I'm thanking about getting my 4 yr old started in chickens I us to help my grand paw but he built everything and this is a good refresher. Thanks brother for info
Love all your informative videos. Will be using them as a reference when I'm finally ready to get my homestead up and going. Appreciate the hard work you do on getting the info recorded and on yt. Thanks so much!!!!
Thanks for the great videos. I'm getting ready to buy a property and start raising quail, ducks, and turkey again, but i can't wait to start raising chickens for the first time.
Most important thing you said, and I do, is always plan for easy access to clean, add water, food, and secure from predators on any coop design! Oh, and nest boxes...I have 11 laying hens and 4 boxes, they rarely use more than 3 of them, usually only 2. I like the shelf liner, I have to do something. They always clear away any straw or chips I put in boxes so the bottom is bare where the egg drops lol. Not too many break but still...
My chickens our at my back door around 5:00. (The Doc. Says that I can't out side between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm) They know that I am on my out with some kind goody for them. Got to love the chickies. Nice job you have. Great videos. God Bless.
*Hi! Great coop! We converted a large dirt-floor horse stall in our hundred year old barn a couple years ago; we do a deep litter with a combination of 2 parts straw ( **deam.design/ylum** ) to 1 part pine shavings.*
I love how you re-purpose things… you’re like the MacGyver of chicken coops :) We move back to the U.S. soon and I can’t wait to have some backyard chickens for my kids. We home school so it’s all education! Thank you !
Great video! I think this would be great information for someone looking to start a flock. These are a lot of the little things that makes a big difference in making a successful and rewarding experience. Great job!
just a tip; i put the water on bricks to stop them from scratching stuff in the water. i have a tripod for the feeder made of T post for the same reason. I train my chickens with old bread. I tear it in small pieces and throw it where i want them to go.
Hey just found your channel. I'm in Australia and even though only small yard trying to do what I can by growing fruit and veg and quails. love the info you share . thank you
Great Video!! Love the intro to your videos..I have even been known to raise my hands at "what ever part of the world ...lol" Good series...we use the plastic version also for feed. In one ccop we have both metal and plastic. You said it make the run/coop accessible! It seems the first season or two sure teaches you alot!
You can make a pull string to open that small coop door, and counter weight it, so that the door closes when the string/rope is released. That way you're not worrying about bending down or knocking your heard. All it takes is a bit of rope, and a couple eye bolts.
Our 8 Buff Orpingtons hatched 20 weeks ago today, and we got our first egg last Wednesday!!! These are my first chickens ever, so I'm hungry for any and all tips and information on them !!! Thanks!!!
I raised chickens as a teenager 40 years ago. I hope your chickens aren't pecking each other to death or to where you can't seperate the mean hens. They're like sharks when they see blood from plucked feathers. They just keep pecking at the victim. That happened to my best egg layer.
I had the same problem with eggs breaking, especially from one hen that laid eggs standing up! I tried all kinds of nesting box liners, but the chickens scratching as they laid eggs tore them up. Keep a bale of grass hay in the big coop, I stuff the nesting boxes with that and it last a good long time, and need to restuff the boxes about ever three months. I just pack the nest boxes about 3/4 way full and the hens do the rest. Haven't had a broken egg yet!
Love your videos, I don't know how you find the time to make them considering how much you have on your plate. I saw some really cool (cheap) coops made from palettes. I think it was on Pinterest.
Hey there Dude I have a suggestion for another source to feed the girls there's all sorts of vids on youtube on this but grubs via soldier ant bins or dyi fly bucket in the sky...also a video of your morning chores and other chores would be really handy for beginner steaders thanks much :) god bless
Being the cheap scot that I am my waterer is a reused 5gal bucket and plastic storage box. A small notch on the bucket and learning how to invert the bucket into the box and I am done. My 18 birds that set up will last about 3 days before I need to refill.
I'm from Tennessee and they don't care how you keep your chickens... But I recently moved to North Carolina and they send inspectors once a month and you have to order a 1000 dollar plus coop. So I'll wait till I move back to Tennessee to get another flock.
I'm guessing "hawks" are not a problem in your area, as I don't see a net over your chicken yard, I see one area netted but its small.....My grandpa always said; a smart hen will run in the chicken house when she senses a hawk in the area, but I've heard of them raiding the chicken yards. Growing up and staying summers at my grandparents, he made us clean the chicken house/coop once a week :( he said it kept down disease and rodents taking the eggs. Maybe he just wanted some free labor - LOL chores were so fun! ha! - not
Hi! Thank you for great videos, I am watching and will keep watching them! I have a question: If you have hens that you will allow to sit on their fertilised eggs, to have little chicks... would you still separate them from their mum, as you have a 3 sections system. May I ask if you would, what are the benefits, and also how would you go about it, as I imagine hens won't be very happy about it. Also what would happen if you had all 3 age stages together all the time, what problems would it cause? Many thanks!
Forgot to ask this...on that 5 gal waterer...ever had sealing problems? I have a 3 gal and the gasket was too big from day one, it's never sealed properly without a LOT of effort. How can I shrink that rubber gasket? Any ideas appreciated. My 5 gal one works fine.
When you close the door at night for the chickens, are you locking them from getting outside? Or locking them from getting in the run? Or do they always have access to the run, but you let them roam free during the day? Just a few questions. Love the videos!
bahahawahaa chickens butt run around da corner n sew it up ......... great video. I have 10 chickens, my coup is 5x6, not very big for winter time is it. hmmmm Mines pathetic looking, guess I should rebuild or add too.
Please point out all the flaws with my idea. My wife doesn't want a "chicken coup" so I was able to get her on board with a temporary structure. We plan on starting next spring with some jumbo cornish rocks. Were only interested in meat. My idea is to build a rectangular pen on the ground, throw some straw and an old pallet or two to keep the chicks off the ground, cover about half the top with hardware cloth and the other half with plywood. The sides would be hardware cloth all the way around. We would have a removable section of the top for feed and water. What issues concerning chick health and predators are likely?
Couldn't you install a simple pulley-type system for that back coop door, so all you'd have to do is pull a rope to open/close the door? Might save your back!!! Thanks for the video!
I've never had chickens but so happy too start as mine will arrive tomorrow but I want too know is there a certain time period you have too collect eggs don't mean too be stupid but will they spoil
I loved the video. I have a question. Can you keep chickens, ducks and turkeys in the same area? How do you find reliable breeders for heritage breeds? The same question for rabbits, I would like to raise angora.
Katherine Taylor I think once the birds are adult you can keep them all together. As for finding breeders, I think the best way is just to start asking around you local farmers or homesteaders. Sometimes you can find cards at a feed store, a local fair, or craigslist type websites. Good luck Katherine............................J
Hi John, question about the lockers for the laying portion. Does it get real hot on/in there? Or is it positioned where it's not a big deal. Love that idea by the way. Been watching your videos for a while now. Always informative. Keep it up, God Bless!
Steven Malott They do not get real hot, they are in the shade most of the day. If they were in the sun all the time, they would probably get really hot I think.................................J
Chickens are noisy at times my rooster starts crowing every time I try to make a video. But I love m feathery babies. Plus i love not having to buy eggs!
Help! I need advice. Somebody gave me 4 baby chicks. I think they're around 3 months old. I've never kept chickens before so I don't know how they should behave but I'm beginning to wonder if they're healthy. They won't touch any food other than the commercial crumbles - they won't touch lettuce, kale, beet tops, water melon, bread, berries, nothing. I'm keeping them in a disused dog kennel until I rig up a coop and they won't leave it. I have an acre of lawn for them to range but they refuse to leave the kennel. I rigged up a plank for them to roost but they won't roost. Maybe they're too young? Does this sound like normal behavior?
Looking for help. Chicks coming out of incubator. I started with 35 checked eggs when took out of turner 32 fertile with small chicks. Now hatched only got 14 chicks. Kept temp around 99.5 to 100.5 humidity stay around 65 till out of turner then kept it 85 to 95. Why so low % of chicks. What I am I doing wrong?? Any help would be great.
Rich Ctree Hey Rich, we are having problems with our hatch rate as well. We think it is due to the big fluctuation in the weather and humidity. We try to keep our humidity at about 60%, and it has been difficult to do with the crazy weather we have had. All we can do is keep at it and not give up. Good luck bro................J
How big of a coop would you recommend for about 25 chickens or more? I am working on an SAE project for FFA and I am planning on selling eggs... a lot of eggs.
+Sariah Avila Well Sariah, I have always heard 2 square feet per hen is a good size, I have about 25 now, and my coop is about 8 foot by 10 foot and it works great for us. Hope this helps, and good luck, the FFA is a great program...........................J
Depends on how much time they are out of the coop. In my area a smaller coop and large fenced and covered run work well. I do 1-3 square feet per bird and 5-6 for a run, my run is 8 foot tall and cover with small tree branches to keep hawks and owls away because they are a problem for me.
mady snuggles I will usually not eat the ones that I do not dispatch myself, I just don't take any chances. When in doubt, throw it out..lol............J
Very well done! Straight and to the point. No glitz, no background music, just the info that people need! Really a great job! Thx
those lockers for nest boxes is one of the best repurposings I have ever seen.
Chicken Butt
Guess what?? Chicken butt!!! LOL Your so hilarious John! Just shows your great personality! Thanks for chickens 101 lesson
I'm thanking about getting my 4 yr old started in chickens I us to help my grand paw but he built everything and this is a good refresher. Thanks brother for info
I have been watching you J for 3 yrs and you sure have come a long way with your animals. You have lots of great buildings now
The birds all seem happy....not sure much else matters :). It is very functional for sure. Thanks for the video!
Love all your informative videos. Will be using them as a reference when I'm finally ready to get my homestead up and going. Appreciate the hard work you do on getting the info recorded and on yt. Thanks so much!!!!
I am so jealous of your nest boxes I love the idea of the lockers

Great chicken video series.
With that many hens, I'm sure that at least one wants to go broody, how do you accommodate or compensate for that?
If we ever get out of this #$%& state I'd like a small farm
Being the cheap scot that I am my waterer is a reused 5gal bucket and plastic storage box. A small notch on the bucket and learning how to invert the bucket into the box and I am done. My 18 birds that set up will last about 3 days before I need to refill.

Do you put any type of product on the ground in your chicken houses or runs to keep the smell down ?
Move lil door use wire or a rope to pull up and down. Easy breezy.
I've never had chickens but so happy too start as mine will arrive tomorrow but I want too know is there a certain time period you have too collect eggs don't mean too be stupid but will they spoil

If you don't live with your chickens, how many times a day would you have to go check on them? more than once?
Miss your videos
