  • The daughter of a 63-year-old Hawaii man said her family faces tens of thousands of dollars' worth of medical bills. This is after her father went through a medical emergency during a layover in South Korea, which has left him stuck in an ICU overseas.

    He’s been in hospital since November 9? Was he a little sick-coughing before the trip? I don’t think couple hrs on layover at the airport would cause pneumonia.

    Usually you can do a payment plan. It is a big bill but he can make payments over time. They usually reduce the bill by like 40% and allow for payments over time.

    Maybe the US embassy in Korea can assist them to get back to Hawaii and also help them workout their hospital expense with the hospital when they get home. Also, always have travel medical insurance when traveling abroad, it’s worth every penny. No pun intended.

      From my limited knowledge of the Korean medical system you pay in full when you are discharged. The cost is not astronomical like in the US. I think the report was he owed so far around $3000 US after over a week in a ICU.I think their main concern was to either fly back now at a cost of $40,000 to $100,000 or to stay until their father is well enough to fly regular commercial.

      so true in the Philippines they will not let you leave the hospital until you pay the hospital bill. sort of being held hostage.

    Here is a newsflash...dont go on vacation without buying insurance its only $125 bucks which includes air ambulance, and now these people are crying about this? its their fault they did not take proper responsibility.. and how does he have medicaid at 63? oh wait low income? I feel sorry for them they put themselves in this position
