    • @limiv5272
      @limiv5272 4 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      The human immune system isn't generally better or worse, it's just different than that of a cat or dog so it's better at some thing and worse at others. House pets don't often congregate with other members of their species the way humans do on a daily basis, which I presume would decrease their rates of infection.

    • @garethdean6382
      @garethdean6382 4 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      In general human immune systems are very good at dealing with invaders. The issue is that certain microbes are adapted specifically to attacking humans or have tumbled across a good general strategy. If you stand on a rusty nail more than a thousand types of bacteria, vriri, fungi and other creatures will invade your body, nearly all we be gone in hours. Only those who have our immune systems figured out in some way (Looking at YOU tetanus.) have a chance. (And even then often only once before we get immunity.)
      I'd recommend looking at Kurzgesagt's video on ebola which shows the many steps the virus takes specifically to shut down mammalian immune systems.There the human immune system falls to elaborate sabotage rather than incompetence.

    I work in a natural food store with the pet stuff. It is extremely difficult for me when someone wants a 'natural' treatment for heartworm. I try to explain to them the dangers of not treating ahead of an infection and poor efficacy of so-called 'natural treatments' for live infections. I usually end with suggesting they talk to their vet and if they don't have one I suggest my vet. My hope being that if they know a natural food store worker goes there they'll consider going there too and get real treatment for their pet.
    I do this with vaccines, flea and tick treatments and bobcat fever too. I've gone out of my way to have information, not fear, to give them.

    Wolbachia male-embryo-killer caused over 90% of Acraea encedon butterflies to be female. This caused them to evolve lekkiing behavior to attract males. This is very different from close relatives of Acraea encedon, where the males lek to attract females. Even then, many females in these populations are virgins.

    Another heartworm fact people should be aware is that the heartworm will only develope in the mosquitoes when the surrounding environment is at a certain temperature for a certain length of time. Which is why you tend to not see heartworm infections in colder areas of the world. But due to a rise in global temperatures heartworms are starting to become more prevalent in areas where they previously were not. So even if you live in an area that has a history of low heartworm cases, I would look into how the statistics are changing in regards to that. Also cats can get heartworm too. Unfortunately though while they do have a different response then humans and dogs it is still an unsuccessful response. Basically their immune system solves the issue of the invader in the house by burning the whole house down.

    My concern is that people have recently been trying to inoculate more mosquitos with Wolbachia to stamp out malaria because its presence inhibits the parasites. Does this mean greater chances of heartworm infections due to more widespread Wolbachia-infected mosquitos, providing filarial worms with more chances to have bacterial assistance to infection?

    You guys didn't say it scary enough. Risk of death never gets a pet owner to buy preventive meds.
    Look, it costs about $50-$80 a year to purchase preventive heartworm meds for your dog. Heartworm treatment, if your dog ever tests positive for heartworm, ranges from $2000-$8000 dollars and takes about 6-8 months to treat. The dog may even pass away from an autoimmune disorder brought about by the meds needed to treat the heartworm. At which point you would've spent about $2000-$4000 already. Prevention is the best way to ensure you're dogs never gets heartworm.

    you are unlikely to get worms in your heart from your doggo... but worms still can permanently settle in ANY of your organs. Eyeballs, for instance.

    Please have your dogs on heart worm prevention! I worked at a vet and saw poor dogs suffering from such a preventable thing.... 😢 It’s more important than vaccines, yet some people will pay for those but not heart worm prevention.

    So the heart worms did not infect the heart but the lungs? My dog was put down in 2014 with lung cancer now I am thinking maybe it was heartworm because all the vet found out is the fluid accumulation in the lungs that caused the dog difficulty to breath.

    • @airsoftboy32
      @airsoftboy32 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, they set up shop in the heart, hence their name. The lung part is talked about because that's where it's mostly found in humans when the "coin lesions" are found. Most heart worm infections are treatable with modern medications but the best thing to do is keep your animals on prevention year round and do routine testing because medications do not work 100% of the time!
