Played on the machine's default settings.
The first time I saw a Superman machine as a kid, it really left an impression on me. The game began with Clark Kent turning into Superman, the graphics were awesome, the theme song blasted at you over and over again, you could blow up helicopters with your eye lasers, and there was even a car to throw! It was the sort of game that got me excited to go to the arcade. You weren't going to find anything like this at home. Not in 1988.
According to the game's promotional flyer, "at last, our super hero, Superman, comes to the stage of the video game world! He will fight against aliens in order to frustrate the ambitions of the emperor 'Zaas' who schemes the conquest of the earth!
Using strong punches and kicks and exciting sonic blasts and heat visions, this fast-paced game is full of the characteristic energy that only Superman can possess."
Not the hypest description ever, but you have to give Taito credit: it's in English, and it makes sense. That was quite an achievement for them. Remember the ridiculous text in Ring Rage ( • Ring Rage (Arcade) Pla... ), or how they once released a game named "Violence Fight"? It's worth mentioning that this was not the first Superman game, regardless of what the flyer claimed. The man of steel had already been to "the stage of the video game world" several times, including on the NES ( • Superman (NES) Playthr... ), though the arcade game was easily the best Superman game yet.
Playing it again as an adult, I still can't help but to be impressed by the presentation. The huge character sprites and colorful backdrops look fantastic for a game of its age, and there's no sign of flicker or slowdow when the screen is packed full of enemies and bullets. The music features an incredible FM rendition of the Superman theme (that synth brass!), and the digitized effects are punchy and crystal clear. The orchestra hit when you get a 1-up or a screen bomb never fails to bring a smile to my face.
The gameplay isn't up to the same level of quality as the graphics and sound, unfortunately. The brawler and the shmup sections both suffer from being too simple and repetitive, and once you hit stage four, the difficulty hits a sudden, massive spike - enemies begin to spawn right on top of you, and several can repeatedly stun lock you and chew through several lives in a row - and these things effectively ruin the rest of the game. Whenever I play, I usually turn it off as soon as I beat stage three. It's just not fun anymore beyond that point.
Superman hasn't had a lot of luck headlining video games over the years, but this is one of his better ones. It's pretty fun for the first fifteen minutes, at least.
For a bit of extra fun, keep an eye out for some of the weird text that shows up in the backgrounds, like the baptist church that advertises "couch service" or the casino named "Tremor Ferret."

Superman usually gets a solid soundtrack. He's a nice guy.
Thought that second player in the demo was Captain Marvel for a sec. The yellow enemies look like they're in chicken suits.
Taito games from back then were all great looking and sounding. This game was a classic in the arcade, coin ops doesn't get much better than this.
Not long after, Atari would have "Batman the Movie" video game. One thing I would have loved is a "World's Finest" game where Superman and Batman deal with the Double Devils of Lex Luthor and the Joker. The "Man of Steel" with the "Dark Knight Detective."

It was originally composed for the 1978 film adaptation starring the late Christopher Reeve, and was later arranged for the second and third films by the late Ken Thorne and arranged for the fourth film by the late Alexander Courage.

In my humble opinion, Taito's 1988 adaptation of Superman is quite possibly the best Superman game in existence. I've played this in some arcades in my youth, but I haven't truely been able to experience the game until the age of emulation.
The only _good_ Superman game. For 1988, the graphics look great and the FM soundtrack is awesome ‐ even John Williams' Superman theme sounds great. But the gameplay is very repetitive and there's a massive jump in difficulty starting in Round 3 (8:30).
This was one of my favorite Arcade games back in the late 1980s and I managed to beat it on one quarter. This is how a Superman game is supposed to be. Loved that Superman theme.
I never played this game but I have faint memories of watching the older boys play it. This game looks pretty difficult. Time flies.
I still say that to this day, this is the best Superman game ever made.

It was. There was one at the batting cages I used to go to. My mom would give me four quarters after I took swings.
I always liked this game, loved the gameplay, the music and sound effects; they have always been in my mind. Never made it too far though, found it too difficult but still it has a special place in my heart.

Yeah, the final level is hard, but then again, arcade games tend to do that on purpose as a way to keep players putting in quarters, therefore, making the arcade that owns the machine more money.

I wish he would do arcade games. It would be a gold mine for him. I think the reason he doesn't do them is that he doesn't use emulators. Unfortunately, this game was absent from Taito Legends because Taito's license for the DC characters had expired by that point.

Still love this arcade game. But I think they should have just put the REAL Captain Marvel in it as a 2nd player. Either way, fantastic fun arcade game!!!

I’m not really a DC guy, who are the random bad guys in this game? Are they just generic or are these actual characters/villains?
They're all generic. Even the main bad guy was created from scratch for this game. As a kid I used to pretend the boss vehicles were piloted by Lex Luthor (it does look like a bald dude in the cockpit) and the robot with the rocket fist was Metallo.
"Couch Service" and "Tremor Ferret". Taito never disappointed in the Engrish category. Moving along, I remember seeing this game as a kid at an arcade spot down in Mexico. Popped in one quarter, but got immediately pummeled in Stage 1, so that was that. 😆

I wonder how fantastic this game would sound on a real arcade cabinet.
They had this cabinet at a convenience store that my mom worked at when I was a kid in the late eighties, and I would play this all the time back in the day. It sounded amazing on a real arcade cabinet! I've seen several people in the comments saying that this is the best Superman game ever made, and based on the ones I've played and the ones I've seen, I would agree with that. Certainly not the best graphics by today's standards, but they hold up amazingly well for a game released 35 years ago, and the soundtrack is very engaging in cinematic, and really lends a nice vibe to the playing experience.
The ONLY great Superman game we will ever get...
