I can see why you were quite happy at these Christmas surprises. Very awesome group of sets. I have that same larger baseplate that I got from a random plate purchase on EBay a while back. No idea how to use it at the moment but I think it's real neat. Those sets definitely harken to the prime Pirates era, in my opinion :)
Great video! I had these three sets as a young kid, but mine all came with the standard canons. I was a big collector of the Pirates line and can't remember the shooting canons popping up until the mid 90s. Interesting how many variations there were on these sets.
The cannons are interesting. The ones with the Black handle in the back are "transitional cannons" back then there were certain regulation put on toy manufracturers in the US that didn't allow the shooting cannon there. The cannon with the Black handle was Lego's first reaction to this. They just removed the spring so the cannon wont shoot. This gave them time to develop the non-firing type that was introduced just a little later. These have the crossed sword insignia on them. A few years later they went back to the firing type. I live in europe, we just had one type of cannon instead of three, the firing one.
Those are some really neat sets! Gotta love the 90's building style. I never got many pirates sets, because if I got one, I would want them all. XD I found the rope bridge piece on the floor of some building. I forgot exactly where it was, but it was a great find.
