Something that I've noticed that seems a bit more meta about PW's design (which may or may not be a accident) is that all top players that I've seen put him as the point (first) character, making him begin as the seemingly weakest link of the team and taking on the full brunt of the enemy's team, but I think that's the point, as it further mirrors him beginning in a disadvatange. There's also the fact that with his teammates covering for him and by being on the battle from the first second, PW has better chances to make his case as if he's also beginning a new case in his game, rather than suddenly taking over the case from somebody else. Also with specific assists and supers, PW can easily break his opponent's guard, like with Maya's super, in which if you attack in either low or high (I don't remember which one, the opposite height to Maya's) on the last hit, you get a guaranteed opening. It makes me think of the final cases of the games, in which PW always needs the help of his friends to truly come out victorious. He's a monster in his own right, but he's at his best when working alongside others, and it meshes greatly with UMvC3's team focused gameplay. Man, I was sad when he didn't return to Infinite, but considering the hot mess that that game was production wise (unrelated to the fighting game on its own merits), I'm kind of glad he didn't at the same time.
I love Ace Attorney and Nick's appearance in UMvC3 always tickles me as one of my top choices and an entry to truly get into traditional fighting games instead of watching from the sidelines. Nick in UMvC3 is so perfect that I've got reservations on him getting into Smash Bros cause I doubt they'd make him as cool as he is in MvC. I'd still love to see him regardless but it'll be tough to top perfection.

You should go back all the way to X-Men cota. It's interesting because that game established the fighting style and animations of marvel characters which still persists today in fighting games.
For the longest time, I was always fascinated with Earthbound(and Dragon Quest recently) characters being adapted from a first-person turn based RPG into a fighting game. Particularly their Spells and how they appear in Smash Bros.
Ace Attorney is basically the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure of puzzle games. I mean, not only does it have a similar level of over-the-top absurdity, but the cases are even structured similarly to a lot of Stand battles in the series!
What do you mean that its structured similarly to Stand battles in Jojo? I'm a big fan of Ace Attorney, but I know barely anything about Jojo so that sounds really interesting to me
@@battousaix4263 In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, the enemy will usually have some strange ability that has them starting the fight with an unfair advantage. The main character (or side character in some battles) then finds some creative way to use their own ability or a weakness in the enemy's to take the advantage for themselves. Then, part way through the fight, the enemy will usually take back the advantage with some other creative use of their ability. From there, either the main character or side character in question finds some weakness in the enemy's ability to exploit and wins the fight, or in some cases, the enemy wins the fight. This is similar to how most cases are structured in Ace Attorney.
So glad to see Marvel vs Capcom 3 on this channel. It did so much for its characters, and no character got better treatment than Phoenix Wright. He even has some of the extra recovery animations that SFV season 2 onward characters have, like 5 years before that game came out. Great video!
I still think to this day Phoenix is still the most well translated character into any fighting game ever and in the most creative way possible. His gameplay works and feels like an Ace Attorney game. Maybe the only other character I can consider is Steve in Smash Bros Ultimate, as he effectively turns a match into a game of Minecraft Manhunt.
I'd like to point out that in the 1.0 version of umvc3, Phoenix Wright turnabout mode was so powerful, on assists, he had super armor! Yes, that man can walk through supers and stop them!
I remember when I was kid growing up playing umvc3 i literally knew everyone else but Phoenix Wright well him and Arthur and Phoenix in this game alone made me a fan of him especially his expressions and animations 🤣
Finally a video recognizing my favorite fighting game character of all time! Idc if he’s considered one of the worst characters in UMvC3, he’ll always be in my team
When I first saw Phoenix gameplay in MvC3 I didn't really gave any consideration other than being a joke character. After playing the first game in the franchise recently (TGAA) I could really see the effort put in adapting him and what his game represents. The good news is, with Karuma by his side Ryunosuke can probably fit in easier in the next Capcom Vs game without sacrificing his overall gameplan.
While Adventures is first chronologically, it is relatively modern in terms of release date. Adventures was released in 2015, while the very first Ace Attorney back in 2001.
One of the things I love about Marvel VS Capcom and Smash Bros. is well they tend to adapt characters from other series and be very faithful with their representation, capturing all the traits of their personality. Even if they really "don't fit" in a fighting game, the devs make it work.
He may never be a top tier but Mr Wright is probably one of the best designed fighting game characters ever. It's really smart what they did here. Good luck designing another character that fits this "function".
This is such a wonderful summary of the Ace Attorney formula and how the UMvC3 translated it really well into a fighting game. I think it's worth mentioning that aside from fitting the attacks that aren't really attacks style, Maya's role in the moveset also sort of reflects her role in the original trilogy. Pheonix is the one doing the cross examining and general lawyer stuff, but Maya's headstrong attitude and spirit channeling powers are an invaluable support that has helped him in numerous cases.
I always talk about how perfect this character is, every Phoenix fight in UMVC3 feels like its own Ace Attorney case contained in this little fighting game
I could cry right now. It’s 2021 and the niche court room vn game that I love and that my fiancée is obsessed with that has a character in a 10 year old fighting game has a video being made about him. though im not a phoenix wright player, ever since his trailer dropped i always appreciated his animations and how he expresses himself and what his games are about. i really wished daredevil was playable in ultimate mahvel three, so we could have a team "courtroom drama" with wright and she-hulk.
This and the Monster Hunter videos are the only videos of yours where I have any idea what the hell you're talking about, but I'm watching them all anyway. Your writing & delivery are really strong, engaging, and snappy, even when I have 0 context or prior investment! Props to you :)
That would explain why Phoenix's X-factor the comeback mechanic to turn matches around as one of the highest damage buffs in this game. Still a stupid mechanic IDK if it's good design >:(
Besides the brilliance of adapting Ace Attorney into a fighting game for Phoenix's movesets, I also like how Maya is implemented in his moves: Investigation Mode is the only mode where he access to Maya's shield reflecting how she helps him primarily during investigations. In Trial Mode, he can't use the shield referencing how Maya's assistance is limited. There is also the Order in the Court Hyper Combo that sets him back to Investigation Mode and destroys all bad evidence, referencing the Judge calling off the trial for the day and telling both the defense and prosecution to resume investigation.
You just made a video about JoJo's fighting game, proposing that making one that was in tone with the franchise would be very hard, since the enemy stand user™ is on the advantage at the start of the fight, but this character give us an example of a posible solution, maybe player A and B could select a move-set and at the toss of a coin, one player gets to keep its move-set and the other is given a random one, mimicking the use of new abilities and creative problem solving used in the show, of course this is something I just came up with, eventually the players would know every posible random move-set, but what im trying to say is that giving player A an advantage and B a comeback through the understanding of their new moveset doesn't necessarily make a bad game
i love this video and i find myself revisiting and sharing it a lot as i struggle in my own design career. i need to watch more of your stuff when im not drowning in work but keep it up, youre awesome!
My favourite example of capturing a feel of a character is sephiroth in smash bros The dude can shot out flare, one of the strongest moves in ff history as a neutral b If you arent on your toes constantlu he will break your shield and kill you at zero. I always find it funny since I found Lythero first everyone brings up IHeartJustice and I'm just here like "what about Lee?" The effect of coming into different realms via different doors. But now I REALLY wanna give Phoenix Wright a try. Just to send Galactus to jail.
The hitboxes shown are edited, they aren't what they actually show, all "boxes" in umvc3 are bubbles, you can see on my channel I made a Phoenix wright hitbox video from the VITA which is the only way to see them.
Phenoix is the character that makes me wish i could've gotten into mvc3 even tho i would probably drop him after pressing a button with him but now the scene is dead. I hoping so fucking much that Mvc4 would get announced or maybe even just another Ultimate Mvc3 type of game where MvC3 gets improved again.

Adaptation Excellence could be a good spin off series for this channel. Especially for subjects like Steve in Smash and Negan in Tekken 7.
I believe he objected (harhar) to Negan a bit. Mainly cause Tekken didn't really bring over what made Walking Dead so unique, instead making a "Miguel but with a bat" character.
yeah, he mainly issued the fact that Negan is intimidating in The Walking Dead, but why should he be ny intimidating to most of the Tekken cast? I think he mainly used the trailer as an example, but I don't remember in which video
@@Sawplanik it was literally titled "A.B.Itorial: Neagan?"
If any Tekken 7 guest character deserves an Adaptation Excellence its easily Akuma.
This is probably a minor issue, but I'm surprised that you didnt mention him having a really high HP Value or the best X-Factor in the game as part of his Mechanical Characterization
That actually makes sense because in the actual Phoenix Wright games he goes through things that would kill - or at least severely injure - normal people (like getting ran over by a truck and flung into a street lamp or breaking through a solid wood door

@@chimaeraarts Ah, an elevator music.
This energy that made Phoenix Wright an interesting game is what made him interesting in the mad game of Marvel vs Capcom 3
God, the quality Capcom can bring to their games when they put their mind(s) to it is nothing short of amazing.
Phoenix Wright being in MvC3 is just like... the greatest fucking thing ever and not enough people appreciate that fact.
I’d love to see Phoenix (or one of his friends/ancestors) return in MvC4.
I'd love MvC to return in MvC4

"Yes!"
Honestly, I'd say Smash would just transplant him from MvC3, cause the moveset is that good.
Loving this, it's thanks to people like you that I stay motivated to make this character appear as great in UMVC3 as he does in his game
Fun fact, this game doesn't actually use hitboxes. This game uses hit "bubbles" which is why wesker's cr. M will occasionally miss on standing enemies, when no distance has been changed
I didn't actually know that! I thought hit bubbles were specific to 3D fighters like Tekken. Is that how Phoenix's standing H hit Wolvey from sweep distance?
@@SugarPunch Your favorite fighting game designers, NRS, also use this, and they are as good at implementing them as they are at making their animations.
Smash bros also uses hit bubbles

@@princejax2748 Oh yeah thought bubbles can absolutely break his bones; I'm not arguing that, but thought bubbles aren't paper.
Yes they both serve the same purpose, that purpose being to write on, but that doesn't mean their "weapon viabilityness" is in anyway comparable.
That would be like saying a cave wall and a tee-shirt cause the same amount of blunt force trauma when you hit someone with it because you wrote "Can kill Galactus in one hit" on both of them.
@@selfsustainedautocannibalVampi
HOLD IT!
Why were you so adamant about Wolverine's unbreakable metal claws not caring to pieces of paper in a game where even the mightiest and toughest of heroes/villains flinch from a mere sneeze of a *lawyer* that the papers in question came from? 💀
*< TAKE THAT! >*
@@pacodapea432 First of all according a sneeze can travel around 100 mph. I couldn't find anything on how fast a standard sheet of paper can be thrown but apparently cards can be thrown only 75ish mph. Meaning a sneeze is technically more dangerous than a thrown playing card and a thrown card is significantly more dangerous than regular paper.
Also, sharp objects like scissors and claws beat paper. You can't cut a sneeze in half, the blade will just pass right through it and get dirty.
HOLD IT! That Hitbox is clearly a contradiction!!
This game uses "bubbles" (like Smash Bros, Tekken, MK11 and others), not hitboxes.
Most characters: Super human, war machines, gods, people with strong wepons and demons
Phoenix: "you missed your child support payment, Vergil"
So glad to see Marvel vs Capcom 3 on this channel. It did so much for its characters, and no character got better treatment than Phoenix Wright.
He even has some of the extra recovery animations that SFV season 2 onward characters have, like 5 years before that game came out. Great video!
Phoenix is easily my favorite implementation of a non-fighting game character into a fighting game
I was just thinking about this. It's amazing how well they translated his character and playstyle into the game
UMVC3 Phoenix Wright Was a Comeback Machine.
Since, you know, like a turnabout.
Phoenix in MvC3 is both an incredible inclusion AND his alt palette references Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. They truly outdid themselves.
Iheartjustice and lythero are the 2 people who are famous for using phoenix, and i recently just watch the new video and im happy.
MvC3's Phoenix Wright is for sure one of my favorite characters in fighting game history. Such an amazingly designed and fun to play character.
Waiting for this to blow up when he is announced for Smash on Oct 5
How’d that turn out haha
I cracked a bit when the first downbeat you showed on the graph was "updated autopsy report"
I like how turnabout mode make pheonix wright probably the strongest character in the game
This game doesn't have hitboxes, it has hitSPHERES. They're SPHERICAL
This was such an excellent explanation for NOT ONLY the transition into Marvel vs. Capcom 3, but just Ace Attorney in general. 💚💚💚
I still think Phoenix Wright is one of the best designed characters in fighting games.
I like how in some ways he's like a spruced up version of norimaro
There’s a reason UMVC3 was my first fighting game. And I totally noticed how how good he was represented
my main finally got his abitorial, thank you so much
Nothing to do with MvC3, but Capcom's puzzle visual novels are so good. Ace Attorney and Ghost Trick.
Those two are created by Shu Takumi.
@@dbclass4075 I know, that's why I mentioned both.

It's the only character I need in SSBU.
Great video, also I like how you mention iHeartJustice but not Lythero even when you use both their gameplay lol
And a special thanks for Lythero for providing prime Phoenix Wright gameplay visuals
I could cry right now. It’s 2021 and the niche court room vn game that I love and that my fiancée is obsessed with that has a character in a 10 year old fighting game has a video being made about him. Thank you for making life interesting. Ps ace attorney best music go watch the big band skull girls ace attorney music cover by mao okay cheers
though im not a phoenix wright player, ever since his trailer dropped i always appreciated his animations and how he expresses himself and what his games are about.
i really wished daredevil was playable in ultimate mahvel three, so we could have a team "courtroom drama" with wright and she-hulk.
Still a stupid mechanic IDK if it's good design >:(
Why else do you think many players aim to KO Phoenix Wright first? After all, eliminating the lawyer before he finds the evidence is a valid move.
He and Franziska were supposed to appear in an earlier vs game, but were scrapped for time; what could have been
Whip is likely the primary weapon.
You could say his endgame has “reached out to the truth”.
I love that this video also analized how the phoenix wright cases are
You just made a video about JoJo's fighting game, proposing that making one that was in tone with the franchise would be very hard, since the enemy stand user™ is on the advantage at the start of the fight, but this character give us an example of a posible solution, maybe player A and B could select a move-set and at the toss of a coin, one player gets to keep its move-set and the other is given a random one, mimicking the use of new abilities and creative problem solving used in the show, of course this is something I just came up with, eventually the players would know every posible random move-set, but what im trying to say is that giving player A an advantage and B a comeback through the understanding of their new moveset doesn't necessarily make a bad game
Good to see you cover one if my favorite video game characters……& my UMvC3 main.

This is a very cool video! It's absurd that Phoenix somehow fits perfectly in a fighting game
Phenoix is the character that makes me wish i could've gotten into mvc3 even tho i would probably drop him after pressing a button with him but now the scene is dead.
