I got so excited when I first heard the piano here, when I watched the video for this show for the first time, but then I was like, "Wait, can Greg do David's vocals for this one?" Greg has an absolutely phenomenal voice, but, just like most of their songs with Dave as lead, it's an incredibly hard song to sing, especially if you don't have a super deep singing voice to begin with. Greg's voice can get pretty deep, but whenever he makes his voice deeper, like when he sings parts of the verses for Africa, it usually loses much of its volume. Then it turned out to just be an intro for Simon's drum solo and I was like, "Oh. Yeah this makes more sense." Still would love to hear another live version of Hydra though! I think it's one of their most interesting songs for sure, lyrically, vocally, and musically (Lukather's tone and playing on the studio version is so goddamn gorgeous. I mean, it always is, to be honest, but for this song it's extra beautiful). Dave's ideas for ad-libbing and vocal filler have always been so weird but so incredibly good at the same time? Like during this song, when he goes, "Shoo doo doo doo, shoo doo doo doo, shu duh duh duh duh duh duh doo," or during All Us Boys, and a couple other songs, where he goes, "Mau mau mau mau mau mau mau mau mau mau mau mau mau mau!" It should sound absolutely absurd, but because it's David, it sounds cool. He's always had this wonderful way of twisting words when he sings them, stretching them, bending them, drastically changing the pronunciation (like the way he pronounces the word "angels" on All Us Boys), singing in an accent different than his own, stuff like that. It's one of my favorite things about him, one of the things that makes him so damn unique and special. I miss him so much! 😭😭😭
