrible throughout the black and Spanish communities in that era

It's insane why anyone allowed this crap to happen. "Gangs" are by definition organized crime and conspiracy. Rico predicates ,life sentences.

I love this interview! Excellent story telling! I’m buying his book! Thank you both!!!
This sounds like Miami in the late 80's. This is a fantastic interview. Gangs thrive on what they consider "throw away kids". Kids like Giovanni pay the highest price all around. It is amazing that he testified against the gang members. I had a client that had served 5 of 7 years because he refused to flip. He was caught with a small amount of drugs. His attorney tried so hard to get him to give up his "employer". He had wealthy parents that did not understand what world their college student son had become involved with. He turned out to be a success story despite a very poor decision.
Soft White Underbelly is raw human condition. I am very fascinated by most of the stories. I think Mark is a genius. Well done
❤
Mark, thank you the depth of humanity touches everyone heart❤. We are all one. Warmest wishes to families that were injured and death of loved ones. And heartfelt vibes to the community of Macarthur Park.
“Thank you so much for your touching message-it truly warms my heart. Your words remind us that we are all one and that our shared humanity can bring comfort during even the hardest times. I’m sending warm wishes and heartfelt vibes to all the families affected in Macarthur Park. How do you think communities can best support one another in moments like these?”

Nothing has changed at McArthur park and in the area. I work off 3rd and Alvarado and just a week ago multiple people were shot. A few months ago two people were being chased into our building with weapons. Props to you for courageously living across from the park.
Shout out to Tommy Burger
I found this interview very interesting and captivating. I grew up in San Antonio, TX amid the heyday of gangs in the late 80s and 90s. Gang members were in my classes at school, they were my neighbors, and they were people that surrounded me in every aspect of my life. I could understand the allure of it all, but never became involved or let them into my life or world. They were always the backdrop, shadows, NPCs to me. I did my own thing and was never harassed or bothered
Need more interviews like these. ❤
This guy is blaming the City, for the murder because the kid could not sell tacos, Let that
sink in. This is what is wrong with press. He shot a baby. He is a bad person, and he did it coldly. No anger, its called a sociopath. He shot a baby dead.
Lol it's insane isnt it.
Blaming the city for not mandating street vendor permits is some expert level mental gymnastics that sheep will blindly agree with and rally behind.
What about tamales? Would he still have become a gangbanger if he’d sold tamales? Giovanni’s family environment was stacked against him. Would’ve been a miracle if he’d made it out of the hood.
I mostly agree with you. There’s no excuse. However, he definitely had no intention of killing a baby. But he was carrying out a hit that was ordered on someone that the gang told him to hit, so he’s very much guilty of being in that life.
This is why I have advocated tax payer funded firearms training for disadvantaged youth who get clowned in the hood
Thanks Mark🎉🎉🎉You entertain me every morning.Love this story.❤❤
“They charge rent”….more like they extort their own people under threat of violence and try to control everyone through violence😂.
And then people complain about “the poor, down trodden”.
Anyone who allows drugs & violence in their neighborhood & doesn’t constantly combat/address it will just get more of the same.
I think you're misinterpreting alot of this video. They're not saying it's right to charge "rent", they're explaining the situation and how the gangs operate.
@ I enjoyed the video & get that it’s a story of redemption & having empathy, amongst other things.
My comment is not for the subject of the guy’s book…it was directed to people in general…these street gangsters are bullies & if you live in a shit neighborhood, and are a man…you need to do your part. Los Angeles, as a city is culpable also for allowing so many illegals & for not protecting them. But primarily it’s the people in these neighborhoods not doing their part. Call the cops immediately when you see drug use, violence etc. It works, I know this first hand. And I know that most immigrants don’t want to get involved, their lives are too comfortable here in America. And the extortion, shootings, etc is bad behavior brought over from their countries.
In short my comment was half scold, have to give hope…do your part, the cops will back you up & don’t let your community fall when you’ve got the resources of the California govt to come arrest the people causing the problem.
You are correct. This guy is attempting to normalize and embrace gang violence in his city. Only in California… this is NOT an American thing how this guy interprets this
@ thanks for your comment. I enjoyed his story, but apart from that…it’s a very American thing to want to clean up your neighborhood…and if you do it on your block, soon more will follow.
In other countries you can’t depend on the police to have your back, many times they even work with the criminals.
But in America we have the luxury of being able to call the real “good guys”…and if you do, they’ll get tired of being harassed on your block & will avoid it.
It works, it really does:)
And that’s what wanted to convey.
There is a reason he used quotation marks around "rent".
Great interview Mark , can tell Katz is genuinely speaking on this situation & really feels bad for that kid
This guys a great storyteller I could listen all day
“I totally agree-his storytelling is absolutely captivating! There’s just something about the way he weaves his words that makes you feel like you’re right there in the moment. What’s one of your favorite stories or moments he’s shared? I’d love to hear what really resonates with you.”
@ I loved it all but hearing it from all perspectives I hope is mind opening and heart opening to people. I love how he is not forgetting the victims while helping the offender and how he’s has such a positive impact on a kid who was truly lost to the streets. People are very judgement these days and so black and white . I’m a very “why” person in every aspect so the digging into Giovanni and his reason for committing the offense is something I feel more should do. Just because someone commits a horrific crime doesn’t mean.m They’re a lost soul
@@amyk2559 “Thank you for sharing such thoughtful insights-it really resonates with me. I completely agree that exploring the ‘why’ behind actions can open our hearts and minds, showing that even those who commit horrific acts might be lost souls in need of help. It’s so inspiring to see someone who balances honoring the victims while also seeking to understand the offender’s journey. Have you come across any other stories or perspectives that highlight this kind of compassionate investigation into the ‘why’?”

Very insightful conversation
Poor Giovanni. If it weren't for LA street vendor licenses he would not have been forced to murder. Thankfully he has a retired reporter to visit him in prison.
Imagine drawing only the worst possible lesson from this story lol.
Must be nice to be in a stable home and not know what it's like to live on the mean streets. So easy to judge in your cozy lazy boy chair
@@BDnevernind People that have sympathy for violent criminals actively contribute to more violence perpetrated by criminals. Shut up.
@@BDnevernind But that's exactly the point Jesse Katz makes, LA doesn't license street vendors so that allows the street vendors illegally working on the streets to be hustled by gangs and the mother who had just given birth was most likely illegally present in the US so had no recourse to public aid, food stamps etc...
What a cynical comment if that’s all you got from this again and to the very end!
Hows the mother of that baby feel?
Does she feel he's such a reformed hero?

This was such an incredible interview!!!
These are great! Thank you.
Wait did he just claim a gangbaner who killed an infant was a victim?? I’m sure the kid was in a difficult situation, but indiscriminately firing a gun into a crowd of people can never be tolerated…
unfortunately crime is nuanced and layered. perpetrators are often victims of orher crimes themselves. children as young as 6/7 are violently manipulated and threatened into gangs with no choice really.
Do not Allow Californians to move to your state. This is their mindset

Welcome to America atleast we advise where not to go 😂 blame the liberals because they have been in power there forever and they experimented by writing policies that was obviously going to fail and turned it into the wastland it has become today.
This man is a captivating and brilliant story teller. I could listen to him for hours.
I visited LA in 2022. I drove through South Central and Compton. I couldn’t believe how nice these areas were. Nice single family homes with lawns and yards and wide streets. A lot of green. A lot of late model cars.
Nice big parks. Wide avenues with stores and restaurants etc. I saw no real poverty or run down looking buildings etc. I totally understand that these are rough areas. With gang violence etc. I’m not saying they’re not. They just don’t LOOK like dangerous areas that you typically see in NY and Philly and Chicago etc.
Downtown LA / Skid Row areas are disgraceful. Disgusting. Homeless everywhere. Garbage.
No disrespect but I found LA to be a huge disappointment honestly. Kind of a soulless place. Lots of strip malls and fast food places. No real character. A completely Latino and Asian city.

MacArthur Park is west of downtown; Skid Row is on the east side of downtown. Not close to each other, certainly not adjacent to each other.
MacArthur Park and Skid Row are both off of 6th Street and are about 2 miles apart. They are relatively close but totally different neighborhoods for sure. (I lived in the area)
This was a very interesting and fantastic interview. Thank-you Tio Gato
Is it really ridiculous to think there should be rules and laws to regulate street vendors selling tamales that they make at home? Standards for hygienic practices and safe food handling cannot be compromised and serve a tremendous purpose here in the US. Having street vendors everywhere is something that I see when traveling to Third World countries. It is not necessarily something that is adding to the quality of life here in the US.
Exactly, this fool is an illegal alien APOLOGIST
White people have more regulations than mao China. But mexicans should be able to sell shit smeared tamales from their trunk
Great interview and awesome perspective and experience. More of these types of interviews welcome to compliment other experiences of people. Provides context.
I currently enjoy the ability to share family visits with my husband at San Quinten Prison. The first one was quite a different experience. Not only for me but for my husband that had spent the previous 11 years in segregation while fighting his case. So seeing him in that environment was such an amazing thing to experience. He could walk in and out of the door as he wished even during the night. To see him open the refrigerator and close it several times in a row because he hadn’t done so in about 17 years. He had not been able to be in complete darkness, without being watched by another human or to enjoy the smallest things we take for granted was truly a beautiful site for me.

You're really charging people to watch Ray Whittaker eat a burger? Smh. Exploitation at it's finest. Poor guy doesn't even realize because you're flashing money in the family's face.
“I can understand your concern-it really does feel exploitative when it seems like someone’s personal actions are being used just for profit. It raises a lot of questions about respect and fairness. I’m curious, what do you think would be a more respectful way to share content like this, one that honors everyone involved?”
@ Well, there's no denying that Mark has helped The Whittakers tremendously, which I've always respected and love watching them enjoy things in life that they haven't been able to experience. That said, they do seem to be also taking advantage of Mark's heart at times. Sooo, I suppose they both "use" each other in a sense. This Ray eating a hamburger just seemed a bit over the top for me personally..Mark has a new movie premiering on his pay channel and this seems To be solely to get traffic there.🤷♀️ Ray isn't the most gracious eater and it just seemed icky to me.
I also find it funny that Mark has the comment section shut off in that video, why? He obviously felt there would be comments such as mine, imo.🤷♀️
@ “I really appreciate your thoughtful take on this. It’s clear that while Mark’s generosity has opened up some amazing experiences for The Whittakers, there’s a fine line between mutual benefit and taking advantage of someone’s kindness. Ray’s hamburger moment does seem a bit over the top if it’s just meant to drive traffic for the new movie. What do you think would be a better way to balance genuine enjoyment with the need to promote his work? I’d love to hear more of your perspective!”
@@Richwealth1x There's other ways to promote his work (movie), if he really even has to do more than he already has. I mean come on, he has a huge channel!! His work is amazing, no doubt. (I didn't however appreciate the underage street girl & mother videos, but that's a whole other story😉) How about using Rebecca to promote it, who understands what she is into with Mark, far more than Ray does. Ray is an innocent in my eyes, he doesn't have the.. intellect let's say and I feel it was very much exploiting him. If I personally was Mark, I would take my friendship with the Whittakers and treasure it for my own. I wouldn't share them with the world but rather protect them from it. Selfish? Maybe... but I wouldn't want them subjected to hurt... That's my thoughts. Thank you for your kind, inquisitive responses!!

What a beautiful soul mr Katz has he should be somebody that prisons and prisoners get reformed by,lots of love from France 🇫🇷 ❤
“Absolutely, I completely agree-Mr. Katz really does have a beautiful soul. His compassion and wisdom could be a powerful influence in helping reform prisons and supporting prisoners on their journey to change. It’s inspiring to think of the positive impact his example could have. I’m curious, what kind of programs or changes do you think would best capture his spirit to help transform the system? Sending lots of love back to you in France!”
Hey Jesse...I worked at CAL and CEN in Education. I became very involved, really, as a mentor and confidant to the inmate population. I was more like a minister than anything else. I worked at these two prisons for 25 years, and if I heard it once, I heard it at least a hundred times: "My brothers both joined the Army and my sister works at Google. I'm the screwup. I never listened to my parents." IMHO, what young men really need--and I mean REALLY NEED--is role models that sometimes actually force compliance--or discipline upon them--such that self-discipline becomes learned. I see this falling apart in many areas of the American culture--and it is not good. Thanks. Have a nice day.
Unpopular opinion: Personally, whilst these videos are very interesting and informative, I do feel that there is something wrong about taking the most vulnerable members of society and profiting from them for, basically, entertainment. Just because you can do it, and people will watch, doesn't mean you should. You are asking these people about the most difficult parts of their lives. You are asking them to discuss trauma. Coming from someone in a mental health background, it can be actually re-traumatising to get people to speak about their trauma, if they have PTSD etc., without providing mental health support for them. A lot of them are on drugs or vulnerable in other ways so that they can't make an informed decision about whether they want to have an interview with you. They then share very personal information that may actually put them at further risk and it's on the internet forever.
Poignant, thank you both
