    Great vid. Exactly what I was looking for. I'm about to upcycle a double bed into a single loft bed and I like the way the bed frame fits on the posts. Thanks

    I loved the bed I just wish you had added a little more step by step and provided more explanation. I am seeking to build a bed for my daughter and would have loved to make this bed but since I am new to all this your video is too brief for my entry type skill level. I think you did an amazing job though!!

    This is awesome. I've been looking for a simple design just like this, but I think I would forgo the screws/glue, and use threaded inserts and bolts so it could be taken apart multiple times. I would also make notches for slats instead of using a single piece of MDF. Personally my idea bed would have this exact style, but functionally should be easy to take apart and move.

    I was curious. As of April 2016, I can buy an 8 foot long "2x4" board from Home Depot for approximately $2.39 US. I am under the impression this video is made and produced across the pond and or mainland Europe. I recently bought wood in Sonora, Mexico - at the Home Depot in Hermosillo. Wood is more expensive in Mexico due to the softwood and lumber trade restrictions between Canada and the U.S. The wood I bought was sourced from northern Mexico and at the time the peso was trade at 1 U.S. dollar to 16 pesos. The cost was very close to the U.S. price, however, adjusting for Mexican wages this explains why concrete and brick are more commonly used given the relatively expensive price. Thank you sir.

    This is true, but at the request of the bed owners wife the mattress was to completely cover the frame. You could use non slip mats to stop a mattress moving. This mattress being a heavy one hasn't moved.

  • @JamieTransNyc

    What is missing: Drill LOTS of holes in the MDF. Mattresses are supposed to be able to breathe through the bottom, that is why most beds have "slats" instead of plywood.

  • @DavidMcLuckie

      ***** That's an excellent idea. Your other option is to glue and screw a U shaped section for the support beams to slot into, means you aren't removing any material from the sides. Thanks for the fingers tip, made me chuckle.

      Gra Piken I dont think it should be this complicated. I m going to build my own...get Lowes to cut the pieces to length and the legs dont have to be like that with slots. Remember when we build shelves by laying the planks on bricks? I'm going to just nail my sides, top and bottom to some square, squat pieces of wood.

    • @bettyechols6405
      @bettyechols6405 6 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @SneakyLoud

    my friend thought this was a good idea years ago, turns out the reason the have panels is so that the air can get in through the mattress freely, if the air cant do that, you get this lovely build up of mold layering under the mattress, due to sweat and god knows what else! DONT DO IT LIKE THIS!!!!

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  9 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Big Red Well there is no mould under the mattress. I'd also like to point out that there are a great many storage beds with solid mattress bases. Please also complain to those manufacturers.

    Is it necessary to plane the 2x4 studs? I guess it won't matter much if they are already fairly straight. Try not to get the extremely warped/bowed studs, I guess.

    • @DavidMcLuckie

      It wasn't so much the straightness, but the finish of the wood. We bought cheap rough cut timber and planed it just to make it look a little nicer.

      Whatever you want them to be, and construction grade pine. No. Seriously. Just go do it. Wood type isn't important if you don't care about the color (which you probably dont as you'd stain or paint the bed, not use special oils to make the natural wood color pop.

    My only suggestion. would be instead of 2x4 for the sides. Use 2x8, then use a 2x4 to act as a supporting brace under the slats. Because when it gets down to it, each slat is only supported by 6 screws.

      ***** Into a contact that's only 2x4 wide/ the screws may be rated to that weight. But the lumber will split before it reaches that.

    Hi,question.... did u just placed the mattress on the top of the platform? Wouldnt it slip off or move sideways?

      krukera19 The mattress is indeed just placed on the top. But it's a heavy one and doesn't move. If you have an issue with it sliding you could use non-slip matting underneath.

    You could put a zero clearance adjustable base on that because it’s built so sturdy.
