The old gray echo's just never die, that actually may be the same model that my dad has, tons of hours on it. The engine to shaft mounting bushings are worn and leak some oil it seems.

Between you and the Chickanic, I pay more attention to Echo than I did in the past. In the old days, I thought of them as all about the same garbage. Craftsman, HomeLite, WeedEater, Echo, all about the same and below Stihl. Now I know Echo is equal to or above the Stihl . Excellent video!

IHG, your detail on Tuning the carburetor is absolutely amazing. Like, that's one thing i struggle with to this day, just getting that methodology in my head of which screw does what has been a struggle for me all these years, and i appreciate the detail and thought-out process you use!
I would LOVE to have one of these old gray echo's if i could find one in my area in WV. i've always heard great things about them, but sadly, never had the opportunity to get one. I did get an old Echo "Gray" handheld blower i need to fix in a "lot" i bought last year, but haven't got around to it yet. Thank you sir!

I have a newer orange Echo trimmer that is around 5 years old or so now. I have been VERY happy with it. I would really like to come across one of these old grey ones, because if the modern one is good, I am sure the older one would be even better. Same goes for the blower.
you are correct, the older grey lineup is just as good If not better in some ways compared to the newer stuff.
Only reason I don't always use a cheap aftermarket carb is they don't always work as good as OEM; sometimes the fuel adjusters don't work right and they usually don't stay trouble-free as long as OEM for me, but it depends on the situation.

This is a nice trimmer. Being a bit older, the parts are somewhat less expensive (air filters, carburetors, etc.) and still available. Once the inexpensive parts supply dries up, then it's economic benefits will cease. I agree with your cleaning practices; the old dirt, grease, oil over everything does eventually cause issues such as cracks in the wiring insulation, overheating, difficulty in inspection, excessive wear, and generally a mess to handle the tool without getting yourself all filthy. As an aerospace engineer, I always like to work with clean surfaces, there are just so many reasons... we call dirt, grease, grime, etc. FOD or Foreign Object Debris that can cause FOD or Foreign Object Damage. Sure, a trimmer is not an aircraft, but to get the best economic benefit out of it, keeping it clean will ensure a longer life and better value. Got a used SRM2601 10, 12 years ago. Absolutely love it, and it still has an EPA carb on it. I'm going to put an non EPA carb on it this year.

MNce job!! I have had the exact same unit for many, many years and it still runs great. I always set the carb screws to 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 turns out to begin fine tuning.

i have an old ECHO SRM 2010 in orange, same engine as that one just a different carb setup with one that does not have a primer bulb, it uses the choke to draw fuel into the carb until it tries to start.
its about 20 years old and still works great, ive even used it on a small brush clearing job along with my mculloch CABRIO 300. both are superb machines

I once found a machine with a similar paint chip. But the previous owner had matched the color and repainted it. I kept that one because it's original owner loved it. It is an Echo PE 2400 edger. Wonderful machine.
I think you made a great choice in keeping it.
I still have one just like that i need a ignition coil for it. It was found in the garbage with a new OEM carburetor still in the bag taped to the handle. 15 minutes after i got it home i had it running and it had the brush blade conversion kit on it

I just recently rehab'ed an Echo 200 R and and Echo 2000, both of which are the gray models and both had been sitting for a few seasons. Really easy to work on, both needed new fuel lines, carbs and spark plugs. One had a lawnmower plug and the other had an I-dunno-what plug. Both fired right up and it made the owners happy that they had their old trimmers working like new again. I wish I could say the same for TroyBilt trimmers....ugghhh!!

When I run across that situation in the shop where the customer tried repairing the unit themselves, I always start with one turn out on the L & H screws, and tune from that point. That seems to work well.

Really great job on tuning this time! After watching all your videos for over a year I can say that was the easiest to understand and most straightforward tuning so far.
One thing I’ve started doing recently that worked out perfectly for me is this. Although I still record initial carb settings, if I think they’re off I simply change them to more standard settings once I’ve cleaned and rebuilt the carb. I feel that the settings that appear to be way off are more than likely because someone was compensating for diaphragms going bad over time. My theory seems to be correct so far - on my most recent chainsaw I reset both screws to 1.25 turns out and the engine started up and ran on the first pull, even though I let it idle for a few moments and then opened up the choke. Idled, throttled up and ran perfectly! After that the only thing I did was use my tach to set idle and high speeds to spec and it ran just fine. I suspect I could have put the initial settings at 1.5 each and done just fine as well.
yes you are correct, wrong setting from the start, can make tuning much harder. I probably should have reset them to 1.5 turns on this one, but if I had, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to show people how to tune it. So it worked out well for everyone. thanks again!
I found an old echo trimmer at a yard sale for $25. It was my first time ever seeing this brand. Even though it looked aged, it looked durable at the same time. I was instantly impressed when the guy fired it right up after a few primes and pointed out the job he done on his yard. He told me it’s a great machine with a lifetime warranty on parts!? (Is that true??) After watching this video you made me a Master Echo Tech I 😂 but seriously I did exactly what you said to do and it runs awesome!!! Like it should!! I have one complaint though, my head isn’t the instant feed type. I cut off two 6-7 inch pieces and insert one on each side. I’m sure I can change that out myself.. #greatvid #echogod

I always try to clean the carbs first but if it still doesn't want to work I don't waste more time on it. Most of the time there's a very reasonably priced replacement available.

i personally only go for the stihl.thanks foe showing the tuning as i now know how to tune my stihl fs 55 because it was bogging down from idol to full speed

Nice work on this one. I have the same unit that I found at the curb and I did purchase the new carb/tune up kit. Runs great. My only issue with this unit is that the trimmer head runs counterclockwise, which I cannot get used to. Seems all the debris ends up on my shoes.
most if not all commercial/straight-shaft weedwackers spin this way, its better when trimming certain areas like beds and such to fling the trimmings towards yourself to make less mess. I usually am walking backwards trimming/edging though.

Hey bro what's up? This type of trimmers works very good and they have a high resale value in the Caribbean. I like these trimmers and Stihl products a lot. Only problem for us here is getting replacement parts and the cost to repair our equipment.

Them gray echos just seem to be invincible. I have a echo PE 200 edger and after rebuilding the engine from GT200r parts it still runs great.

I have a Echo gt225 always ran great shut off other day won't restart. Put on new carb, plug and coil won't start about ready to give up.. nice job on your video 9/9/23

you are correct about the When and while. The "when" are generalized as quick stabs at the trigger and letting go of it. This will let you know if the L screw needs to be adjusted. The "While" is generalized as a long hold of the trigger and that's when you make your adjustments to the H screw.
I just got one of these trimmer given to me. My buddy went to battery equipment and said... I have a older weed eater, do you want it? He described it to me and I got all giddy and said ummm yeah. Brought it home put a filter and new lines and it fired right up. I was happy a a fat kid getting a piece of cake😆😆😆. Marry Christmas and Happy New year 🎉🎉🎉🎉

I've been using an older grey Echo like this for the past 10 years and it just keeps going. I freshen the carb parts every year, keep the spark arrestor burned clean and that thing just keeps running perfect year after year. I mow an acre that we live on with about 600ft of wooden fence, 3 outbuildings and numerous trees and other edges. I only use non-ethanol fuel and use Stihl oil in the mix. My son gave me a orange Echo the other day because he couldnt keep it running. Still working on that one because there are no "open" carb adjust screws - going to have to uncap the high speed screw and dig out the low speed screw. I just would not have a newer weed eater while my dependable grey one is working so good.

I would definitely get one of these and use it. My neighbor has an srm2100 and l fixed it a couple of years ago, and it runs like a top. What model is this one? Are you going to keep this trimmer or sell it? If you are going to keep it, I would HIGHLY recommend an echo speed-feed 400 head for it. I have had one on my trimmer for 2.5 years and it is way easier to fill with line compared to the old echo head. Love the vids on echo equipment!!

Great video. I have a couple of grey echos and two orange echos, it looks like you hit all of the main points of getting these running. They are easy to work on, but the one thing that I dread is replacing the fuel tank grommet…do you have a trick to make that task easier?
sure, lubricate it, and don't be afraid to use the dullest tool you have.

I wish I would have watched this video before I just replaced the fuel line kit and air filter. My SRM 2100 was purchased exactly 30 years ago (April 1993) and it is like new condition. No rust or damage and still has the original spark plug. These trimers were $229 and were meant to be used by a commercial lawn care companies. So, for me just being a homeowner with lots of trimming to do but only put 1 to 2 gallons of 2 cycle gas a year through the Echo. Does Echo still make them like this anymore?
no unfortunately they don't
I've run Stihl, Husky and Echo and when I got my own it was the Echo. Dollar for dollar for the same performance the Echo was the better buy. Sure, the Stihl and Husky were GOOD trimmers but the Echo would do the same work, had the same quality and would start and run just as good and just as long as the others for cheaper investment. I still have an 85 Stihl blower and a 250 Echo blower. The Stihl has the vacuum and the Echo can be used as it is. I got NO growls for either and they all have their places. I could get a vacuum for the Echo but I like having a spare. I have 7 mowers, my SWeetie and I both now have battery trimmers and a blower apiece but that's my domain. Thanks and BLESSINGS!

I’d run the H screw out another 1/2 to 3/4 then hold it at full throttle and slowly run the screw back in until it starts to run “clean” and rev. Also, that trimmer head needs greasing thru the bolt/screw in the gearbox body. I could hear it was dry.

i have an echo SRM 211 model similar to this one, i remember the instructions said that i had to add a bit of oil in the spark plug hole and pull on the starter rope a few times, just wondering if this is correct or not
you never mentioned the reason to do that, but if I recall that might have been in the instruction
for long term storage. you can still look the owners manual up for it and find it if you wanted to confirm it.

I have the same model number trimmer but with the carb that has the plastic caps on the adjustment screws. (SRM 2100 1E, serial # 619977) It is VERY hard to start, runs great after warmed up.
Do you follow the same instructions for adjusting low & and Hi range ? TIA
Thank you for the model and serial number, it made it much easier to see what your trimmer looked like. Unfortunately, adjusting the fuel screw, mainly affects the running, of the machine and has some affect on the starting, but a full carb clean and service would be more effective IMO. Otherwise must replace the carb, which is much easier.

I’ve also heard that it’s better to rebuild because of the superior build quality of an original name brand carburetor.
The tru fuel I use I notice it makes the exhaust nasty and full of grimy black crap it been running crappy today it kinda wants to shut off after I let off the throttle what you think it could be ?
when switching to tru fuel sometimes you need to make adjustments to the fuel adjustment screws same for your car, so if you want to, try switching back to mixing your own fuel
The ignition coil is bad and they are discontinued. Will the new coils for the srm2100 work?

I have a an srm 3100 that has been on my tools almost 20 years and with a recent carb change it’s not running great anymore and it seems that I can’t get it to run right , it stays on only with choke all the way close and as soon as I open it dies , Boggs a lot and have no power . Hard to get the right setting this time
sure, first off did you confirm that the gasket between the carb and the engine was still there? During swaps, the gasket will stay with the old carb. If so, then you might have to adjust the carb to work with the engine.
I have an SRM-2100 I just picked up on the cheap. Went through what felt like the full spectrum of maintenance. (replaced fuel and air filter, fuel lines, carburetor, spark plug, spark arrestor, greased the drive line). It idles and picks up throttle a bit, but the head won't turn and it never "signs" like a 2 stroke should. I don't have an RPM gauge, but I don't believe it's running at the intended RPM's on WOT. What else should I be looking at?
I would check on the clutch and also take out the spark arrestor screen to see if it's clogged.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Thanks for the reply! I did clean the spark arrestor, looked to be in fairly good shape. I had it apart at the clutch. What should I be looking for? It runs more like it should without the trimmer head on. It seems the trimmer head is locking up against the adapter plate putting a very high load on the engine. Shouldn't the head spin freely when attached to the trimmer (not powered on)?

no I only buy online right now. It's easy, I don't even have to leave the house. I use Amazon.
I have that very same Echo trimmer The pull rope does not budge at all. Even with the spark plug removed, the pull rope wtill does not budge. Any ideas?
sure, put some ATF or some kind of lube into the spark plug hole, let it sit, take off the recoil and then turn the engine by the bolt in the middle of the starter cup
What kinda of 2 cycle oil do you use?
I use cheap stuff, it's BlackMax synthetic 2 stroke, but any decent brand will do. Just make sure you use good gasoline and mix it correctly

I have an echo gtr model and I have carb problem I rebuilt the original carb but it would big down . so I ordered one from Amazon ,this echo trimmer use the zamma. I put in a new spark plug and fuel and air fillter. And it runs rough . the air filter housing is covered by fuel. I took the muffler and the spark arrest her screen is clear as a possible that my fuel vent is plugged in as causing the fuel to spill out in the air filter housing?
I would look at the carb as the issue. Unfortunately when buying a new aftermarket carb, to put on a used engine, sometimes you'll have to adjust the carb, to work with the engine. Unfortunately the adjustments screws are kind of hard to find as they might be hidden.

I put a coil and primer bulb on a SRM 2400 for a friend and he comes back 2 days later saying the coil is bad. I tested it and it wasn't sparking. I ended up having to reset gap as if it had been moved(1 leg gapped too far). I then couldn't get any fuel to the cylinder and got a new Chinese carb. It doesn't seem to want to draw fuel and will not start with fuel sprayed into throat. Feels like it has compression but not sure if compression gage could verify on these engines. The customer said he had mixed gas, marvel mystery oil, and seafoam for a mix after he used all my mixed gas that I had put in it. I'm wondering if he burnt the rings up but don't want to disassemble the engine as he doesn't want to spend anymore $

sure, I would confirm with a compression tester, and also a visual check thru the exhaust port as to the condition of the piston ring(s). Were they using it with string or a blade? I'm wondering if they hit something really hard, it sheared the key on the flywheel. that would shift timing and cause it to not start

I need help. I have an old ECHO PE2400 Edger Serial Number 010178 and I am searching for a new carburetor. I have tried two from Amazon that say they will work but they do not match my existing carb. I have messaged a couple other vendors on Amazon to ask if their units will fit my model and they reply that they will not. I don't want to have to go to Echo directly because the price will be very high. Given the problems that I have had finding a complete carb, I don't really trust ordering a repair kit either. Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement carb for the early model PE2400? Thanks in advance for any help.

I would have started off buy checking spark then work on replacing gas lines Instead of dumping gas right in there bc these echos are known for bad fuel line and aftermarket carbs are the way to go that is what I would do

The new echos having oil issues on burning its a crab issues echo , The new fix for it is the 2023T was the fix with a new carb design So they say .. Beware of the newer orange echo SRM225 for that oil leaking mess .. THE OLDER SRM230 model was and still is their best model ! they came in Gray that was Echo higher end professional level trimmer back then that listed for like 300 plus ! ...

What I usually do is the following:
How old is the trimmer.
How much I am spending in parts to fix it. Is it worth it then fix it!
If not time to let it go and buy a new one.
Of course you need to know what you are doing
