    I have been waiting for your posts. Thanks Greg and for all the help! I haven't finished all three videos but I'm doing my best to go through each one meticulously. When you said 100% water change, boy was I ready to learn how you do that! but your approach wasn't at all what I was expecting. Double the water, and you half the concentration ppm of foul contents. Then remove half the water it's still 50% of the concentration. So while it's only really an effective 50% water change, that works for me! I think I can apply that technique very easily. Thanks again, I'm anxious to see all of the videos.

      You are right. I doubled the water then removed half. That is a 100% change, but it maintains enough of the active bioload from the duckweed to support the new fry, while presenting clean water quality parameters. Took me a while to find how to lower the ammonia but preserve the infusoria concentration as much as possible. That does it. Lots of simple stuff that took a while to figure out!

      Yeah, it isn't a 100% percent water change as we think of it, but a 100% change in volume. I certainly did not word it correctly, but everyone knows what I meant. But that is an important change to best prep the water for the spawning. Greg

    Great video so far excited to see the rest. Freezing the brine shrimp is such a genius idea I will definitely be trying that!

    And just when I thought I wanted to stick with livebearers you post this video and got me ready to order some Odessa barbs!

    great 3 part series on odessa. did you leave the lighting on continously during the entire breeding process or turn them off nightly? is this process successful for breeding other barb species?

    • @selectaquaticsoferie
      @selectaquaticsoferie  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I left the lights on 24/7, and others have written that they have used this setup to breed other species of barbs and some tetras. Good luck!

    I will be taking notes Greg, ...Im working on the zebra danio strains and morphs but am planning on breeding white clouds and barbs, so this a great breeding series for me

    I love the sound of bubbling aquariums... so relaxing - because that means there are fish close by! I had no trouble hearing you.
    The 100% water change was simply doubling the amount of water??

    • @selectaquaticsoferie
      @selectaquaticsoferie  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! And yes, doubling the water, then draining it back down.

      Yeah - that's it. As answered above, I tried a couple ways to bring down the accumulating ammonia and bacteria levels while preserving the infusoria for the young fry. That does it. Put in too much water and you lose the infusoria concentration, do just, say, 50%, and the water is too rich in bacteria when you add the adults on day 5, and you end up doing a water change when the adults are added, negating the 2 days growth of infusoria you had just gained.

      Thank you - I don't want to respond negatively to those who complain, but this is how all fish rooms sounded until the introduction of the linear piston pump! What people that complain do not realize is that this room is too large for the largest linear piston - even if I had close to $1000 to put one in and restructure the air lines. That's a relatively quiet 1/4 hp blower, I have some eight horse blowers here that are much, much louder!
      And yeah, as explained above it's a 100% percent by volume, not mixed content. I could have worded it better!

    Nice greg thanks for dropping the knowledge. My plan is stock my next tank with your fish the problem is you have too many that I like.

    Like the video but so hard to hear u over ur blower pump could u turn it off or where a mic maybe

    • @selectaquaticsoferie
      @selectaquaticsoferie  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As mentioned above, it is a relatively quiet blower as quarter horse blowers go, and turning the air off just leads to spooked, uncomfortable fish. As the fishroom is all about the healthy and happy fish I work hard to maintain, it makes little sense to show them only when they are unhappy and stressed out! I am limiting the amount of time spent speaking in the fishroom from a distance, and am working on other sound recording equipment. Thank you for your comment!

    Wow I didn't realize you had such soft water 90 ppm for raising livebearers. I know livebearers generally prefer hard/alkaline water to flourish and breed well. I know they can adapt to any water parameter and you have a great amount of success breeding livebearers in such soft water. Did you have problems in the beginning with your fry batches?

    • @selectaquaticsoferie
      @selectaquaticsoferie  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the fish have been at Select Aquatics for 10-15 years, or longer. I used to sell fish at ALA conventions back when people used to sell fish from their rooms, and these lines have become accustomed to the softer water. Some livebearers will not thrive here, or require maintenance of the water I am not able to do consistently enough, and I have chosen not to stock those here. Limia perugia is a good example. Had some beautiful fish, but they just did not adapt well enough to produce in quantities I could distribute back out to the hobby. As a result the livebearers here can adapt to a wide range of customer water conditions.

      With some species, yes, and a few species, such as the Characodons went through a gradual acclimation to the softer water. I still add crushed coral to the velifera tanks.

    We had 3 males and 2 females sitting in a 20g we took out of our 125g cuz they were causing problems.. def didn’t have enough females to males... we have 2 males and 2 females to a family member and the next day (today) I noticed we had 2 fry in our 20g and possibly a 3rd... what luck lol.. all’s we had in the tank was a sponge filter 5 rocks and a ceramic tube. No plants and bare bottom. We added some fake plants in hopes the remaining male doesn’t eat them. :)
