just bought myself a 1978 Ford f350 really appreciate the video and knowledge I've never owned a car older than 94 so this is all a new experience for me
The dashboard knobs have a metal clip that holds them on, you have to reach in and depress the tab with a pointy object such as a paper clip. Just pulling them off like you did in the video is how you break the metal tabs.
Thanks for the help. My 77 f150 has an old school aftermarket pioneer unit from the 80’s with a power booster that randomly looses the left channel for no reason at all so I will be replacing it with a new single din style unit.
@460fordtruckman its super easy. you'll have a wire running to the fuse box for lights, a wire running to the ignition, not the ignition itself but the fuse for the entire ignition system, a ground wire going to the closest ground and a wire going to the ignition coil, you can wrap the wires around the fuses or get fuse taps. but make sure to put an in-line fuse for an wires that will be having any 12v current running through them. its like a safety net.
I just got finished installing a double din Sony XAV 1500 in my old radio hole.. This morning my Skar Audio FSX65 6.5 Pro Audio Speakers 4ohm came and my new VX35-ST | 3.5" High Compression Titanium Bullet Tweeters - Pair with Frequency Filters - Eliminates 0-600 Hz at 4 Ohms (Pair) should be here in a couple of days. Right now I am trying to figure out the best way to install the speakers with foam and fast rings, and the best way to run wire to the door
Nice vid, very instructional. I wonder if you could just bend the metal up flat under the air controls instead of cutting it. I can't remember exactly what it looked like so I don't know. Just a thought for those that don't want to cut it.
Good instructional video. I'm one of the guys who will never cut the dash of my old 72 F-100. It's in too good a shape. But they make AM/FM and CD players that will fit in my original radio spot.. Just too expensive.
@76hotrodF250 Thanks man for this video, i've been looking for months for a radio replacement guide, thanks to this vid i know have a weekend project, again thanks, and happy new year!!
Hey I know you said all the wiring is different for the radios but I was hoping you could tell me the wiring from the truck? I am trying to install a DIN Radio in my '74 and I have no idea what's what, being I bought it without a radio, but all I see is 3 speaker wires, and a large green plug-in type of wire(Power perhaps?)
Nice. Thanks for showing us how i have a lifted 77 ford f-150. Will be installing it this weekend, Thanks.Quick question where did you get your bucket seats from? What are they out of?
I have no AC either! I manage perfectly fine. I gotta rewire my head unit, as the main feed somewhere down the line has coem disconnected, and removing the dash on my MK5 Polo is gonna be a pain!
Hey man, I just recently got my dads old 74 ford f250 custom and I cant seem to find the speakers or where they would go. also did you ever have to get a wiring harness for the truck? my electrical skills on old trucks like these are bad but I just want some music to listen to while im crusin the old beast! if you can get back to me!
Clint Stringer. same issue. I got the 8track out. But not sure how the wiring works. I have a blue wire with a red stripe I hooked the stereos red wire to but doesn't work. Any info would help.
@76hotrodF250 @76hotrodF250 That was one scary as hell road! Really on the edge of my seat there. Loved seeing the Samurai though, my nieghbour had two of them (as you might have seen in my videos!)
@76hotrodF250 lol, dont worry about it! Yup, it will got alot hotter down here, we're lucky if we get 25C up here. That Bolivia one's the one with the range rover right? That is my favourite episode ever!
I just bought a 75 ford f100. I replaced my battery, voltage regulator and alternator just to find out I need to replace my wiring harness because its to messed up for me to work on.
I feel your pain, I've had this truck 12 years now, and last year my headlights started to not work properly, one side comes on the other doesn't until I hit the high beams, then both start flickering on and off. Easy truck to work on, but wiring can be a real pain, its over 40 years old so I can't complain too much.
I had to do some research myself on it, but there are 10 nuts holding it on. You can carefully remove the glovebox liner, its old cardboard so be gentle, and get at the nuts holding it on. You may also have to remove the air vents/hoses to get at some of them. Hope this helps.
West Virginia Mudder Hmm, this one had A/C, but the whole plate with radio and air controls was one solid piece. I had to cut the radio section off to put in the new radio as did my friends who had these trucks too. Interesting though, maybe some had different plates?
Now that I have pulled off the wiper knob as per your instruction, it will not go back on and slips when I try and turn it thanks for the awesome video!!
interesting! on 87-96 ford trucks/bronco there is none of that bracket stuff. just take the old radio out and put a new one in plus wire it. nothing needs to be cut. sombody actually converted mine to the old style like yours came with. i don't know why but its floppy and looks like crap. i am gonna put a ford premium sound stereo back in from a ford probe. best stereo ford ever made hands down.
@76hotrodF250 Mines a year 2000 ;) and it really is a pain in the butt. I wouldnt know about Ireland, I've never been. Im in Scotland buddy. haha. Im really not a fan of plastic parts on anything!
As stated in the video, there are no wiring adapters for these trucks. I ran all new wire to the power, ground, accessory, and speakers as indicated by the wiring for the radio I bought. Its really easy. All radios are going to wire up pretty much the same. "red +" to the battery, "orange or yellow" to a switched power source like the ignition, "black -" negative this is your ground, attach it to the metal dash or something metal. The other wires are just speaker wires. Always coded in 2 or 4 different colors depending on if its 2 channel or 4 channel radio. Each speaker is a channel. Usually one is gray, one is white, one is purple and the other is green. The colors I mentioned are common, but not always true.
I like your "green machine" I'm gonna have to rename my 1978 F250 from "old yeller" to 'rusty' or something 'cause there isn't much yellow paint left on it ... check out how I use it sometime on jdat747
Thanks for the vid on this but I wish you could’ve given a little idea about the wiring. Not explain how, exactly, but go a little more in depth on whether it’s a difficult wiring job or not
Well I probably should have, but I made this video 8 years ago, and I did things differently back then. Honestly I thought people would know how to wire it up, and the video was more about the physical install of the radio into dash, which back then people had trouble with. As for the wires, I just shoved them into the fuse box like a young fool would do haha. So not really difficult but I did not want to show on camera that for sure.
Not the best way to use a plastic bezel to hold a radio/cdplayer best to use the proper bracket that is made to hold a DIN Radio CD player 1973-1979 F Series and 1978-1979 Bronco uses the same style bracket
this would've been a LOT more helpful if wire colors would've been mentioned. anything on the subject would've been helpful, running those wires is gonna go right over 70% of peoples heads
you claim there is not a kit to properly mount a cd player I used this one back in 2009 to mount mine on ebay item number 321076230991 it is metal and mounts to metal instead of the plastic bezel nice clean and solid

Thanks for the video. I just bought a 1978 Ford F100 with the original radio that does not work. I didn't want to tear my dash up. This really helps !
Thanks for the help. My 77 f150 has an old school aftermarket pioneer unit from the 80’s with a power booster that randomly looses the left channel for no reason at all so I will be replacing it with a new single din style unit.
Nice you should do One on how to install the 3 little gauges and the tac.
They do make modern sound systems that fit the hole.
@460fordtruckman

The headlight knob has a set screw on the knob instead of reaching under the dash. Screw can be removed by an Allen wrench.

thanks for the video man! it hurts to cut the dash but hey, its just a truck.

I really needed to see how to hook up the wires, I have a below dash 8
track installment.
Clint Stringer. same issue. I got the 8track out. But not sure how the wiring works. I have a blue wire with a red stripe I hooked the stereos red wire to but doesn't work. Any info would help.
Shawn Thompson did u figure it out I’m having the same problem
@76hotrodF250 @76hotrodF250 That was one scary as hell road! Really on the edge of my seat there.
Loved seeing the Samurai though, my nieghbour had two of them (as you might have seen in my videos!)
were did you hook up the accessory wire on your truck for your din radio?
Thanks for the video!
@76hotrodF250 lol, dont worry about it!

nice vid man
Is it tach accurate? What did you connect it to? Mines a little off

@@76hotrodF250 ain't that the truth. my head lights do something similar but they don't flicker
Put a gen three alternator and pigtail on it
Thanks for sharing
Will that work for a pioneer radio too
do you have a amplifier for a sub or just the radio?
What radio did you put back in it?
Dude can you show how to remove the glove box trim ring, the thing is that I've looked all over the internet but can't seem to find any info... thanks

can you do a vid on how to install a tach
Air Conditioning trucks had a removable dash plate,so on them you don't have to cut.
West Virginia Mudder Hmm, this one had A/C, but the whole plate with radio and air controls was one solid piece. I had to cut the radio section off to put in the new radio as did my friends who had these trucks too. Interesting though, maybe some had different plates?
How do you wire it
would this work for a 1979 ford granada.
Now that I have pulled off the wiper knob as per your instruction, it will not go back on and slips when I try and turn it thanks for the awesome video!!
that's the only way to take it off. Try putting some glue inside, just remember it may be more difficult to get it off in the future
In model with no ac you can remove dash trim and reah head light button easy
Oh ok ac dash trim nice
interesting!

What radio harness did you use, i cant find an adapter for a 79

Your cat looks just like mine! lol

How original

Thanks for the vid on this but I wish you could’ve given a little idea about the wiring. Not explain how, exactly, but go a little more in depth on whether it’s a difficult wiring job or not

It don't come off cuz it's working you need to go to the back and press that button like you were saying!?!?
Classic cat action.
460? distributor is in the front
No wonder the headlight switch is messed up.
Not the best way to use a plastic bezel to hold a radio/cdplayer

Uuujj
Get the out of the truck you will ruin the seats
Wrong! The first thing you wanna do is roll down the windows and drive that piece of shit into the nearest lake!
You need to stop
Stop? Stop what?
What did you wire the memory wire to?
Was a very long time ago, but I just found a always hot 12 volt source at the fuse box for memory wire.
