In one of the highlight sets of Top 8, Zain pulls out some nice moves against Hungrybox to steal game 3. I thought I’d take a closer look - grab a snack and check it out :)

It's so easy to miss these micro-second life-or-death situations in Melee that happen constantly during high level play. I'm digging this series, it's awesome to have it broken down and made easily understandable
So one extra thing this means is that Hbox would have lived if he simply buffered the jump. For those who don't know you can actually input tap jump 3 frames before hitstun ends to buffer a jump on the first frame out of hitstun. Hbox even uses tap jump normally so I guess he just missed the input (it happens, it's tournament).
That's really interesting. I didn't think Melee had input buffering.
Is it exclusive to tap jump?
@@factandsuspicionpodcast2727 Yes that's correct. It's actually a problem sometimes when you are trying to survival DI and end up burning your double jump due to accidental jump buffering.
@@factandsuspicionpodcast2727 its not exclusive to tap jumping, shield rolls and spot dodges can be buffered as well
@@factandsuspicionpodcast2727 There is a sizable amount of things that can be buffered in Melee. In addition to the things others mentioned, you can buffer jump out of shield (using c stick, same as spot dodge and roll). You can also buffer dthrow (also using c stick, no other throw can be buffered). A third one is getup attack (if you press a during the knockdown animation, this one is incredibly annoying and often gets you killed). There are probably others I'm forgetting but overall I think Melee does a great job with keeping the buffer options limited.
@HoneyPopsicle You are confused. Buffering tap jump out of hitstun (doable as any character) is not the same as Jigglypuff buffering a double jump on her own.

Amazing editing, and a great breakdown of the intricacies of small interactions that have big impact and the player skill and game theory that goes into them. For a game like Melee with such high actions per minute this kind of breakdown is perfect, but also a lot of work to do in such detail so big props for the time put into this. I’ve always wanted to play competitive melee but haven’t had the time or means. But I’m a HUGE fan. The handskill, knowledge, and reaction time of high level players still baffles me. Everyone breezes over the frames needed to do these inputs but it always amazes me that they can act on FRACTIONS of seconds

The NIL on DL, Yoshi's, FoD is something I use constantly against puff/peach. It works perfectly for situations like the above.. you can also dash from centre, preform the NIL whilst having forward momentum, land on DL platform and immediately F smash. Catches so many floaties out.

holy moly I didn't realize that good NIL was a 1-frame window.
Simply overlooking the also frame-perfect pivot tipper! For those who don’t know, as I understand, Zain turns around for one frame and one frame only. Someone smarter than me can explain why that is below 😅
Empty pivots allow for way more leniency. When doing a pivot f-smash you can flick the stick back to avoid doing a dash and can do any grounded action out of it. This allows for pivot jab or pivot grab with little issue
