    Great narration man and enjoyed your finale at the end !! Inventiveness prevails with the rat trapping. Great ideas man.. I’m going to be trying this in Maine of 2020. Appreciate these invaluable tips!!
    Yeah I cold smoke mackerel here using yellow birch wood and the taste resembles that of ham. The texture of the flesh resembles cheese. I could eat this every day. I tell you the reason why people consume so much salmon every year is because these oily fish like mackerel, herring, sardines will keep you warm in winter. The oils from marine mammals and oily fish keep you warm.
    Yeah notice my legs are tough like iron full with stamina ingesting black bear meat. Moose meat too I eat that raw.
    Best tasting game meat I ever ate so far to me was OTTER!! Love that in a crockpot.
    Been decades since I used my game calls. I need to get up to Alaska and wanted to go to Greenland, Northern Canada.
    Love duck hunting and that has been a decade or more since I duck hunted. Time goes by fast in my area when your busy foraging for wild foods, hunting,trapping.

    When you get them in both feet, with traps on opposite sides, I call that a sucess... Hahahaha, that was great, and funny too... Nice sets, and I just love the way it feels watching this videos, filmed on the head mount...

    The value in a muskrat is the fur. They are used for the inside liner of gloves, inside of mink or sable coats, inside fur hats, and also make really nice blankets if you get enough. They are used to teach kids trapping skills and the meat can be used as bait for trapping other predators during season.

      How much do you get for each rat skin if you were to sell them ?

    • @friedgizzard
      @friedgizzard  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on where China is with their inventory. If China is buying they can bring $5-$8 usd, if China is not buying they may only bring $1 usd. They can be used to make really nice blankets or the liner for hats, gloves, and coats if a person is making their own goods.

    I miss the days when I was in highschool and rats were everywhere. Our rat population is way way down. We have high mink populations currently and river otters are making an very strong comeback. Since my father caught one in a 1 1/2 coilspring when I was in middle school I've saw multiple family units of otter. Just this past Saturday I saw 4 sitting on a rock in the middle of a stream in the county east of me. Hopefully our wmu gets a season soon.

    I really like your setup. I always set them on the bank. You are much more successful !!! Is this something you came up with or did you purchase the setups somewhere? What size and kind of rubber grommet is holding the system up?

    • @friedgizzard
      @friedgizzard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I came up with the setups, i only use my small kayak so space is limited, the poles are fiberglass driveway markers from lowes, the baskets are bird feed baskets, and a piece of clear tubing slides on the pole and the pvc coupling just sits on it.

    Great video, beautiful country up there!
    How long are the fiberglass driveway markers that you are using, and what is their approximate diameter? Also what did you use to make the incision in the PVC couplings to hold your traps? I would like to try to make a few of these sets up as I have a client who has a tremendous muskrat problem in one of their ponds.

    • @friedgizzard
      @friedgizzard  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just posted another video about the fiberglass rods, they are 48" long and like .375" round (whatever that is). I just place the pvc coupling in a vice and used a hand miter saw to make the cut. The miter saw blade thickness is about perfect to hold number 1's.

    I'm 49 and want to start trapping here in Nebraska. I only have a couple of wma near me. Any suggestions? Just a couple of #1's to start with. I like your pole method. Thanks for the tip! Something I can make myself.

    • @friedgizzard
      @friedgizzard  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The very first thing is to make sure you know the trapping laws for your state and each wma that you are interested in. Take time to call the local game warden or biologist or fish and game office or all 3. After that buy a dozen or so legal traps, 110 bodygrips (make sure to get a safety grip) and #1 footholds if both are legal. Then spend every free moment in the woods, do alot more looking and observing than you do setting traps. You just need to see an animal to hunt it, but you have to know where an animal will place its foot in order to trap it. I have alot of equipment because i like to invent stuff for no reason. Bodygrips in a tunnel and a foothold just under the water on the end of a log is really all a person needs for success. Good luck and have fun.

    • @friedgizzard

    Where did you get the rods for those sets? Also, what footholds were you using at the time?

    • @friedgizzard

      The rods are driveway markers sold at the hardware store by the yard sale signs. The traps are sleepy creek number 1 and victor number 1 jump traps.
