The way the head is shaped, it’s meant to break through ice. Like ships with pointed bows, for example. Imo the reapers are 100000x scarier. The shadow leviathan is rendered almost useless due to the terrain it is found in. Get in a prawn suit with a depth module MK 2 and a repair tool. The little details such as all the spikes facing inwards to damage struggling pray like real life creatures is also a neat little thing about the design. I love Subnautica for it's attention to detail that would otherwise go unnoticed and bring a bit of a realistic feel to it.
Interesting thing to note the mating ritual; as far as I know, all other creatures on the planet reproduce asexually. This raises some questions; 1.) Does the Shadow Leviathan display sexual dimorphism? 2.) Is sexual reproduction a derived or ancestral trait in the planet's animals? 3.) Why can only the Shadow Leviathan reproduce this way?
The bottom, shiny blue part, kinda makes me think of the lava parasites that take your power in subnautica (idk why); but this leviathan kinda scares me. What scares me is how its bigger than the reaper, and darker, but the reaper beats it in spookiness slightly because the reaper has nothing to show itself besides sound, so you can’t see it from a distance, can only hear it and you only see it sometimes when it is too late
I find it so fascinating to see gigantic creatures like whale sharks or fictional leviathans that'd you'd think would rip you piece by piece, only feed on plankton.
This one if definitely one of the best looking leviathans to have ever been introduced into subnautica. Although I doubt they will ever make anything as terrifying as the reaper again. But If they would manage do to it then I’d be really happy.
Reaper: "Watch u know about rolling down in the deep" Ghost: "When your brai- " * Chelicerate enters call * Silence * Reaper left call * * Ghost left call * * sea dragon left call * * shadow left the call * Chelicerate: " Am I really the most boring Leviathan? "

I think that the shadow leviathan feeds on mainly rock punchers as their primary food source and rock punchers are very common in the crystal and fabricator caverns since they can feed off of the large amounts of rock grub that are found there It is also possible that many rockgrubs use the jade membranes as nests of sorts sine they have similar colors and glows
Well recently I've been working or reclassifying and redesigning the fauna of 4546b and so far all seems to fit in well. The Shadow Leviathan looks... VERY different to most organisms on the planet but I think I know where it would fall in. From what I have seen and classified, I think that it can shelved with the group containing the Crabsnake and Reaper Leviathan. Either as an early offshoot, or a overtly different from.
So, this probably sounds crazy, but hear me out. What if the shadow leviathan is a distant descendant of the ancient skeleton’s species from the first game? Though drastically different, the share some similarities that aren’t found in most other animals, if any at all. The ancient skeleton and shadow leviathan both have 3 pairs of eyes, whereas every other animal has one or two pairs. Also, the ancient skeleton looks as though it had many limbs, at least 10, if not more. The shadow leviathan also has many appendages, close to its mouth and head, just as with the ancient skeleton. But also, the ice worm could be a distant relative of both as well. The ice worm doesn’t have limbs or 6 eyes, but it does have armor plating like the ancient skeleton and a long body like the shadow leviathan. What if at some point in evolution, these two species split off? One to live on land/ice, and the other to swim to catch bigger prey whereas living on the bottom of the ocean led to a lack of sustaining food

Interesting thing to note the mating ritual; as far as I know, all other creatures on the planet reproduce asexually. This raises some questions;
1.) Does the Shadow Leviathan display sexual dimorphism?
2.) Is sexual reproduction a derived or ancestral trait in the planet's animals?
3.) Why can only the Shadow Leviathan reproduce this way?
All very good questions - the only other creature I can think of that might be similar would be the reaper (unconfirmed) :)
I love your videos keep up the good work last bacon
Yay thank you very much! :)
@@TheLastBacon when are u doing shout outs
The eating animation when you talk about it’s mouth reminds me of the silent mary from pirates of the Caribbean
Oh yeah true I can see it :)
I love it that you almost answer every comment and that with 60k subscribers
Thank you :) I try to get as many as I can!
Oh yeah that's a very good point about the lava larvae :) I wonder if there is a connection....
yep since Reapers are canonically blind they’ll just roar at you. i’m pretty sure it’s some form of echolocation.
Below Zero forces you to encounter aggressive leviathans more than the original
Huh is that so? That's nice :)
@@TheLastBacon Define "nice" x)
Damn, this dude replies to even the most recent comments!😄
I try to yep :)
Boy it does like 30 damage, even a reaper would do more
Shame it isn't that dangerous :)
*the shadow leviathans just chilling in the caverns*
Me who wants the entire family heads:
GET OVER HERE
Oof :) That will be a fun collection!
I find it so fascinating to see gigantic creatures like whale sharks or fictional leviathans that'd you'd think would rip you piece by piece, only feed on plankton.
Oop 15 seconds ago-
Yeah it's certainly a reassuring thought though! :)
This one if definitely one of the best looking leviathans to have ever been introduced into subnautica. Although I doubt they will ever make anything as terrifying as the reaper again. But If they would manage do to it then I’d be really happy.
They are certainly awesome looking! :)
Such a good channel you deserve way more subs
Thank you very kindly :)
While others find them terrifying, I think they make a great prey item for the Prawn Hunt.
You are the doom :D
Whoa what a Good Video! Really Fun to Watch!
Thank you kindly :)
Man.. You just earned a bloody sub.

okay i really love shadow leviathan's swim animation, such a swooshy tail!!
Yeah they look very cool! :)
I love these videos keep up the good work👍
Thank you very much! Glad you like them :)
This creature just extends my unwillingness to play either Subnautica games myself. It’s fricking nightmare fuel but also a beautiful creature at the same time. One of my favorite leviathans overall!
That's a good way to put it :) ....Beautiful but nightmarish!
My first trip to crystal caves: was terrified of it before.
Me after my first trip: more terrified of it.
Yeah I guess the fear never truly goes away :)
Woah awsome video
Enjoy! :)
@@TheLastBacon ty btw.
Your videos are like..very weird.. Like I mean they good and nice but like it gives this scary vibe and it's just so beautiful. It's hard to do that. And your a legend and an amaizing creator to do that. Maybe we could collab some day :)
Wish below zero was on counsel, can’t wait to play it
Yeah hopefully it comes soon :)
I think that the shadow leviathan feeds on mainly rock punchers as their primary food source and rock punchers are very common in the crystal and fabricator caverns since they can feed off of the large amounts of rock grub that are found there
It is also possible that many rockgrubs use the jade membranes as nests of sorts sine they have similar colors and glows
I suppose it's possible :) Though I'm not sure they'd be able to bite through their crust.
You replyed to every comment so wholesome
Love talking to you guys! :)
You might be right for sure :) They do share a bunch of similarities.
I suppose it’s possible :) In a way I think many leviathans are distantly related to the gargantuan.
Great video! O like how you put do much effort into your videos
Thank you :) glad you enjoy them!
Nightmare tutorial. How to get nightmares
Step 1: install horror mods on subnautica.
Step 2: have minecraft cave noices when you enter a cave.
Step 3: have doom 64 soundtrack constantly playing.
Have good nightmares.
Bonus step : play in a pitch black room.
DLC: play outlast chase soundtrack when being chased by a leviathan.
Yep that sounds like a sure way to never sleep again :)
