Paul one thing I would differ with you. I don't believe in entry-level. It's not the gear it's you skills that makes the gear. I'm a 50 year veteran. I use the t7 the canon 75-300mm and I use the sigma 150-600. All great gear that fit my budget. People can buy much more expensive gear but if they haven't the skill it's the person that's entry-level not the gear. The best gear is what you have and use everyday. That's where I'm at. Paul you do great work and I have shared your videos to help others.

Well, we are a mere painter looking for a brush in the end of the day. Sigma 150-600mm is great choice especially for small birds, even with an old Canon 40D, it will do a job.
Sadly, trends nowadays favours consumerism instead value of patience on crafting the art. Passing a knowledge about bird's biological clock and respecting their activities also diminishing slowly 🥲

Yes, I agree with you, I also used a T6 for a long time and took many perfectly focused photos of hummingbirds, but photography does not have to be stressful, it is about enjoying

EXCELLENT! 5 tips: 1) Capture the "catch light" in the bird's eyes. 2) Position photographer at bird's eye level. 3) Use a pop-up blind and patience. Ideally bird is close and background clutter is far away for boca background. 4) Birds typically take off and land into the wind, so ideally wind at photographer's back. 5) For water birds, place camera at water level on the ground and use the flip screen. With bright light, a great "budget lens" is the Canon RF 800mm F/11.

The T7 and Telephoto Lens you are using is exactly the same set up I have. Yes light is the enemy early in the morning. This is why I typically wait until after sunrise to get some shots.
I love that Canon has a free photo editing software that is new user friendly. I do not like nor care for the subscribe model for software. Just not my thing.

Hey Paul, once again a wonderful and mastery vedio for all ❤. I also love all those birds in my locality because I think they are in danger and getting shrinken day by day. I have a Canon SL2/200d with a 55-250mm f4-5.6 and it takes great photos, but as you said a better glass is indeed better in all scenarios. I want to improve my birds photography in future and I hope you'll be a great teacher in that. 🎉

Hi Paul, Nice to watch another one of your great videos, that I've used your Techniques and tips into my photography. Your right about that Rainbow Honey Eater, great shot and the colour was exactly how those Birds look. The Moon and Bird Silhouette was great to look at. I like the sound of Motion Array, having artificial noise that sounds so much like real Birds, etc. I will check out there Website. Much appreciated for this helpful video. 😊

Great video yet again Paul. As a complete newcomer to photography you have become my go to TH-cam instructor!
I have a Nikon d7000 with Tamron 70-300. I really want to get good shots of Kingfishers at a local lake. I have no hide etc. I find. Can get to within 25m of the birds now.
My question is, will my 70-300 kit lens get me close enough at that distance please? Many thanks for your help.

Very informative and interesting, about the picture of king fisher shaking the water i do not dislike, I like the sense of movement.I have a question about those big white birds, very common also in my area. Many times I lost detail of feather because they reflect too much light, sometimes i get better result by lowering exposure to -0.3 or -0.7 , is it a good trick or can I change something else to get better results?.thx in advance for the answer. And yes I saw the blooper at the end!😁

Nice video Paul. I use Canon's M 50 Mark II with Canon's 55 to to 250 mm or the 70 to 300 nano lens . Put in Dpp4 and finish with Topaz AI, very sharp image. I have no problem at 1600 or higher. Great job on that video. On my crop camera the 70 to 300 becomes 480 mm.

Brown honeyeater and Rainbow bee-eater (The bird nerd in me has to correct you). See any snakes there. I’ve seen a huge python the past 2 times I’ve been there. Also have seen Keelbacks, a tree snake, what I think was a Marsh snake and a Red-bellied black snake. Have also seen pics of Eastern Browns there but am unlucky in spotting one. Good to see your channel is doing so well.

Thanks for an interesting video Paul! Not too surprising. On number of photos taken for one 'good' one: That is quite high for me as I purposely play around with different settings within M, varying shutter, some aperture, and even the exposure compensation (I do generally stay on auto ISO except for night shooting). And 'good' varies as I sometimes get the image I had in my mind, but sometimes get a different one I like better. And though she doesn't know it I even moved my wife to M! My second body (having gotten a Z6iii the day they were released here in the use) is a D7500 with a NIkkor DX 18-300 (WONDERFUL lens - I think better than the 24-200 I added to the Z6iii). I leave VR on, set the shutter to 1/500, aperture to F8, spot focus and auto-ISO... her keeper rate is very high with those general settings for outdoor. Thanks again - always enjoy just listening too you! Best!! Steve

Hi Paul, for bird I.D I use an app called merlin, you can record ambient sound with your phone and it tells you what birds you have around you. Works very well in the UK. Not sure how extensive it is over in Aus but worth a try 👍.

Nice video Paul. Doing bird photography with Lumix LX100 Mk 2 Compact point and shoot camera is really challenging. You can not change the lens at all. It comes with a Leica lens, which is good. Bird photos are never sharp or totally in focus.
When are you and Suzanne from Brisbane Camera Hire, going to have another photography challenge???

    Johannes

Hi Paul, thanks for the video. I was wondering if there is a minimum focal length that you would consider to be adequate for someone who is just starting on bird photography? Currently using a Z6 with a 24-200m.

I’m shooting birds all the time using 420mm. Sometimes I’d like more range, but most of the time it’s enough. I could get a 150mm-600mm like Paul uses in this video, but the optics just don’t compete with the lens I’m using. (Canon 300mm f2.8 with 1.4 TC) to get the optics I’d want in a longer focal length I’d be looking at a $20K+ lens. Megapixels can be useful as well. Cropping gives you effectively extra reach. I started mainly with the 70-200mm but for smaller birds, it’s a bit lacking. In saying all this, one of my fave pics I’ve taken was of a Kea which was shot with a 28-70mm. Paul suggestion of renting a lens could be worth doing.
