  • A spectacular morning at Haulover with promising waves but the day turned into relatively calm seas with beautiful water, not a lot of mischief at the inlet.

    I will admit, most of this vid is just filler to get to what I think is an incredible shot of the sailfish captain working the following seas.

    Great work. The Sailfish Capt. gave his guests a nice smooth and dry ride in. Thanks for highlighting his work!

    • @Jkur2009
      @Jkur2009 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well, yes. He did. But smooth and dry isn’t what he was trying to achieve. What he was doing was something way more important... he was preventing the boat from broaching which can be catastrophic and result swamping, capsizing, and sinking the boat. You are supposed to stay on the back of the wave in front of you and not overtake it.

    • @sv2296
      @sv2296 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lzvagias just a question. So he was controling the boat perfect so the wave behind him does capsize him. It seem like he was hitting the throttle alot. If he had one engine would it of been enough to pull him out. Or in situations like that you need two engines?

    • @Jkur2009
      @Jkur2009 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      S v power isn’t really an issue because you usually only need to go about 10-15 mph at the most. So a single motor works fine if the boat can plane off with a single. If it’s a twin engine boat that can’t plane without both motors your still probably not going to have a problem unless the seas are huge. Then you may encounter a problem.

    • @Jkur2009
      @Jkur2009 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      S v this demonstrates what happens in a broach. This scenario involves being overtaken by a wave which is far less violent than when you are overtaking waves (running faster than the seas in front of you) but the end result is the same. The issue is that the water particles at the top of a wave move up and forward while the particles at the bottom of the wave are moving backwards. A boat hull spans across both parts of the wave which is ok as long as the boat’s centerline stays perfectly aligned with the direction of the sea but it doesn’t take much to stray slightly and that causes the stern to pitch forward and the bow to dig and veer off in the trough and go backwards. If you’re lucky the boat just leans over and veers off course and then rights itself as the wave passes. If you’re unlucky it will roll far enough to capsize or swamp.

    The sailfish Capt. at the end worked that wave perfect. It real easy to have a following sea wash right over the transom and can and will sink a boat that small. Not so much now days but back 20-30 yrs. when a lot of open fisherman boats had an open transom more than a few were sunk by inexperienced operators.

    Yup Sailfish guy handled the rollers just right. As a veteran of this inlet I can offer a tip for those days when the rollers are in the inlet. Hug the north jetty. Not so you're at risk of hitting the rocks, but if you're in a smaller boat like the Sailfish or the little Whaler then run about 18-20 feet off the jetty and you will find a smooth path most times. However there are times like when the Sailfish went through the rollers stretch the entire width of the inlet so when they are that big it's best to stay away from the jetty in case you get turned sideways in the trough.

      fyi, probably no parking on south side of inlet right now, they are working on the bridge. you can park at the Ritz Carlton on south side or park at Haulover beach park on north side. On south side there are no beach amenities, no bath, no showers, etc...(unless you are using the Ritz facilities.) and if you are so inclined... the north end of Haulover is a nude beach. :)

    Sailfish captain handled that very well. Only thing different I would have done was making my passengers put those life jackets on before making that inlet run.

    with the sailfish--is he slowing his speeds or adjusting trim or what--I want to know how to do that--been there once and I nosed it down coming out at the end (kind of like he did) but looks like he had the power to bowrise the boat out of it. Any serious Captain replies would be great!

    LOL at the Pershing about a minute in. Not only does the weather not bother him. But it's gotta make all the loud little speedboat drivers feel a little salty that that mega yacht would outrun them at full throttle too.

    Is this supposed to be a rough inlet or just one that has a good amount of boat traffic?

      Haulover can go from lazy river to white water rapids in mere seconds. but its the fastest route to deep water ans am almost straight shot to Bimini.
