You should look up what some of these freed prisoners have been doing when they got back home.
Not hard information to find but it is if you are one of those people who only read headlines and form opinions based on that.
Recruiting penal units is nothing new and it's economically very viable, win-win for both if the soldier survives, just have to pick the rights ones which Ukraine seems to have a process for.

Where is this 30k number I keep seeing, I can see multiple sources saying that Ukraine has high loses, so does Russia, last time I saw for Russia it was at just under 700k people and a myriad of vehicles and tanks. Last news piece I heard on Ukraine, loses affect them more and they are going to have a manpower shortage (more than currently) if loses continue.
Russia near the beginning, used prisoners in meat wave attacks, for PMC assaults and just... Man power plugs. Ukraine is using prisoners and incorporating them into the regular army, with the intention to keep them alive (as much as possible). During world war 2, the US did this as did many sides in various ways. Either jail, or to serve your country.

So far they have held way better than could have been expected (the Donbas was supposed to have fallen in june 2022), managed to beat the initial russian army and are depleted the russian old soviet stocks of equipment.
Ukraine may not have won yet by far, but they certainly haven't lost at all.
If anything, the argument could be made that Russia has already failed all of its alleged objectives:
      - NATO expanded even more with Sweden and Finland.
      - It's quite probable that Ukraine will enter NATO at some point in the future, even if Russia were to somehow win militarily.
      - The ukrainian government is still in power, the only thing Russia has achieved is to prevent a new election to take place.
      - way more civlians are dying in the Donbas now than in 2021 before the 2022 escalation (not hard as only 25 civilians died for the whole year of 2021 in the Donbas due to the war, mostly due to mines)
      - Russia doesn't control all of Kherson, nor all of Zaporizhzhia and is still a few hundred thousands casualties away from hoping to control all of the Donbas.

Maybe both countries should just end this war once and for all. Nothing is gonna be good if they continue to both fight each other

The difference between the way ukrainians did compared to Russian is the perspective of how each of these army sees the prisoners. Ukraine took the time to train the prisoners, provide adequate equipment and treated them as regular soldiers. Whereas Russia treated them as the lowest form of denomination, cannon folders. I mean just imagine, if you are a prisoner and have to choose between a russian or an ukrainian

Actually, it was Ukraine that was the first to involve convicts in armed formations, and quite massively, starting in 2015 and fighting in the Donbas against local militias and Russian PMCs. There was no talk of any serious moral selection, which is why, by the time the active phase of the fighting was gone, many of them went back to the bunks and are now partially involved in the second round.
And such "friends" were sent to serve their sentences not at all for fighting with the commander, but for violence, kidnapping, looting and much more. This was officially recognized, against the background of the first Minsk agreements and de-escalation, even by the Ukrainian authorities.
And so you tell fairy tales, creating the image of the holy and immaculate Ukrainian "neighbor Hannah"...

The difference between this decision versus Russians, is that Ukraine is choosing very carefully who they lead volunteer they don’t just let anyone who has a prisoner sign up and join, Russia other hand recruits anybody from the presents no matter what violent crime they did.

Ukraine doesn't have to use prisoners, they could lower the draft age from the current minimum age of 25 to 18.
