VW Jetta TDI - Relay 109 ?? Won't start! Won't shift!

    Drove my 2000 TDI Jetta on day, ran fine. Next day, crank but no start.
    Watched a few video's and this one nailed it. Went out and turned the key, no glowplug or CE light when key first turned. Sounds like a match.
    Next day off to VW dealer, picked up a 109 relay (eeeek $58 with tax) and after removing lots of plastic and 7 screws could finally access the relay. Swapped it out, and it fired within a second of turning the key.

    No check engine light & glow plug light is usually a bad 109 relay. The check engine light coming on (when the key is ON) is more important than the glow plug light... meaning if the check engine light does not come on, the engine computer (ECM) is not powered up by the 109 relay. Glow plugs are not needed to start the engine unless ambient temperature is less than 7c

      So far so good with the new relay 109, no CEL either. I'll consider it fixed if I go another month with nothing crazy happening.

      I had a simar problem but whit a 2.0 jetta, when first turn on the ignition epc and cel does not como on and car no start, then repeat the cycle and everything comes on and the car start but on limp mode every time i clear the code the car ran like new but when i stop and turn off the car for even seconds and restart the car cel and epc are off, then repeat the cycle and statts but is on limp mode again its driving me crazy

      @@victOrMazOn When turning the key ON the check engine light should be ON... if not, then the ECM power supply relay might be bad.

    I have a similar issue. The car will crank and crank and crank but never fire up. I removed the cap on the top of the gas tank and pulled out the filter and sending unit cleaned it all up good (it wasn't too bad anyway) and put it back in. I installed a new fuel filter. I also Purge the system with new fuel using a vacuum pump. I wasn't able to pull fuel through the return line on the injection pump because the engine would have to be running to do that. I jumped the fuel shut off solenoid relay by connecting a wire to the terminal on the solenoid and running it to the positive side of the battery. I checked the 109 relay, I'm not sure what it typically does but it does click when I turn the key to the on position. I also checked the waste gate valve on the turbo to make sure that it wasn't stuck and as far as I could tell it was good. I sprayed some good quality starting fluid with lubrication properties in it down the intake got it to run for a few seconds but that's it. I also disconnected the battery terminals touched them together for a bit to drain any capacitors from the car's computer and that didn't do the trick. I checked to make sure the inhibitor switch wasn't causing an issue but wasn't completely able to determine whether that was a problem or not. I did almost everything I could think of to figure out what the problem was, I got as far as I could without the proper diagnostic tools. I don't have all the tools to check the compression of the engine to make sure that's good but it seems to have good compression just by how the starter Acts and when I go atteempted to turn the engine over by pulling on the serpentine belt but I can't get it to turn over doing that which tells me it's probably got good compression. All in all that's what I've done. Hope this assists someone.
    The problem occurred out of nowhere, turn the car off when I got home and went to start it the next day and it wouldn't start. I'm assuming it's an electrical issue. I brought it into a mechanic this morning and will update you on what they say.

    Thats your best bet man. I am just going through this nightmare only its a 2015 jetta. Parked at resturant and while it idled it just died and wouldn't crank over. Check youtube lots of folks saying its Rele 644, some have stated its 645 and even one say it could be the power rele which is 523 and thats an expensive little rele. Other thing is for months i have noticed a drop in gas mileage. I was just not getting the same mileage i use to get and the car would act wierd from time to time while driving and then it went silent and had no more issues but the lousy gas mileage stayed the same. While back i checked codes even though no light came on the dash and it threw out a p3 code. So I checked it and it said crank shaft position sensor. So I said what the heck bought that part to. Waiting for all the rele which btw is 7 of them if you decide to replace the 646 rele as well. I decided i am just going to replace it all at 160,000 miles so i don't have to do this again. So 2 644 Rele, 2 645 rele and 1 523 rele and 2 646 rele.
    Funny thing about my issue is i have power to the dash, car would act like it wanted to start but it just kept cranking. I will not rule out a starter issue. But for now this is what i am fixing. In all 380 dollars for parts and a few hours my time. I may even for the heck of it buy new spark plugs, coil ignition pack and plugs just to say ive done it. If it was an alternator i wouldn't have power. So it is wierd. Frustrating because i put $1300 into fixing a radiator issue and ball joint. The springs and ball joints in this rig suck! They go out super fast. This vehicle also seems to have a lot of sensor issues. One good thing is that you can get into the engine and fix things rather quickly without having to go under the car.
    Last issue this start and stop issue could be is the ECM god forbid. But it is possible. I will update my post to let those of you know.

    What can i do If i have the glow plus light on but still the engine isn’t starting..? Exact Same symptoms..cranking but not starting.. but i do have the glow plug light..what might be the prob?

      @@miljkovicsrb Hi Brother, the two fuel pipes which come from the fuel pump to the diesel filter, A stupid mechanic “interchanged their places on the diesel pump”😐Hence the pump was running dry and eventually the engine too. Engine wasn’t getting diesel and dry cranking was happening. It took my sometime to guess as not everyday you come across silly mistakes like these.. Was suspecting many other things but not this. As soon as a saw the pipes on the diesel filter I switched them back.. bled the fuel lines from the injectors and my problem was solved!

      @@mallikarjunreddy4974 On my Golf, it starts but now when the temperatures are colder, sometimes it starts and sometimes not. It usually happens when I go somewhere and park and then after 30 mins or more I can't start it.

      @@mallikarjunreddy4974 Yes but only for a second or even half second. Sometimes in the middle of the ride glow plug symbols appears and starts flashing.

    A mechanic told me 109 relay needs to be replaced and he showed it under the hood but any videos I watched has 109 relay under dashboard. I am so confused. I have a 2005 vw beetle

    How do i get you on the phone man i have an 01 tdi 1.9 and SAME ISSUE FOR MONTHS lol. But mine hasnt ran in months either, do you think and oil change would help with starting it? I know an oil change helps regardless but you know.

    does the glow plug light cmon on everytime no matter what? like say i turn the ignition on let them warm up and start. if i kill the engine and turn the key back on right away, will the light still come on if nothings wrong or will they already be warm?

    Sooo i hope to get that relay . My car turnd off out of nowhere. It started and then it was done. I waited n clead wires around battery . It started wen i drove it ,the transmission wudnt shift into 2nd gear it starts n first has alil power i cant even burn ot wen i put gas pedal to the metal. I thought it was fuel pump and fuel pump relay . So i hope its that relay thank you

    Try to remove the throttle electric connector on the throttle and clean it with wd 40. Strange but seems to solve the epc light problem.

      The relay fixed both the shifting thing and the starting problem.

    just so you know when I pulled out the 109 relay and turn the key to the on position all the light still came on including the glow plug light and then turned off like they usually do. I don't know if this is supposed to happen if the relays pulled out.
