    As a person that only watches the TH-cam videos of your content. I myself and probably others don’t have the time to watch a stream. That’s why I listen to the content at work. Plus it seems more eventful watching the videos than a live stream.

      Same, I watch these videos like a podcast. I think Destiny would destroy the competition if he started a podcast. I went from Rogan, to Lex, to Destiny / a bunch of other TH-cam / podcasters. The reason I don't watch the stream is because I don't care about his stupid drama shit. This was actually very interesting.

    I think I agree with Dan's position about YT being bad about streaming even though I think the point he made was bad. YT has a bright red circle around the channel avatar when they are live, and are always top when viewing subscriptions tab. Which means I can find streams in my subscriptions, and discovering new channels will show the stream too.

    "brand risk" has always seemed like an advertising term for companies that care more about other things than just getting enough about just getting eyeballs on their product. Its such a boardroom thing to say "omg, our Ford vehicle is on the news being driven by a potential murderer this is going to tank our brand" or "oh no, our content is appearing alongside controversial content or TOS breaking content where some guy talks about current events" but it's also appearing on news segments where they show children being gas attacked or something. Basically they are just looking to prevent a bud light syle backlash but their idea about what causes it has such a hair trigger that they don't actually understand what even happened let alone how to prevent it

      Yes, plenty of companies have made whole advertisements, and shoved it down our throats, but BUDLIGHT didn’t shove anything down our throats, conservatives shoved one sponsorship down our throats because it was made by one of the most obnoxious, hopefully inadvertently offensive, most caricatural person ever.
      Now arguably conservatives did that because eventually it was going to happen and that sponsorship was just the beginning, and that’s probably fair, but it doesn’t change the fact that budlight didn’t shove anything down our throats.

    Long standing brands should NOT even speak on political/ social issues. This is why it was considered standard to not even bring up religion or politics in everyday conversation, up until the 2010s.
    Unless you're a new brand, and want to purposely market to only half the population (which may be successful, cause you could maybe get that full half to be super loyal to you )
    Another approach could be to split your brand into two brands: one that markets to the left, and one to the right.

    • @r.m8146
      @r.m8146 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      A person appearing on an ad is not, under normal circumstances, a political issue; It only became one because right-wingers are openly trying to ostracize traspeople the way it used to be 20 years ago. The equivalent to this insanity would be people boycotting an ad because it is featuring a cis-person. You're blatantly and unapologetically saying that trans people can only work in "left" spaces. It is because this kind of mostruosity that brands must do the exact opposite of what you're saying,.

    • @WanderTheNomad
      @WanderTheNomad ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@r.m8146 So you acknowledge that the political landscape of America is not normal, but you don't think that brands should account for that when advertising...
      You know their goal is to make money right? Not to be political activists. Any political message they have will be performative, whether it's for the right or the left.

    • @mattymatt6970
      @mattymatt6970 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @r.m8146 you're really twisting my words to make me look like a jerk. Lol. I don't personally care what people /movements brands associate with. It makes no difference to me. I don't even care about different peoples ideologies, because I can separate that from the person. But it's not about me. It's about those brands being concerned about losing half their consumer base over night. I can personally talk about stuff like this without getting riled up, but I fully understand why some people can't, and that's why brands should market the brand itself, instead of things that have zero to do with it.
      As far as I was concerned, I just think Dylan is funny and thought she was a funny celebrity to have in a commercial, but what you said about the rights' views on trans people is either misinformed on your part, or simply disingenuous. People in the right feel like there is a creepy agenda to push sexuality on their kids at too early of an age, under the disguise of acceptance of the LGBTQ. Whether that is actually true or not, I can't tell you. But you can't blame people for thinking like that when their mental gears are already turning that way. They simply want things less sexualized (gay, straight, bi, etc.)
      It's just a touchy subject that will almost always create tension. And that's the reason we used to talk about this stuff less, and people got along better. It's the same reason the left would get upset if the right was throwing Christianity into every ad. You don't care that people are Christians. You just dont want to hear about it. It doesn't mean you're denying their existence, or wish bad on them. Sounds reasonable to me from both sides, until you guys start getting mad, and point fingers, while ignoring the fact that you both do the same shit. Everyone who has finally separated themselves from right/ left realizes you both have fair points, but also both act like complete idiots, and that you BOTH are the problem.... a very very bad problem. The social media landscape made everyone feel like they need to constantly say something or pick a side and it’s not optimal for business. Social media skews young, and young skew left, so everyone thinks it’s insanely popular to just always adopt the left viewpoint publicly.
    Look at the NBA, they went from Michael Jordan saying “Republicans buy sneakers too” and welcoming them to the game, to LeBron James and the NBA brass openly standing against conservatives in every way possible even literally saying they don’t want them to watch. And as expected, this caused their popularity in America to plummet.

    Depending on the way the stream is implemented, it may be impossible to query the number of viewers. What may happen is that a viewer will send a signal to the server saying they are watching. That cannot happen every second because the server cannot handle it. Servers cannot always query viewers because a server does not communicate proactively. The client, or viewer, has to request data for the server to do anything and the server cannot request anything from the client. There are ways around this via sockets but even then, the server would have to store the id of every concurrent viewer and track when they log in or out of the stream which is complicated and error prone so it is much easier to just let the client ping the server every couple of minutes.

    The only streams I "consistently" watched was some like 5-10 viewer streams on Twitch for a month or so at a time because that was basically just hanging out in a Discord server with a guy except I am watching them play a game we both enjoy. This talk about "brand risk" is so incredibly dumb to me because it just wasn't an issue 20-30 years ago. Companies would gladly sponsor a show that talks about serial killers, nazis or whatever explicit adult or politically incorrect content. It was never viewed as a risk or a liability because it was widely understood that the opinions expressed in a show didn't represent the opinion of the sponsors. Duh. They didn't have to align at all but now they do need to align because of social media. Except they actually don't.
    The only reason sponsors feel like they need to align with the creator now is because of cancel culture and that's because of the importance and power they willingly decided to give to twitter activists. If no one cares about what those dumb morons whine about then there is no issue. So you're already screwing up from the start by giving a minority group importance, power and control over you and over the culture.
    I didn't quite understand why companies were so eager to go woke because it sounds incredibly stupid from a business perspective. Like why anger and turn away 50% of the population in order to pander to 0.003%. Now I understand that it's because of the incredibly creepy ESG system they implemented. Corporations are now incentivized to be ideologically driven in order to get a high ESG score which can mean more money, bigger loans, tax cuts and whatever other benefit. And maybe in their mind companies with high ESG meant safe to invest into but now we can clearly see that's not the case at all because of the conservative boycotts. Like Michael Jordan used to say: "Conservatives buy Nike shoes too." so it will always be a very bad idea to spit on them or refuse their money.

    • @PanarchyTheater

      @@PunchmemommyIndeed when the religious right was trying to censor Mortal Kombat, Pokemon, Harry Potter and MTG in the 90s what happened? We all despised the religious right with a passion. It led to a huge revolt against religion in general and it's why the atheist movement exploded in popularity.
      Now the exact same thing is happening again but to a more obnoxious and unhealthy degree. Woke people are trying to censor, doxx, harass, deplatform and get people fired. So naturally more and more people from all sides despise them. The unfortunate part is that the rainbow flag has sort of become associated with wokeness (because of ESG imo) and most of the lgbtq didn't vote for wokeness to be their religion I'm sure. Their movement was hijacked by far left ideologues.
      I hate wokeness, not gays and trans. Many conservatives though don't see the difference anymore and conflate the two. That sucks because in my ideal world black people, lgbtq and conservatives should unite to fight wokeness lol. But wokeness I believe was designed to divide and conquer. To keep everyone fighting and hating each other instead of joining forces to make meaningful change.

    What Dan isn't factoring into the working from home vs. going to the office is the expense cuts for both employers and employees. Obviously if my employer can get away with having an office that's only 30% the size of our prior operation that's a huge saving.
    As an employee, if I don't have to waste 1-3 hours of my day on getting ready for work + commute, and can live wherever I want and have zero transport costs related to my job I'm willing to take a very significant pay cut, because that still leaves me with the same amount of money in my account at the end of the month + more free time and energy.
    In every way except for dead weight slackers this is a more efficient solution.

    Listening to Devin, Dan and Destiny talk about programming is insane. Elon fired a bunch of the people who weren't middle-managers, and kept a bunch who were. Meta just picked up a bunch of amazing programmers there, who launched Threads. Twitter have had a bunch of issues since firing a bunch of staff, engagement and advertiser spend are off a cliff. Work from home is more efficient for some tasks, and less for others. Our company has had a roughly 10% increase in efficiency since switching to mostly WFH, that's stayed the entire time. The reason Devin and Dan can't understand this is programming is a very difficult, very high-focus job. Unlike management. Open office plans are fucking awful for programming, maybe one of the single worst things that ever happened to productivity in programming. There is some argument for hybrid work, there are some tasks and positions that are highly team focused and those can benefit from face-to-face communication. The same thing with mentoring and code review. But the actual day-to-day work is hamstrung by terrible open office plans.

    37:30 I feel like an underappreciated aspect of different viewership/engagement especially on TH-cam content, is the AGE of a particular account...
    IMO, the older an account is, the more likely it is that the followers built up over time are not longer as engaged (or maybe not engaged at all) any more.
    The subscriber number is still high, but the number of 'active subscribers' (not a metric, just a short-hand I'm using) is most likely a much, much smaller number.
    Tiny has built his channels up really quickly over the past few years, so the 'active subscriber' ratio is probably much, much higher compared to people of a similar/larger size.

    kick should develop a good streaming app that both supports kick as well as twitch on the same page. imo the only way to beat a monopoly like kick, twitter or reddit is to either destroy it from the inside or make the competition not only better, but also easy to switch to without a strong disadvantage, which in the social network and content creation area is an userbase that not only exists but also seeks what is sold to them.
    having a "fake decentralized" platform that merges multiple sites will help that a lot if it ever becomes popular.

    Dan is wrong about concurrent viewers. It is hard to get live numbers of collections of anything on a large platform. As a dev, I can build a site that updates all relevant parties when an action affects a count on their specific view, but this becomes incredibly complex once a site scales to multiple virtual servers where the tcp connections and/or sockets aren't all open on a single instance. To do this you need some very complex orchestration logic with ACID compliant schemas to make sure data is deduplicated and data persisted accurately for historical uses. All of this spirals even more when you consider regionality and caching. In my projects I'll often put an expensive query on a polling schedule so it only happens every xx seconds and then when the info is requested, it gets cached and that's what the user will see until the next poll.

    Dan is so wrong on the Remote Work issue. The problem for a company demanding that it's talent come back to the office is on multiple levels. For one, companies aren't going to all band together to force everyone back in the office. Company A says that they are requiring all employees back in the office, then Company B is going to use that as an opportunity to hire that talent themselves by allowing them to work remotely and not having to pay them more. Not only that, but Company B is saving on office space.
    The other issue is that many companies have already hired people from across the country to work remotely. I work for a large company whose remote staff has risen to more than half of the entire company. Those people literally cannot be asked to come back to the office because most of them live too far away from the home office. The only option would just be to fire half of your staff and pray that you can rehire thousands of people just as talented as them who all live within an hour commute of your office.

    From a point of view of an unconvertable youtube-long-video watcher:
    I would never think to hop to a live stream of someone who I watch regularly to ask a question bc that's unintiutive. Like.. do u often think to have a live conversation with a news reporter from your local channel?
    TH-cam audience as it seems to me is much more distanced from their contentmaker of choise = a lot less room for (im sorry) parasociality that is fueling streaming world.

    I still don't understand what Bud Light or Dylan did wrong?

    • @luisochoa576
      @luisochoa576 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It's not a moral wrong, it's just a braindead move. What BudLight did is more than virtue signaling which is already annoying in itself. They decided to become politically and ideologically driven. Because yes gender theory, intersectional feminism and critical race theory are purely ideological.
      To understand why it's dumb imagine if they decided to be "more christian" in order to attract christian customers. If you are atheist or muslim yourself suddenly there's this awkwardness because you don't believe the things budlight believes. So naturally there's a chance you would stop buying from them or buy much less. Especially if you disagree with their message, what they're doing or how they're treating the lgbt. That's the exact thing they did but because you agree with the message / religion you don't see any issue.
      It's incredibly stupid for a company to get involved politically. Sane people don't want corporations to have ideologies and values we just want them to make the best product possible.

      @@rabd3721Gender THEORY is indeed a postmodern theory. The science / fact is that a transwoman is a biological male who identifies as a woman. You can be MTF or FTM trans (because there are only 2 genders, so you can only transition to the opposite one). Again that is the factual side of things. But society decided to "play along with feelings over facts" out of pity and to hopefully prevent suicides. So society decided to lie to them, feign acceptance and pretended there are 200 genders. That's the part not everyone is onboard with.
      Not everyone obviously agrees on the idea that we need to respect made up identities or "play along" with delusions or fetishes. The conservative stance is basically "do whatever you want with your life and body but leave me out of it, don't ask me for something, don't expect anything, don't force me to say things I don't believe and don't want to say." That's where most of the hatred comes from, it's the left who wants to force everyone to conform ideologically and accept their ideas. Demanding that people respect preferred pronouns for instance is compelled speech. You are forcing people to go against their deepest beliefs, which is one of the biggest forms of oppression.
      Wokeness is the complete opposite of multiculturalism. The whole point of multiculturalism is supposed to be to accept, respect and coexist with many different cultures but the far left is only interested in imposing their woke views and in erasing other cultures. They actually want cultural supremacy. Which is why Muslims are now joining Christians to oppose the highly illiberal religion of wokeness.
