    I sure like the meat & flavor of a Wild Pheasant too. They in my own personal opinion is one of Best of all the wild birds I've Eaten, and I have eaten many over the Years. Pheasant Ranks in "ONE" of the Quality of Taste to my likening. The Males have Plenty of Color. Yours are looking Great..

    I learn something new every time jnull uploads. I used to raise quail and they can be the noisiest, nastiest, grouchiest birds and they're high strung and nervous birds to boot. Glad to learn that pheasants are so gentle and they seem to get along pretty well. That might change a tad once the mating starts but with only one male, it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Thanks for the video. My day isn't complete until I get a jnull homestead update!

    Would love to have some pheasant on our farm. Thought about raising them and quail.
    Just a bit of advice that may help. The fishing industry has a market for tail feathers from pheasant. We have two peacocks. They hatched out about 7 chicks back in the spring. At the time my brother had just purchased a Black and Tan pup. He got to the chicks and killed everyone. He got in a heap of trouble. He went to doggy jail for two weeks. Inside the pin where they were is where he stayed locked up. Maybe next year one of the kids will pay closer attention then to leave an open gate.

    John I have the original 8 hens and 1 rooster that were given to us. They are older, but I have no clue how old. We now have in addition 14 chicks, from the hens. What do I do??? Do I go ahead and butcher the old hens now? We did butcher on (I did) and she was so skinny and tough... had a lot of "YELLOW" fat deposits but not thick meat... Of course as I said, I do not know how old nor how they were fed or anything prior to us getting them. "YELP!!" How old should they be for good table food? Thank you for all your "YELP" .... I am a green horn "grin" ... Thought I would remember more from when I was a kid... another time I must say, Daddy sure knew more than me, and I see this the older I get!

    • @craighinkel8821
      @craighinkel8821 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I also started out with Hens and a Rooster given to me, I now have 10 Muscovy Ducks, 20 chickens, 6 Turkeys, 30 Quail Age is hard to tell so at around 3 years old they slow or stop laying eggs, the size of eggs are the best indicator of age. For large size Chickens ( RIR, Bardrock, ect ) Large eggs old Hen 3+ years old laying 3 to 4 eggs a week.,Medium size egg 1 to 2 years old laying 5 to 6 eggs a week, Small egg 6 months to a year old or small size breed. Harvest unwanted roosters at 6 months, The meat should be refrigerated for a week or more untell the muscles and tendons relax. Then cook. Older chickens are best in stew or canned meat Good Luck

      I put them on a water only diet 12-24 hours before culling. An empty system helps stop with leakage while cleaning .

    The pheasants are beautiful. I've seen some around here in NE Georgia. Only just got a shotgun but I think that would be overkill... LOL

    • @ChattahoocheeHomestead
      @ChattahoocheeHomestead 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm no hunting expert but I'm learning through reading (don't even have a shotgun yet). There is something called birdshot which I'm thinking is used to hunt birds. Of course the "shot" has to be cleaned from the bird, but because of the "spray" pattern of the shot it's probably not a lot. I may be way off base here but if you look into the hunting regulations here in GA I think they specify what may be used to hunt different wildlife. Hunters be kind and forgive my ignorance, correct me if I am wrong!

    • @OneWomanAndTwoAcres
      @OneWomanAndTwoAcres 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll look into it. Of course, nothing is allowed on my place. My dog sees to that... But I've seen them along my LONG driveway!

    • @bobinmissouri
      @bobinmissouri 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Chattahoochee Homestead in Missouri you have to use number 4 or 5 shot for turkey squirrel rabbit and other birds

    Hi, just subscribed to your channel. I had watched one of your videos on the pheasants and then came across this one so I went on ahead and subscribed.I just had a question and that is well I have seen people with large amounts of chickens and to save on feed they let them eat the weeds and such and also they put scraps in a bin to raise black soldier fly's and the chickens go nuts for those. I was wondering do you do the same to help with your feed cost?

      Guinea fowl may be a better choice...pheasants will leave unless you keep them penned...guineas will stick around, and quickly rid the entire area of ticks.
