  • I put the Propulsion Spirit 1.0 Plus through some testing on our tender and find it to be a game changer. I was pretty happy with initial testing but as I worked things out, I was left stunned.

    Looks like a great choice for a tender. In theory the hull speed of your 2.5m tender is 3.84knots. By moving further forward you are increasing the effective waterline length and getting rid of that wedge shape digging in at the back.
    Now lets all imagine scaling this up to your yacht with the ePropulsion POD Drive 6.0 Evo Motor. This is the dream for my boat. No more stinky diesel. No oil, fuel, water filters. No fan belts and alternators, no stern glands to leak, shaft gone! One less water inlet to sink the boat. 2-3 cubic meters or internal space returned to your boat (like upgrading to a 38fter) with the engine and drive shaft assembly taken out and a flat floor placed over low profile batteries. No more $750+ services!

      Hi Phil, I'm definitely a fan of electric propulsion and when my Nanni dies I will more than likely go electric. I can't see that it would be too much of an installation problem going from sail drive to pod as it would sit in the same spot. The price of 48V batteries is slowly falling so that will make it even more accessible.

    we would consider this application as a ship-to-shore use case. But we aslo believe more advancements are coming quickly to make electric outboards more powerful and more affordable! thanks for the video!

      Yes I think they will continue to evolve and the sooner the better! Thanks for watching.

    Great review, thanks! With your boat at 2.5m you have a theoretical hull speed of 3.8kts, so the 5.6 it’s you managed shows that this thing has a lot of torque. It’s really interesting that you got more speed when you flattened out the boat.

    • @sailingelleray
      @sailingelleray  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes it's all about the torque with this outboard. at 48v and with a big prop it really does get the boat moving. A lot of people laugh at the 3hp petrol comparison and that's fair enough if you don't take the torque into consideration. I have to say that flattening out the boat was a happy accident but it has continued to prove itself as the way to extract all the speed out of the Epropulsion. Thanks for watching!

    As soon as the bow started to rise I knew you had a trim problem, moving a little weight makes a huge difference. You can try adjusting the trim angle of the motor but there just isn't enough power to lift the back of the boat to level it out thereby adjusting the trim using thrust. I learned this 40 years ago with my 2 hp. Evinrude that I used on my 14 foot sailboat. We were at a cottage that had an 12 foot aluminum row boat. I wanted to go fishing a 1/4 mile away and it rowed like the anchor was dragging so I got my outboard. It moved along pretty good but just like what happened to you, the bow rose and it was more of a plow than a boat! During this I had an epiphany........what if I just move to the middle seat and use an oar to bump the tiller to steer......

    • @sailingelleray
      @sailingelleray  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I worked with the trim angle but as you say, there wasn't enough to get the boat up onto the plane so playing with the boat trim was my only option. Flattening the boat out and employing both buoyancy and increased waterline really worked well. I might need to employ your oar trick on the tiller though! Thanks for watching and for your comments.😀

      @@sailingelleray Because I used my 2hp on my sailboat I tightened the tiller so the motor would stay put and not turn left or right. You can also make some kind of tiller extension.

    Like Ali, inflatable also have variant speed hulls, incl catamaran, with open front to easily get on from swim, dive. Love the concept, noise, smell, maint, if I was going E, spirit is the "current" best bang for buck. However, equivalent to only 3hp petrol is insufficient for many conditions. Plus $3.8k vs 6hp petrol for less than 1/2 that.
    Like when we had mobile phones the size of a shoe, very expensive call charges mainly suitable for business, the tech isn't there for many of us yet.

      Thanks for your comments. I’ve driven some very quick RHIB but unfortunately most small tenders are pretty slow. The new cat one looks interesting. If you get a crack in one please let me know how it goes. Yes technology will advance and I’m excited to see where it will go. Even despite the entry price, for my purposes, I would never consider going back to a petrol outboard. This thing has really impressed me.

      @@sailingelleray I have an Aircat 335, 35kg, 500kg load, $1.4k. With 5hp Parsuns, 24kg, $1.3k.
      Cuts well, more stable, less draft vs v, open front = less nose/weight, handles surf & tow well, doesn't dive, no trip hazard, easy out/in, incl dogs, won't turn into a bath tub.
      Has firm drop-stich floor like inflatable stand up paddle boards, which I can use as one. 17" tubes, folds into a large travel backpack if required, which it came with, store in locker. Great for monohulls without davits.

      PS. if I was single without dogs, I'd likely get an inflatable kayak with emotor. Much lighter, smaller cheaper motor, much easier to handle & store.

      @@sailingelleray I am waiting for next year when the new battery cell technology comes out with more power per kg. It is an extension of the very safe Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells with Manganese added. It looks like it will be just as safe and have a 15-20% increase in overall power. There is a lot to look forward to.

    Nice video thanks. I'm considering one for my Tobin 3 metre inflatable which will be more sluggish than your Quintrex. . How have you found after sales support in Australia? We are based on the Sunshine Coast.

    • @sailingelleray
      @sailingelleray  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching! I haven't looked for after sales support as yet but what I did find was that Epropulsion Australia was really (like really really) good. Shipping was ultra fast and changing my order was no problem. Should i have any issues, I'll probably contact them first but there are also several independent dealers near where my boat is in Sydney. I cannot be happier with the Epropulsion but if there was one thing I could change it would be a shortened (or extendable) throttle lever. It's just a little long for my small tender. All the best, Tony.
