Nal those are fighting words because you’re showing your stupidity!!! They are based from the same foundation but their artistic approach is different !!! I love 💕 them both , they are both great. And that’s from the product of the Greatest Generation. I was 15 when the first one came out . Both Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp are great actors and although they played Willy differently they were both brilliant in their performances
Personally (and I was born in the 80s, enjoyed Dahl's books growing up, and probably saw the older movie for the first time sometime in the 90s) I say that:
1. Wilder's performance as Wonka was full of so much charm, everything about him including "Pure Imagination" and the boat tunnel song was great
2. Depp's performance as Wonka wasn't "bad" necessarily, just... different... I don't know, there's just more of a "disconnected from reality" approach going on there. Wilder's version is a man that's grounded in reality (he has a whimsical twist on most things, but he's still a real person trying to run a business) while Depp's version is more of an otherworldly being. He's like an incarnation of Loki, or something. A god of chaos and whimsy who lives by his own rules about how the reality around him behaves.
3. 1971's Oompa Loompa song just annoys me, and I say song instead of songs because they recycle so much of it every time it comes up and it always sounds the same despite the changes in the lyrics, it was fine the first few times hearing it but it wore out its welcome fast and now I can't stand it anymore
4. 2005's Oompa Loompa songs rocked, plus I appreciate that they actually kept lyrics as close as they could to what was actually in the book for each naughty kid's custom tailored send-off
5. In just about everything else about either movie outside of the above points, I generally have to give credit to the newer version.
I learned recently that there's a new movie that's been in production. (Coming out next year, I think?) The title is just Wonka, it's starring... I forget who... someone I hadn't heard of before... And it's apparently a prequel, so they're making up new stuff instead of just adapting the book a third time. I wonder how that's going to turn out.

The 1970s Willy Wonka is my favorite my favorite part of the movie is the wallpaper scene because no I know what a schnoz berry is. Due to the author of the book using it in another book with more context.
