My grandson learned 'woodworking' at school. I gave him my favourite tool of all time - a card scraper. After showing him how to fettle one, as my cabinet-making father had taught me. At school, his 'tutor' had no idea what it was.
just from the sound you can tell how beautifully sharp his scraper is; if only i could get mine that sharp! it's certainly harder to sharpen than a plane blade!
Best thing I ever bought - 40 years ago - was a quality burnisher. Just don't rely on handy bits of hard steel - turn down your scraper edges with a decent tool.
the issue with the card, is that you can flex and cave it, giving you uneven dips in what would otherwise be a nigh-perfectly flat surface. the tear out can also be handled nicely by planing much much slower, it comes from speed, remove the speed, the wood fibres can be cut without being pinched or pulled by the surrounding fibres, which is what often (primarily) causes tear out in a knot.
Pura vida Paul and guys that's true when you work with hand tools you learn môre about strategy than with only power tools for me work with hand tools is a great complement beside power tools and also you coul do exercise sometimes with hand tools 😮😮❤❤.pura vida Paul to show us how beautiful is work with hand tools in a world with only fast work matter 😢
I am still learning about sharpening and my best guide has been Mr Paul. It is extremely obvious he's mastered the sharpening. I also certainly appreciate the countless techniques that I have learned from this wonderful master. Muchas gracias pues.
I think I have a hard decade of doing and learning ahead. I currently can not get my chisels, irons or scrapers close to the sharpness and efficiency of your tools. I truly believe you could spend 3 hours just describing the sharpening of all your edges.
Forgive my millennial frame of analogy but if woodworking was something like a video game, watching Paul Sellers work so effortlessly reminds me of a character you have maxed out to level 100. He's acquired and mastered all of the special abilities and tools. Ive watched hundreds of videos related to woodworking but I put Sellers at the top of my echelon of trustworthy sources
Yeah, but its really really bothersome to scrape at worse cases 3-4mm of material away just got it dimensioned properly. Maybe scrap the peace and get another peace to replace it, but in some projects you cant since its about the grain pattern needing to be similar enough.
Me. Sellers. I’m still working on properly preparing my scrapers. I’ve tried to do exactly what you do in your videos. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong
A cabinet scraper, yep that’s lacking in my life… why burn those thumbs if a tool can hold the scraper for you. My wife wil totally understand the need for this tool :-P
I’ve bought 6 guns for my wife now and she didn’t like or couldn’t lift 1. But my collection is looking sweeeet ,Well sadly the hunt for the right one continues she’ll never know the sacrifices I make for her… wonder if she would like an AR-10🧐
Paul just casually gets perfect shavings with plane, scraper plane, and card scraper. I am happy when I don’t get dust from my scrapers.
Sharpen them!
Paul is a true gem. An actual example of “forgotten more than you know” wisdom.

just love how effortless and gentle he is with his tools and technique. never realised how aggressive i get when working lol
I need to sharpen my scraper

@@Mycologist I think it got easier for me when I tried using a carbide rod to burnish the edge instead of an old screwdriver
I was going to say, it's not really sharpening, but more of putting a tiny bur on both edges of the scraper

As mentioned above, the BUR EDGE is the goal of the clean surface 👌
Just when you think he’s done, he comes in with the perfectly sharp scraper 😅

Thanks for passing on your knowledge!
Such a good reminder to strategize and take advantage of the strength of various tools

Great info Paul! Card scrapers are a under utilized tool. Very cheap...very effective.
Brilliant. I might invest in scrapers. I have no luck at all with planes
Strategy yes, but also very sharp tools!
Pauls camera stability is always so perfect.
From my side you still have 😮
Great advice! Thanks Paul!!
When I first used a card scraper as a child, I was utterly fascinated at how smooth you could make a piece, with such a simple tool.

Ooooh. Just what I needed. I always have a problem with tear out. Thanks!
I was impressed with how much meat that card scraper took off per swipe!👍🙃
When Strategy means to use the right tool at the right time...ok.
Great vid. Thanks for the tips!

That card seems to be crazy sharp and almost like you don’t even need to use anything other than the card scraper for this
Great tip!
Very cool share. Thank you.
Thank you teacher gabinete scrapers got it
I have a very old Stanley No.80 but no blade. What brand would people recommend for replacement blades since i can no longer get an original
I really want to get out of my factory job and do this full time

How do you strategize that big divot you just put in that edge??
My cabinet and card scrapers produce sawdust. My sharpening skills sucks.
Your voice reminds me of Tony Robinson
Right? My thought exactly, when I first heard him years ago.🙂
@@Ivanhoe52Baldrick had a cunning plan.
Mr.Sellers has several strategies.
Completely different.😅😅😅

Until now I thought a cabinet scraper and a card scraper were the same thing...
Unless you are working with cheap pine. 😢
I clearly can't sharpen my tools properly when looking at those wood shavings...
Why not just sand the rough spots
