Shashi Tharoor interview on 'clear conscience' over wife's death - and Hindu nationalism

  • The Indian politician and author Shashi Tharoor summoned by a Delhi Court on charges of abetting his wife's alleged suicide, has dismissed the accusation as “preposterous”.
(Click to subscribe for more Channel 4 News videos.
    th-cam.com/users/channel4news?...)
In an interview with Channel 4 News to promote his new book, he says he is able to keep working through it all because “It helps to have a clear conscience Krishnan, I do.”
He tells presenter Krishnan Guru-Murthy: “I’ve been co-operating fully with the four and a half years of investigations and I’ve always maintained we should have faith in our legal system and our judicial process and we should see it through the process. So of course, whatever the law requires I am very confident there’s no basis whatsoever for these charges and I intend absolutely, vigorously to contest them within the law.
“I believe these charges are preposterous, I believe they’re baseless, there isn’t a shred of truth in either the charge that there was any foul play, or any crime was involved in the tragic and premature death of my wife. I want to see justice done, but at this point I can’t enter into the merits of it. It’s a process that has to be gone through before judges and court.”

I assure you, if instead of pappu Gandhi they nominate tharoor as the pm candidate for 2019, Congress stands a fair chance of winning.
Edit: i would like to take back the title of pappu and address him as he was named Rahul

us dgreat Dr. Swamy's journey from a staunch anti RSS crusader who went from calling Sonia, Mayawati and Jaylalitha devi's to defender of hinduism and the anchor of hindutva is a straight 180 degree u turn quite similar to a chameleon
These days direct means behaving like a complete troll......while his intellect and intelligence is beyond any doubt, his grasp of economics commendable especially given his age and experience ,the utilisation of this talent as an average politician makes him and Tharoor two sides of the same coin ....ie suspect motives behind the genius

Also, being a secularist myslef, I'd prefer learning more about my religion from someone like him than a so called "dignified" Hindu. Words like those are still proof castism, elitism and similar ideologies exist in Hindu society even though the Constituiton asks all people to be treated equally. Make no mistake, I respect the Gita, Quran and Bible equally but none of them comes anywhere near the Constituition of India. It is above all religions and all ideologies for me.

I am not Hindu, nor am I Indian, but every time I listen to Shashi Tharoor speak, I feel such a deep sense of contentment (and admittedly quite a bit of envy for such a representative). It is rare to find someone so well spoken who is also open minded, inclusive, and caring, all while maintaining a position in the volatile (and generally vitriolic) world of politics. A rare gem such as this man should be greatly appreciated, even if you disagree with his views. An intelligent discussion of ideas can accomplish much, yet the potential for polite discourse is often smothered by louder angrier voices of those who wish to bully you to their side rather than sway you with logic and kindness. As an American, I am sad that the most negative sides of people has become the public norm in today's toxic political arena and can only dream of having someone like Shashi represent my interests. As an outsider, I realize there is much I could never understand about the people of India's individual needs and dreams, but, with great respect, my wish is that you are able to come together above the typical (and vast) lines of division to rally behind such an inspiration as this. Or, at the very least, seek the common theme of peace, empathy, and inclusiveness that we Americans seem unable to find.

I was born a hindu but was raised as a catholic and I completely agree with ur version of Hinduism and strongly condemn the acts of Hindutva groups who are Killing the core values of the very religion they are trying to save, which definitely they cannot because this beautiful religion doesn't need saving. till the time there are seekers Hinduism will be alive. Also please ask the INC to consider you as the PM candidate instead of Rahul Gandhi im sure the congress will have much better chances. Congress 's future in India ended the day the PM from their party stood at Red Fort and said that all resources of India first belongs to minority. At that point the majority realised that this isn't about making minority feel secure in India but to play the vote bank politics by giving preference to one group over other.

There is a different pleasure in listening to intellectual educated politicians like Tharoor. Such a clarity of thoughts. Although I Don't associate myself with any religion now, my experience says Hinduism should be more like what he essentially is talking about. But since it is being encroached upon by stone age mentality of hindutva that rejects the idea of secularism, plurality and acceptance and speaks about some weird Hindu rastra, reclaiming hindu space etc is what prompted me and many of my friends to keep ourselves away from this stupid religious affair. If this goes on, I am sure many sensible coming generation people are going to renounce religions. Well not a bad idea though.

I agree with Tharoor, pure religion is based on faith between one person and his God. Unfortunately, the oneness or singularity of faith has been abducted by organized religions. The danger of organized religion is that it interprets, defines and preaches what religion should be to the masses. The oneness has been replaced with collectivism. In the early days of religion, the masses were illiterates and uneducated and people relied on priests, swamis, and imams for divine interpretation. That no longer is true, people can pick up a holy book, read and interpret the passages themselves. Today's organized religions are polluted with monetary gain, political gain, and influence peddling.

I'm grateful to see someone represent real Sanathana Dharma, and not just the ignorant dogma embodied by the BJP.
I like that Modi is having India own the identity of things like Yoga on the world stage. However, I'm tired of BJP's dogmatic intolerance. Yes, through hundreds of years, some people following other religions have done hindus wrong, but we always rose above it and survived because of our decency and tolerance. We must speak out about crimes against us but not against other religions... after all, it's not God's fault that some people choose to be ignorant and violent.

A man is ALSO known by the company he keeps. It would have been ideal (in my opinion) if Shri Tharoor was in the BJP and offering good advice about the type of Hinduism that the party should promote. I believe, Modi & Co. may have erred in their ACTIONS but not in their INTENTIONS so far as demonetisation and GST is concerned. Just the way Nehru's brand of socialistic ideas and his foreign policies were perhaps well intended but turned out dismal for the country, Modi's also was well intended but perhaps deleterious without the intent to be so.Where they have ERRED IN THEIR ACTIONS is in the type of approaches they followed after the results of various by-elections that were held at various times in the recent past. It showed they also have feet of clay. Tharoor would have been more convincing if he was not with the Congress Party, or rather, if the Congress Party was genuinely democratic in its structure and function and did not promote nepotism and privilege.

If there is a major take away I got from watching this interview, it was that the interviewer was definitely NOT keen on interviewing someone HE didn’t think was a good Hindu. The interviewer came across as stiff, rather rude and intolerant. Shashi as usual articulated very well. People may not like him, but have to agree India has never had a minister who speaks as well as he does. The difference between crass, rude & uneducated other people in power and good education, exposure and etiquette.
