Day 1 - Basic to Advanced Helicopter Autorotation Training - live audio

  • This video is the 1st of a 5 part series of advanced autorotations in the Robinson R44 helicopter. The first day started back with some of the basics and then each subsequent day getting more advanced.
The previous job I was blessed to be flying a twin-engine BK117. We never did autorotation training so it took a little bit to get back in the groove. Even then learning new techniques is still a challenge.
This video's purpose is for education, hopefully helping people see some techniques that are outside the box of the traditional training environment. I wish I had learned these techniques 3,600 hours ago when I first learned. The videos are not intended to replace actual instruction for a good instructor.
    Fly safe and Keep Learning!

Thank you for praying, it brings encouragement to those that still pray.

When I first saw these videos I thought the sideways flare was a bit risky but could see how the maneuver could be helpful in a confined space auto. Recently the machine I’ve been flying was involved in a nose over accident the resulted in it collapsing the passenger compartment enough to badly injure the pilot. Being able to arrest forward motion AND prevent a nose over, even if it results in a roll over sideways seems more attractive now.

Thank you for praying before the flight. I am 6 hours in my Helicopter Training and not doing well at mastering the cyclic and hover. But I will start my flight training like you praying... thanks for the reminder.

Hope you got it figured out. I think everyone struggles with hovering at first, perhaps me more than others :/
But I'm now a damn good pilot and vertical reference pilot

Do you pull collective in the last part of the flare where you pull the cyclic (when you basically pitch about 45 degrees)?

I’m not a pilot, but this is really interesting!

Great control 👌. Always been timid to get behind a Robinson, but after see the manoeuvrability and control you showed was an eye opener. Always been told these helicopters are unpredictable. Doing my ppl in a schweizer269 which are pretty forgiving.

269 is a great trainer, not taking anything away from the 22 but the 269 is a great choice.

I wouldn't say unpredictable, unforgiving though...
Things happen pretty quickly and rotor rpm can decay in a hurry.

@@geddon436 I agree! I trained in the 22 and upwards of 8k hours later I don't think I'd leave the ground in one.

Hey mic, would you be able to explain what "slip" is and what its used for in the Auto ?. Love the vids

    • @michaelmiller85
      @michaelmiller85  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

A slip in generic terms is when you fly the aircraft out of trim, primarily to increase drag, resulting in increase descent rate while maintaining airspeed. AirSpeed will not be accurate during a slip since the air is not going straight into the pitot tube.

For bird strike. Or in case of a real emergency, you end up landing in not such a nice way and you roll over the heli, then would be nice to protect your head with something.
