In his first ever solo Album, Biff takes on not just tales and stories from his heart and soul, but also investigates the Middle Ages and Medieval history amongst other subjects.
School of Hard Knocks was produced by Biff Byford, recorded by Jacky Lehmann at Brighton Electric Studios in Brighton (UK) and mixed at Queen Street Studios in Stockholm (Sweden) by Mats Valentin. The album also features guest appearances by Phil Campbell (Motörhead/Phil Campbell & The Bastard Sons), Alex Holzwarth (Rhapsody of Fire, Turilli / Lione Rhapsody), Nick Barker (Voices), Dave Kemp (Wayward Sons) and Nibbs Carter (Saxon).
On School of Hard Knocks, Byford worked with Fredrik Åkesson (Opeth) on guitars, Christian Lundqvist on drums and Gus Macricostas on bass (Biff himself played a spot of four string thunder too!).

This is a great song, I mean I've just started listenin' to it, and already I'm commentin', this sounds more like Old School Saxon than Saxon's shit today, I mean I prefer the more raw, gritty, blue collar early Saxon to the more modern Power Metal soundin' Saxon of today, I mean I don't listen to much Saxon, but I definitely acknowledge their impact.
It's one of the reasons why I respect this man as much as I do. He's driven to do what he loves to do, and he doesn't let anything stop him.

Biff Byford, definitely one of the all time heavy metal voice legends. It is sometimes hard to grasp that this man has been rocking longer than rest us mortals have walked this earth. And yes, this track is solid. Early 80's Saxon shines nicely thrue. Steady, thick and groovy guitar melody + that slick solo! Well done. Godspeed, Biff!

I like it more than current releases of Saxon.
Sometimes people want to do other projects where they can have more overall control of the musical direction versus being in a band where it’s more democratic. This is Biff doing what he wants and everyone else goes along, unlike Saxon where other people have creative input and a say in things.
