both made in the same era with similar instruments and audio technology i think. xtal already was a super mid 90's sounding song in my opinion so this kinda makes it feel full circle in a way
This is the secret ending theme where you have Luigi, and have all the stars that open up after you get him, and it’s just Mario, walking off into the snow on a new adventure away from the mushroom kingdom, and it’s bittersweet, because Bowser, just let’s him on his way.
After spending an evening playing Mario Party and Mario Odyssey with my 3 year old son, watching him get the Mario bug, this is like a fine whiskey for a proud dad to sip on. Thanks on4word.
Funny enough a very similar video to this was what originally got me into Aphex Twin. In the first year of Siivagunner, they uploaded a rendition of Xtal using the Dire Dire Docks soundfont and I loved it. Happy to see similar stuff like it since I feel the SM64 soundfont lends itself well to Aphex Twin tracks
The video was called "Dire, Dire Docks - Super Mario 64 DS" on the Siivagunner channel. I'd put the link here but I don't want TH-cam deleting the comment
Is it this video? Dire, Dire Docks - Super Mario 64 DS th-cam.com/video/BmcmBzn3Vj4/w-d-xo.html Why would TH-cam delete the comment if you posted the link? I feel it's relevant to the video and conversation since we're talking about different Super Mario 64 versions of Xtal, which by the way, I just stumbled into both versions today, and the fact that this is even a thing put a big dumb smile on my face and made my day!
Thanks to this remix you can hear a lot of the South American influence in the original beat especially around the minute mark. Perhaps Xtal was one of the first tropical house songs, and the production hid this aspect. I think SAW 85-92's best attribute is that each song has a distinct mood and atmosphere, Ptolemy in the SM64 soundfont would sound completely different from this, same with Green Calx or Heliosphan.
@@joshshrum2764 Would say there isn't a correlation, but you're exactly right in every part of your reply. I hate my job, but at least it pays well. The sounds are very well curated and chosen, I can tell a lot of work was put into this, amidst the variety of usually copy and paste lifeless midi covers out there yours stand out as very well cared for. Thank you a ton for these videos, would love to hear more, and maybe some original songs too.
The original song hold a special place in my heart. During that time I had discovered Aphex Twin, I was going through one of the hardest times of my life. This cover though, has me tearing up as sm64 was one of the fondest moments of my childhood. Thank you for making this and I look forward to hearing more of your work
never knew this was such a good pairing. Super mario 64 almost dream like atmosphere along with Aphex Twins also dreamy and ethereal music is such a good combo
you combined two kinds of nostalgia for me. listening to aphex twin playing monkey ball while sipping sun kist. and mario 64. amazing work. instant sub
damn i remember doing this as a rip for siivagunner. you did it like 1000x better, i did it when i had less experience with music arrangement/theory and i was like 15 or 14. thank you for this genuinely
I love covers like this cause it shows the pure beauty behind Aphex Twin’s music and each note in his songs. Even in Super Mario 64 this songs sounds just as beautiful.
This electric piano timbre from SM64 fits well into most songs but especially sounds nice in Xtal. 👍🎹 Btw, do you copy these songs by ear or use existing midi files?
out of all videos I've seen discussing mario 64, I haven't seen one that explains how was this game able to achieve this unique indescribable vibe. it makes me happy every time I come back to it
It’s nostalgia, these games had a big effect on us as children, hearing these sounds again is like time travelling back to that feeling of being children again. Someone who’s never played video games probably wouldn’t get the same vibe from the sounds. Mario 64 music is objectively so well written and timeless but the sounds are pure nostalgia.
This soundfont is the most nostalgic of all time for me. I only started listening to Aphex Twin about a year ago but now it sounds like I've known of him all of my life. I'd cite specifically the Mario 64 File Select song as the song that brings back the most nostalgic memories. Listening to that one has a slideshow of images and videos of my childhood playing in my brain. The original Minecraft soundtrack for a little further into my childhood. Also - near the end of my childhood (16, 17, debatably no longer childhood) is when I discovered Radiohead which was the band that lead to my discovery of actual music and listening to albums, rather than just whatever played on classic rock radio stations or on the monstercat 24/7 twitch stream I would do homework to.
This makes me want to cry. I don’t know why. I’ve never played Mario 64, so obviously not much nostalgia for the game. I’ve maybe listened through this Aphex Twin album like five times throughout my life. I have no intense connection to anything here, so why is it making me so emotional? Help.
Imagine, before you'd seen any of these videos, someone told you that you were going to listen to covers of AFX, RH and BoC and that you'd think they were fucking amazing. I'd wager most would have called bullshit, with me being chief amongst them. It really is stunning work. A relatively niche meeting of worlds that capture a specific part of the zeitgeist from the past 20-30 years. And you know for sure RDJ has himself checked at least one out. Thank you for this very special bit of the internet, my man.
on4word man thank you for all your remixes bro, this one and your aisatsana one are my favorite. Its genuinely just really beautiful and I appreciate your hard work to bring this to life
Man I'm so glad your In Rainbows cover album went viral, cos it meant I discovered you. I wish I could do the things you do, I've wanted to try making chip tune songs, cos I'm a musician and songwriter (but I'm all analogue, never tried making electronic music cos I don't know how). I just don't know where to start, I can't afford a macbook. But this is just such a great channel, your covers are just brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Thank you for making them. Aphex Twin seems the most appropriate musician to cover with video game sound effects too, considering he uses video game sounds in his tracks already. His Pac Man song is perhaps my favourite song of his that he's ever made, and it's made entirely of sound effects from the arcade game. I really wish Namco would license it and use it in a game, one of their endless compilations of Pacman games or a general list of Namco games that always contains a Pacman game or two in them (though it never includes the best Pacman game, Ms Pacman, cos that was an unofficial romhack essentially, they didn't make it) The n64 sound font is just really appropriate for these songs, they seem to fit aphex twin and radiohead perfectly
i could imagine an IZ-US n64 cover starting with "it's a me, mario!" instead of "stop making that big face!"
That would be perfect
that or toad screaming from mk64
He just released exactly this!
Well guess what

It's incredible how classic IDM music goes well with Mario 64.

tryna be like you, mario games are incredible games to show children. they teach you so much without even realizing it, especially to a small kid.

Definitely some melancholy but something wholesome too

Moist and also malleable
Aphex Twin has full of music like it. It's great. It's lovely.

Pretty sure the drums in Xtal come from Apache-not sure of any South American connection
