The area, known for its hilly terrain and tea plantations, was severely affected as the landslide buried homes, roads, and agricultural lands under tons of mud and debris.
Rescue operations were challenging due to the continuous rain and difficult terrain. The disaster highlighted the vulnerability of the Western Ghats region to such events, particularly in the context of changing weather patterns and deforestation. The Puthumala landslide was one of several that occurred in Kerala during the 2019 monsoon season, which was marked by unprecedented rainfall and widespread flooding across the state.
The incident led to discussions about the need for better disaster management and sustainable development practices in ecologically sensitive areas.
