    I work in a natural food store with the pet stuff. It is extremely difficult for me when someone wants a 'natural' treatment for heartworm. I try to explain to them the dangers of not treating ahead of an infection and poor efficacy of so-called 'natural treatments' for live infections. I usually end with suggesting they talk to their vet and if they don't have one I suggest my vet. My hope being that if they know a natural food store worker goes there they'll consider going there too and get real treatment for their pet.
    I do this with vaccines, flea and tick treatments and bobcat fever too. I've gone out of my way to have information, not fear, to give them.

    So, this raises the question of why people’s immune systems are so good at dealing with worms? I could be wrong, but it seems to me that humans are LESS good at handling bacterial and viral infections in comparison.

    • @DrD0000M

    • @limiv5272
      @limiv5272 5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      The human immune system isn't generally better or worse, it's just different than that of a cat or dog so it's better at some thing and worse at others. House pets don't often congregate with other members of their species the way humans do on a daily basis, which I presume would decrease their rates of infection.

    • @garethdean6382
      @garethdean6382 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      In general human immune systems are very good at dealing with invaders. The issue is that certain microbes are adapted specifically to attacking humans or have tumbled across a good general strategy. If you stand on a rusty nail more than a thousand types of bacteria, vriri, fungi and other creatures will invade your body, nearly all we be gone in hours. Only those who have our immune systems figured out in some way (Looking at YOU tetanus.) have a chance. (And even then often only once before we get immunity.)
      I'd recommend looking at Kurzgesagt's video on ebola which shows the many steps the virus takes specifically to shut down mammalian immune systems.There the human immune system falls to elaborate sabotage rather than incompetence.

    Hey fellas, I was wondering if you could ever do a video on the anthropic principle. I was trying to read up on it, but I can't seem to wrap my melon around it. Your videos always help me to understand things better. Thanks. :)

    How weird...I was JUST thinking about this question. I worked for veterinary hospitals for roughly 10 years (1994-2004ish) and I was trying to remember the name of the medicine that is given to dogs in order to get rid of the heartworms once they test positive. It depends on how bad the infection is, but one drug treatment that is used is a derivative or arsenic, believe it or not! It’s called caparsolate. I am writing this comment before viewing the video, but I have no doubt it will be well done!! Happy 2020, and #DFTBA
    Edit: immiticide is another medication used to treat heartworm disease. Again, it just depends if the worms are full grown adults, or microfilaria (baby worms, essentially). Remember to always give your dog heartworm medication!!!! 🐶🐶

    I was a kid in the 80s and I guess medicine for this was either unavailable or too expensive. We had to have the family dog put down due to heartworms.

      I know I am three years late but I was curious and looked it up. The first heartworm medication for dogs was approved by the fda in 1977. So it was probably not common

    My dad never took care of my dog's health, so when I moved out and took her, I spent hundreds of dollars on her treatment and just came short of having to spend thousands more. She'll always be a little sick, but she managed to pull through and can live a regular life now.

    My concern is that people have recently been trying to inoculate more mosquitos with Wolbachia to stamp out malaria because its presence inhibits the parasites. Does this mean greater chances of heartworm infections due to more widespread Wolbachia-infected mosquitos, providing filarial worms with more chances to have bacterial assistance to infection?

  • @blepfish
    @blepfish 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another heartworm fact people should be aware is that the heartworm will only develope in the mosquitoes when the surrounding environment is at a certain temperature for a certain length of time. Which is why you tend to not see heartworm infections in colder areas of the world. But due to a rise in global temperatures heartworms are starting to become more prevalent in areas where they previously were not. So even if you live in an area that has a history of low heartworm cases, I would look into how the statistics are changing in regards to that. Also cats can get heartworm too. Unfortunately though while they do have a different response then humans and dogs it is still an unsuccessful response. Basically their immune system solves the issue of the invader in the house by burning the whole house down.

    Yeah I'm pretty sure I have this. I already know I have pinworms, but now I feel some mass in my heart area, and I also rarely feel something move in my chest that nearly knocks me out. I took this paraguard by zahler and mumica pudica seed (to kill the larger ones), and once I did this and took a dump then went in the shower, My left chest area went completely numb and so did my left arm, I was thinking of even calling for my dad it was that intense, any suggestions, guys? Thanks
