I remember going deep about background processes when I got a cheapo 250€ laptop for highschool in 2008. It came preinstalled with Windows Vista for which it was extremely underpowered. I got it down to the bare minimum with XP, and it ran faster/better then a lot of the way better laptops some of my friends had. It was at that time that a spark in me was lit for performance-optimization, a real respect for ram-usage and computing resources. That spark made me a better software-engineer in the long run, since I tend to feel dirty if something simple takes way too much resources. Something I see constantly in the modern JavaScript-Ecosystem.
Size doesn't matter, it's the motion in the ocean.
6 inches enough, right ?
Do it like they do it on Discovery Channel.
maybe not... but it DOES cover up or mask a multitude of uhh.. umm.. talent issues..
3 inches .. enough right? Girl said it was the perfect size but I'm not sure
@@somebody69747 3 inches..... FROM THE GROUND... smFh
Don't care about processes count if my computer runs good enough, but scrolling through shit on windows that I don't even use and can't uninstall is just hideous.
size doesnt matter, personality does mate, personality. 😊
(she lied)
Your girls a sentient memory leak mate.
😂
Seems to me the cheaper the pc/laptop, the more process count matters. You can't have a process without memory use afaik, and manufacturers are still selling price point devices with 4gb memory with slow and small (swap file etc) emmc storage.
That’s the case for my Samsung Galaxybook. I got the 8 GB RAM model because it was the cheapest and I didn’t know better at the time. Linux runs smoothly on it without any fans turning on, but on windows it seems like the fans are always running.
@@breakfastattwilightyou can tweak that too and if the CPU is good enough you can limit the max usage and minimum usage
It's all about " The PC interactions feel worse, Lets check what's changed "
It was the case that you'll have a relatively constant list of processes , and a new one appearing is probably the one responsible when something goes wrong, you'll remove that problematic app or restrict it.
But, the amount of processes and services that CHANGE every month became a problem,
so "focus on count" right?!,
but:
more apps/abilities/sale-options on your small PC ->
more demand on HW ->
more access restrictions ->
more grab-whatever-you-can attitude by apps on resources ->
more inter-app commerce ->
more detailed comm restrictions ->
Looking at the "process count" just won't cut it anymore.
We to conduct a personal update review, for any update of/within any app, and use a tester-app - that also gives us one place on the PC UI - to find "all updates to any app/driver/os in the past week". replacing the "process manager" for the mentioned scenario.
hopefuly the tester app Menus won't change their functionality or appearence every month :)
Again with how large CPUs are now, unless an app is not behaving, you got so much CPU overhead you wont notice background apps running. Like any $100 modern CPU
Speaking of how good modern CPUs are... Previously, I had an FX-6350 and now I have a 7600X and it's insane how much better it is. Like, the most surprising thing to me was that I could use my PC just fine even if the CPU is at 100% load, like when running a benchmark or mining monero. If I did that on my old pc, it would've been almost unusable. Although it only had a modernish 7200 RPM 2 TB HDD and only 8 GB of RAM, and now I have a 2 TB NVME SSD (Kingston KC3000) and 32 GB of RAM so that could play into this, but I doubt that even with a SATA SSD and more ram it wouldn't be still very slow under a full load.
Putting my browser on the e-cores has been the best decision I’ve made for gaming optimisation
What's an e-core?
Efficient cores, i suppose. Some modern cpus have low performance cores for energy and temperature saving and high performance cores for demanding tasks.
But i dont know that you can manually assign processes that way.
@@ZorMonyou can in the task manager idk if it's permanent but sure there's a command line for that
what did you use to put the browser on the e-cores?
I got my Windows process count down to 0 by installing Manjaro KDE.
@@kishirisu1268I play all the games I want to on Steam. All the Halo games, all the Batman Arkham games, NBA2k games, Splitgate, Titian Fall. I'm sure there are games I might not be able to run, but that's all the games I have installed because I actually have a real life. I have 12 processors and 64gb of ram with a really good gpu, so if I ever find one it won't handle, I'll just use KVM to pass thru the hardware to a windows vm, but like I said, I have a life, so I don't see that happening any time soon.
Now you have a Manjaro problem though
@@georgehelyarYeah, I've heard that. Thing is, I've been using it for 4 years now and it's been the best experience I've had on Linux. I don't particularly like a few things they've done and I would move to another rolling release if I could find one that is better. I've tried them all. I began my Linux journey about 10 years ago after being a Windows/Dos programmer for over 30 years.
@@kishirisu1268and this is where you are wrong. Almost all games by now run in proton in steam, or with wine dxvk.
while this is true in technicality, in any real-world case between comparable systems process count is a fine heuristic. It can be very inacurrate when you start comparing systems that have very little in common (for instance IIRC linux process counts can be in the 500s for a basic desktop environment yet run faster than a windows machine under a fifth of that) but between vaguely similar systems this is more of a "hey did you know that frankenstein was the na-" *_yes_*
Would be nice to see what Processes have the highest Switch/Cycle deltas over 10min / 5 mins / 60 seconds time-frames (like the load monitor count) so you can see what processes take up the most of you cycles a lot easier.
You can also use a process hacker as well. I know it has deltas and a better layout. Its a FOSS project as well. processhacker.sourceforge.io/
more processes=more interrupts=more bad
Baaaaad
Definitely do one for Linux for us Linux nerds! This was educational though and a lot of this can likely be applied to a Linux system minus the... 🤢 telemetry.
is there a big list of services/processes' names and an explanation of each one and whether its safe to disable?
Yup, bveen loooking for something like this fdor years.

MS Edge it's always running by default, but you can deactivate that in settings - system and performance and turn off fast start and the other below. Google Chrome does the same thing, maybe others does that too.
I deleted ms edge from my pc
Awesome , thank you for all the stuff u show for all of us . Really apreciate :)
I would like if you could make a video talking about "Misconceptions about timers (HPET, TSC, PMT...)" Melody Ultra tweak pack
Thank you!!, have great day everybody 😉
u can lower it by disabling services in Task Scheduler , System Configuration
True it only takes 1 process to have issues but point being the more processes you have the higher chance you'll have a problem.
What we have here are several types of users. If you still have Edge running in the background on your system you are one type of user. If you don't have edge running in the background anymore you are another type of user. If you don't have edge, defender, the store, and a pile of other crap no longer running in the background on your system, you probably don't care, and certainly have no "delta" issues.
General questions, not related to this video (not sure if there's a place on your site to pose a question):
I have two annoying issues with Windows 11.
1. I can't remove an additional language I added before from GUI. I do that, it returns back after a restart. MS says to reinstall it and then uninstall, same thing, it returns. I attempted some registry fix I don't recall now that also didn't work (there was no second language to remove).
2. Windows "spotlight" search is activated with alt+space. Where do I remove this a horrible thing that keeps removing the focus from the game I'm playing in the middle of the action? What is it called?
Keep the tips coming, and thank you!
**edit**
The windows "spotlight" feature I was talking about is part of powertools, which I do have installed. Its name is actually "powertoy run". It can be disabled from the options for power toos (gear icon in the system tray, you need to scroll a bit).
Still looking for solution for the language bug
On my main pc which runs a ryzen 7 i don't notice any difference between a stock windows install running 150+ processes and my tweaked version which has around 70 processes. Its definitely noticeable on my low end stick pc which runs a celeron processor, if i install gnome on opensuse my process count is about 120 and runs noticeably slower than if i i run opensuse with xfce where the process count is only around 70.
as a good first past, process count matters. not everyone has the expertise to understand what processes are doing what or how taxing they are.
Got my win 11 down to 98 processes. During gaming epic games only. 101. Laptop runs so smooth, no stutter, no bloat, no micro spying "telemetry", no defender, no back door edit registry edits.
Without my edited win11 I was doing 250 260 processes junk.
I got my Win 11 down to about 48-50 Processes. It was just a fun test to make it the lowest possible by disabling Services. Would I recommend? No. Fun project? If you got the time, yes. Or just use an older Windows like 8.1 for how optimized it is.
@@Daltonisntabot i got 29 on win11 lol defiently not reccomended
@@hunterisgood9906 At just 50, settings was broken. Couldn't edit some things in it. Still a fun project and did save RAM and other things, but... you might be better off just using an older Windows, like 7 and making sure you take the right precautions. I still think it was fun though, personally.
lol, less is definitely better if processes are consuming unnecessary amounts of ram. Why wouldn’t you want to have a clean and tidy system with as little amount of bloat or processes rubbing as possible…
Someone didn’t watch the video
more process = more wasted memory = more pagefile switching = slow system (of course it depends of how much total ram you have)
Did you forget to link to a vid of nvclean? Thanks for all your videos.

All my linux mates think I'm alittle crazy because I tell them that Windows is about to make a transition, into a full linux kernel under the hood before 2032. What do you think about that prediction Chris ?
The only clue i have of this is the linux stuff already within Windows over the years.
Just run windows enterprise and disable telemetry and be done with it.
You can also point it to your activation server.....
Informative video. Thanks.
I'm confused... this seems obvious to me, I've always been more interested in the actual resources--CPU and RAM--that a particular process is taking up. I don't care all that much how *many* processes there are, as long as the number is not excessive; in other words, a lower number is preferrable, but as long as it's not a bunch of 100% unnecessary and unused processes artificially inflating process count, then it's fine with me.
Windows already comes with useless processes out the ass, but you're right that just adding something like antivirus (people do that these days?) or installing a bunch of game launchers and having them all start at login and run in the background will really make a noticeable effect on the performance of a machine. Just one reason I stopped using that OS entirely by around 2006, as Microsoft was trying to foist Vista upon XP users.
9:30 so that's what it's supposed to do.
However as we all know the windows index is a piece of terd.
Agreed, Everything search is much better.
@@ChrisTitusTechI looked into it, it's great. Is it safe to set it's service on manual?
ya , when i run your Utility i get this in yellow " warning scheduled task microsoft\windows\application experience\marebackup was not found"
For low end PC's it matters
Hello chris,
After watching your tier vid i tried nobara on a secondary ssd for the first time. I think it went well and i think the os is great (i only play world of warcraft at a very competitive level and other games i dont look for maximising performance).
However with kde 6 coming and nobara not being rolling edge i decided to go back to windows for a bit while waiting for the big guys to update stuff as hdr is a big deal for me and there are a lot of bugs, i'm not into learning stuff by myself to make my distro optimised for my needs even though i agree this is the whole point of linux. Just not for now.
That being said i kept watching other videos and i heard about a distro called cachy os which i am going try out soon as it is rolling edge with lots of optimisations and CPU specific instructions and having nvidia gpu i want the latest updates.
My question is : did you ever try cachy os and do you think its pointless and would advice arch ? If not, would you consider giving it a go ? I feel like this might have something very promising for gamers.
Can you do this with a stock .iso?
That was a great explanation!
Thanks!
No matter what I do, the best way to take control of your computer is Linux. Is this "Windows Wednesday" turning into "I'll just make videos about windows"? Weekly Windows? I'm just asking. Whatever you do, don't sell your soul to Cthulhu!
Or Cthapple.
Just asking! I'm sure Microsoft has it's points, and I'm just think, if indeed I think, is easier to handle. And start!
To be really fair, Windows needs to go to their microtransactions, renting scheme, to survive. Just my opinion.
And "phone Home" what is that all about? I have a licence, and they're delaying my startup by checking if I really, I mean really, have a license to use their shitty OS? Really?
Go back to talking about Linux, this Windows crap is just as useful as a barrel full of walrusses! "Here's another problem with Windows 11, and you can't do shit about it" Yay?
i hate microsoft edge so much, had to remove it completely with revo uninstaller and disable things in autoruns etc its crazy how stuck it is in windows

Is it possible you could ad the balanced snappy power plan to the CTT tool ? please and thankyou
This isn't even showing Windows Update running in the background which actually slows down the system.
thorium apk should have a option to bring down the toolbar to bottom like chromite
Does up time matter?
I mean yeah the system needs some sleep too atleast a restart. No big problems will come up but up time being low will definitely make a difference. I got to use a school laptop when all the devices were swapped for new ones a year before. I just for fun went to the task manager to check the stats. You know what the up time was? 330 days lol. That 1 year old device was even slower than my 15 year old laptop.
Yeah.
Try staying awake for a week and see how you feel.
No ask why should my pc should be any different. 😂

i guess the process count makes no more sense since windows 10, this is valid only until 7 and in my case i just use as parameter to ensure is running all well after fresh install or to ensure that system is clean. After whole redesign in 8 and new storage technologies coming like ssds this not more a big problem, the process counting is more valid to PCs running with HDD because their speed limitation and latency.

bro can i stop macbook ram swap
I think the biggest problem is that people focus too much on tweaking Windows etc. rather than just getting better at games. I wish I did the same.
??
Getting better at games doesn't fix their stuttering issues or poor performances
Tweaking windows will take maybe like 10hours total over the years. Those 10hours are not going to make someone a better player.
I feel like tweaking Windows to optimize older/low-end machines is more common than tweaking specifically for gaming. Many users enjoy the challenge of fine-tuning their systems for better performance.

What I can't stand is how intrusive Edge is. Constantly have to Block it's upgrades, and force shutting it down.
I agree. Edge is a very good bowser in the core but i dont want to use it because is so intrusive, cluttered and agressive to the users and is becoming even worse with the giant colorfull copilot button than opens only hovering it with the mouse, popups every where asking me questions, etc. Is atrocious.
