Excellent review . Silky is the trail saw ninja . One thing I would really wish for is a saw pocket that could be worn like an arrow quiver . A diagonal shoulder strap or a shoulder strap system connected with an adjustable waste strap for fast light trail assault . Super convenient for mountain bikers and hikers .
I carried a Laplander with me around The Nordics and Australia for 20 years. Then I was gifted an outback Silky Pocketboy. Wow, never used a Laplander since. Silky is just the best. I'm looking for a reason to purchase the Big Boy and or Gomboy Outback saws as well.

The Gomboy Outback is going to be my first saw. I Went back and forth for days on what I wanted, without knowing of the Outback series. This video pretty much made my decision easier.

@@carvedwood1953 I bought my Gomboy outback at REI. I’m not sure if they’re still in stock. I used it in my first backpacking trip this weekend and it was a HUGE help processing firewood. But I don’t think you could go wrong with either 🤷🏽♂️
I feel yours is an honest opinion, despite the kit support from Silky. Regarding your comment near the end of the video on downsides: The only downside I can see, which is not really a downside per se, is that you have to know how to use these saws. Otherwise, the blade could be damaged very quickly. I have some appreciation of this as 20ish years ago I purchased a Japanese pull saw for DIY use (most probably from Homebase or B&Q, so not "specialist") and luckily I took note of the name ("pull saw") and RTFM'd, and heeded the instructions, so didn't destroy it and I had pretty wonderful cutting performance. I still have that saw. The other thing I've learned over the last week looking a saws is to choose your saw based on the most common size of what you're sawing. A Pocketboy _can_ saw a fat log, but it won't be fun or fast. I think the Gomboy seems to be the sweetspot, unless you're doing sub-zero backcountry trunk cutting. Thank you for your review, it was very interesting to know the similarities and differences between the models, and real world experiences of use of the saws.
Love my Silky, great saw, I learned the axe first and honestly I prefer saws by a large degree, I carry a lot of equipment that does not require fuel, batteries etc, I don’t like to rely on any of that, I am pretty easy on the saw, I have seen it bend but luckily has not broken with care, I prefer a red or orange handle sometimes I need to set the saw down I don’t want it to hide, I use exclusively the big boy

@@robgerety I was thinking in the Japanese measurements {lived there for 4 years} where 1 sun {3cm} is the way they measure it and that's where it is 10 teeth. It's says that measurement on the Japanese blades. Cheers.
Thanks for the review. I am looking for a good saw for OHV trail maintenance. The Big boy outback looks perfect. We usually need to cut fallen trees about 8-12 inches in diameter, and prefer the light weight vs. mounting a chain saw on a dirt bike

I’ve been using a pair of them for about 4 years now and with their compact light weight, and cutting efficiency they go out with me anytime I’m heading out to the woods when camping or even just processing wood for a backyard bonfire or for the fire pit. One thing you mention is the “stickiness” of the regular saws compared to the new Outback. I agree the regular model is a bit sticky when opening and closing but I spray the pivot bolts with WD-40 and they fold so much smoother, like butter. I ordered all 3 sizes of the Outback series and excitedly awaiting their arrival. Thanks for sharing your review!

I'm wondering your opinion on what to take for backcountry hunting with a hot tent. I would have a decent amount of weight on my back for a multiple day hunt and then the possibility of hauling meat out as well. Mostly cutting dry wood for fires. I was thinking gomboy with medium teeth but it sound like the outback with large teeth may be more sturdy. What do you think? Thank you!
That depends on so many factors. Got an axe? How far north? Most trees already under 20cm/8" where you are? Saving weight I'd even go for the super sturdy pocket boy with straight blade and medium teeth. Lots of factors. I like the outback series though
@woodsmansfinest3814 okay yes. It would be in Montana, USA mountains. I would also be using in North Dakota, USA for winter camping. Temps can easily be well below 0°F. Most trees will be dead fall dry wood. We would have a small splitting axe for winter camping. Probably not for hunting
I have had my Bigboy 2000 for four years now and it’s excellent in every way but the cost of replacement blades which is pricey. I have replaced two blades due entirely to my own negligence not Silky saws design. If your thrifty like me and reuse boards in carpentry projects check for NAILS! I have taken the edge off the blades by cutting into nails.
Here's what I really want to know: First, how well does the sharpness hold up to bone? For hunters (those of us who keep the hide), cutting through deer bone is necessary. It's advertised to cut through bone, but that doesn't mean it can do it very long before the blade is meh. And I'd also like to see someone use a silky down south on real hardwoods. The kind of Florida oak that an axe just bounces off of or gets stuck 1/4" in. Every youtube demonstration is on wood that a kid could chop through.
Performs well on bone. Tested even the regular one on Wapiti. Can't test the saws on wood I don't have... So... I test it on wood I use for carving. I don't stage stuff or pretend. Also... All tools have a life span depending on usage. Silky has great and tough heat treat. Expect a great tool, not magical elven steel.

I use to hunt on private land where I'd throw the buck in the Polaris and drive back to the pole barn. Reciprocating saw makes quick work of cutting off the legs. However I lost that land and will now have to do it in the field where I'm not lugging around a tool. So the pocket size sounds perfect for doing almost nothing but occasional animal work. I don't even know where to start. Steel quality, tooth design, thickness, locking mechanism, handle material, stiffness, cutting performance... It is like comparing a katana to am Ikea knife.
Does 'Limited' mean they will sell out and no more afterwards. I have a Gomboy 240mm and Katanaboy 500. Going to order the Bigboy right now just in case. Does your blade rattles in a handle if not really pressed into it when closed??? Mine, if not really pressed or held with rubber will rattle if loose from hande even for 1 milimeter.. I don't know is that normal
Those aren't flip-flops mate 🙄 those are totems based on the sandals of several indigenous tribes around the world. Most people's of the warmer places in the world use a variation of these exclusively... Including tribes of central America, Africa, South East Asia and of course Japan. They live their lives like that... In the woods. Also healthier for your feet as you build the skills and muscles that you actually need but just lost which has negative impacts on your posture and health. Got it?

Somehow this seems to interest a lot of people. These are Huaraches. Worn by tribes around the globe all their life, by some even for 24 hour long distance running and endurance hunting. Trains your feet and balance, makes you think about steps, movemore quietly and is ultimately much healthier than wearing heavy boots all the time. So, yes, I wear them as often as I can. PS : of course not if I was doing any type of real timer work!

There is nothing truly sustainable given todays population. Hoever, there are things to strive for like long lasting, high quality items. The tone of your question is quite harsh, especially considering that you don't know me. For the sake of answering your "question". Replacement blades are available, they fit all other silky blades, the blades hold up longer because of the coating, which means for most people several years to a lifetime, packaging was more environmentally friendly and the handles are from a BioComposite utilizing no rubber but wood fibers and very small quantities of plastics. So, compared to most saws availablea amd given that saws aren't throwaway items which make a difference regarding sustainability, there are lots of good things here. Cheers

I don’t see the need for them while camping unless you intend to build something, sure they’re great for gardening but I used to camp in freezing and wet conditions without a saw or bush craft knife in my late teens and early twenties. If I had wet wood then I’d wedge fallen branches between a fork in a tree and use leverage to break it. The length of wood didn’t matter either, I’d just lay a three or four meter length across the fire and burn it I half. I once took a bayonet with me but didn’t really need it. Because I would be walking through mountains I wanted to to keep my pack light and all this fancy gear was just extra weight.

I like the Big Boy a lot, but for backwoods packing I take the Gomboy. I also use Sandvik saws in the woods around here.

I don't even know where to start. Steel quality, tooth design, thickness, locking mechanism, handle material, stiffness, cutting performance... It is like comparing a katana to am Ikea knife.
I like the silky outback Pocket boy I have is a very good saw can't weight to get the other ones the gome boy and big boy

The background is beautiful. Thanks for the review, sold me on it. I have a folding saw like a silky that takes reciprocating saw blades made by Lennox. I can use all kinds of blades from metal and very fine wood, to pruning blades. I carry it in my urban EDC.

Does your blade rattles in a handle if not really pressed into it when closed??? Mine, if not really pressed or held with rubber will rattle if loose from hande even for 1 milimeter.. I don't know is that normal

Hey, I'd go large but not XL. Gets you a solid setup for dry and green wood.

Bigboy for sure. Depends if it is a hike, canoe trip, car camping or bike ride but in general I'd go bigboy!

Those aren't flip-flops mate 🙄 those are totems based on the sandals of several indigenous tribes around the world. Most people's of the warmer places in the world use a variation of these exclusively... Including tribes of central America, Africa, South East Asia and of course Japan.
They live their lives like that... In the woods. Also healthier for your feet as you build the skills and muscles that you actually need but just lost which has negative impacts on your posture and health. Got it?

As someone who's worked with indigenous people, the actual fact is that they are generally adapting modern technology where they see fit and keep their own tried and tested technology where advantageous. So you'll find machetes and saws all over the amazon besides bows and arrows, snowmachines in the Arctic besides seal/caribou clothing, and the list goes on indefinitely. Being opinionated isn't hard, building an opinion is hard work.

Do you always wear sandals in the woods?
Somehow this seems to interest a lot of people. These are Huaraches. Worn by tribes around the globe all their life, by some even for 24 hour long distance running and endurance hunting. Trains your feet and balance, makes you think about steps, movemore quietly and is ultimately much healthier than wearing heavy boots all the time. So, yes, I wear them as often as I can. PS : of course not if I was doing any type of real timer work!

There is nothing truly sustainable given todays population.
Hoever, there are things to strive for like long lasting, high quality items. The tone of your question is quite harsh, especially considering that you don't know me.
For the sake of answering your "question".
Replacement blades are available, they fit all other silky blades, the blades hold up longer because of the coating, which means for most people several years to a lifetime, packaging was more environmentally friendly and the handles are from a BioComposite utilizing no rubber but wood fibers and very small quantities of plastics. So, compared to most saws availablea amd given that saws aren't throwaway items which make a difference regarding sustainability, there are lots of good things here.

I use silky saws and would love to purchase one of these (FOMO!) but wouldn’t if I knew the blades were to become obsolete.

I don’t see the need for them while camping unless you intend to build something, sure they’re great for gardening but I used to camp in freezing and wet conditions without a saw or bush craft knife in my late teens and early twenties. If I had wet wood then I’d wedge fallen branches between a fork in a tree and use leverage to break it. The length of wood didn’t matter either, I’d just lay a three or four meter length across the fire and burn it I half. I once took a bayonet with me but didn’t really need it. Because I would be walking through mountains I wanted to to keep my pack light and all this fancy gear was just extra weight.
Cool... Good for you. I've worked in this field professionally and there are 101 reasons to bring a saw over a bunch of other tools... You do you mate.
