    You’re so spot on! I’m Asian American and my brother is now Singaporean. I’m there once a year. I really love and prefer hawker centers. They’re so good! I go there mainly to bond with my brother and second are their foods! Their clothings do cost more but they have more colorful choices. And we do fly to the neighboring Asian Countries too during weekends. Love using Deliveroo app whenever I feel lazy going out due to the heat. But overall, I consider Singapore my second home. Happy Lunar new year! Of all the countries I’ve been to so far.. Singapore is where East meets West 😊

    Please do not call someone near your age range + 10 auntie or uncle.
    They are mostly reserved for people considered to be older than u by a generation.
    Like if you are 20, you can call someone in their late 30s close to 40s uncle or auntie, but call someone that looks around your age like 23 an uncle and good luck.

    • @CharAzn1979
      @CharAzn1979 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rule of thumb U only call someone Uncle or Auntie if he/she looks older than 50-60.

      Easiest just follow ur parents. If looks like ur parents age call em uncle/auntie. If look like your grandparents(wrinkled,white hair) call them ah peh(encik for malay)/ah ma.
      You can call grandies age uncle/auntie also.

    It mostly rains during the Monsoon season: [mostly during the months of] October to February.
    Using public transport, [depending on where you are going] it takes up to 2 hours to reach a destination across the island.
    For me, Singapore seems like a 'world in a city' because there are specific 'towns' [regions or districts] designated for different cultures.
    [also] Depending on where you are [not limited to districts], the prices for services might vary.

  • @StarSpawn06

    Well, the temperature does drop below 30 at night, and if you're sleeping in the wilderness (e.g. camping) it can still feel quite cold if you don't wear enough (the high humidity causes your body to lose heat faster and thus feel colder than in a place with same temperature but low humidity).
    Of note was the cool spell at the beginning of this year which was part of a temporary global cold spell. In northern and temperate places like China and the U.S. the cold was unbearably harsh.
    Here in Singapore, I was able to go out in a sweater and not feel hot :)
    Alas, like all good things it didn't last XD

      I would say it only works in the CBD, don't try it outside the ZONE! That being said, its getting outta hand and even though I understand the need for Chope, short lunch hour, long queues at stalls, but like all things, people abuse the system, and I'm a bit on the fence as to whether such a culture should be promoted. I once saw this guy sitting down at a place that wasn't busy(there were empty seats at other tables, but this was the only empty table), taking the pack of tissues and wiping the table for his own use, and when the people who left it came back, he was like oh, do you want it back? I chuckled thinking good on him, but borderline nasty! There's no need to chope a whole damn table for two people.

    Hi Georgia,
    I'm moving to Singapore in August. I've watched a few of your videos and they've been really helpful. Now that you've lived there for several years, could you advise where would be the best place(s) to live?
    Thanks :)

    • @flyhi2773
      @flyhi2773 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Riby Having lived there, I have to say its a hard question to answer not knowing where you'll be working, and what your budget is. Most westerners tend to have very good jobs, often in the city so will live very close to the city center, a little off Orchard Road, Scott's Road or fairly nearby or East Coast Parkway area between the main city area and the airport. These would be fairly typical areas with lots of private condominium apartments. Houses are rare and expensive but you get old colonial houses most again near the Orchard Road area, Jervois Road as an example. Outside of these areas it's predominantly HDB housing for the locals with a good few private condominium apartments built among them. A little outside the city center Holland Village / Dover Road area you can find houses too but it's not ideal if you're working in the financial area, be a bit of a long commute.

    • @scottriby9907
      @scottriby9907 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Yes I've been told by numerous people that Orchard Road and Holland Village are great areas. I'll be working towards the west, so not necessarily near the city centre. I don't want to be travelling too far to work so potentially areas like Clementi or Jurong would also be good for me to commute to/from. Thanks for all the other suggestions :) I'm sure once I get out there and have a good look around I'll have a better idea

    Hi! Your videos are so helpful couz there is less info about Singapore on the internet. I heard that buying food from a hawker center or smt is cheaper than cooking. Is it true?

    • @GeorgiaCaney

    • @PeachyMangoPie
      @PeachyMangoPie 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yuka Hi. I'm Singaporean and I dare say eating out even at hawker centres on a daily basis (3× a day)would eventually deplete your monthly pay. Shopping for groceries isn't expensive if you know where to shop at. Locals usually shop for groceries at supermarkets like NTUC FAIRPRICE(conveniently located at most heartland malls or near MRT stations), SHENG SHIONG, GIANT or the markets and wet markets around the neighbourhood. Prices at the abovementioned are definitely cheaper than those at Cold Storage or NTUC FINEST. So you gotta do your little research before making your purchase. 😊😁

      Yuka it's a pleasure to help:-) Eating out at hawker centres, coffees shops, food courts(located inside malls) versus cafes, restaurants save you more money.
      To experience the vast array of Singaporean food, they are also a better option. If you need more help, I'll be more than happy to share. :-)

    • @crystal8537

      Not rly... Most Singaporeans prefer home cooked food simply bc its actually cheaper (depending on what you buy) & most importantly, home cooked food is WAY healthier!!!! Hawker, foodcourt and restuarants are expensive and awful...!!!

      I lived there once. Because its so clean I had no problem with insects. I don't think I ever even saw a cock roach and hardly ever got bitten by mosquitos even. We did get geckos, but they're 100% harmless but they didn't seem to like air-conditioning... Maybe why I never got one in the bedroom. Snakes? Condiminiums, city center you'd be unlikely to come across them. You could living as I did, in a house with a garden - lived on the edge of a golf course and with that yes, we did get them and in a big way!!! Black spitting cobras!!!! But generally speaking you'll not have to worry about things like that in most of Singapore.

    What’s the older generation? Few years older? Sign of respect? or senior citizen older? Will I be called auntie? I am 45+

    • @ToBeAlive2023
      @ToBeAlive2023 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      haha. No. Generally we don't call foreigners aunties or uncles. It will be weird. It applies to bosses and people in position of respect of power as well (ie we can't call them that, suicidal). And sometimes aunties and uncles are used to poke fun at friends and colleagues. Its all very confusing, so you'll have to live here and observe how it is being used in its context ... i can't even explain it well....haiz

    Hi Georgia, what about health insurance, social welfare and medical cost? My wife and I are mostly concerned about health cost for our little boy of 2-years-old since the education cost is already pretty high in Sg. Also doing a little bit of sport daily (badminton and running) a twisted ankle is always around the corner for us.
    Do you use a specific health insurance as an expat in Singapore? How much a routine visit to the doctor does cost? A visit to the emergency service? Thank you 🙏🏼

      @TheDcorgaez 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      there are community centres which provide courts for badminton at the price of perhaps $2 for an hour, and u can usually run/jog around ur estate. theres also usually gyms in the commuity centre. for visits to doctors as foreigners, its honestly quite pricy, per visit to the polyclinic may cost up to 50 dollars, however if u become a permanent resident, it drops to $20+ and singapore schooling students/ elderly have it at $10+ . As for private clinics im not too sure but it is costly for foreigners that i can say.

    Actually there is more ways to address those more older than you, beside Uncle & Auntie... which is in English/Singlish...
    For people slightly older than you (10+yrs)Ah Hian - Elder BrotherAh Ze - Elder Sister
    For those 20+yrs older than you... Uncle and/or Auntie will usually do... but also in their Chinese/Dialect form.
    For those much older... 30+yr as an example..Ah Beh - Older Uncle (father side)Ah Mm - Wife of Older Uncle (father side)
    Or those really old, example, you are below 20yrs and addressing someone in their late 60s...Ah Gong - GrandfatherAh Ma - Grandmother
    Of course.... the above are usually spoken and used by local S'porean, mostly by Chinese, although Malays and Indians are known to use it too when addressing elderly Chinese....

    Call anyone "uncle" and they reserve the right to answer, "yes auntie".

    • @teohrex9557
      @teohrex9557 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't work like that. I'm not Singaporean. I am Malaysian but in Malaysia it works the same way as it does in Singapore. When u call someone uncle or auntie it's usually when they are a lot older than u and you don't even have to related. So lets say u get in a taxi and there's a older man you can say "Hello uncle can you take me to Changi Airport terminal 3 ah?". Think of it as a sign of respect. So you can't just call anyone uncle or auntie but if you are a foreigner or don't look Singaporean/Malaysian just address them as you would normally do.
