I guaranty I know you. Small world! I live in Florida now but played with these guys for a spell in 1980'ish. I think lol...kinda foggy now. Was China Boys time. Their more punk'ish period.
Yup, the two biggest bands to come out of Langford'Victoria are The PAYOLAS and the DAYGLO ABORTIONS. It's sad that some of The PAYOLAS records were not even put on CD ever cuz they are one of the best, they fused together "Punk, Ska/Raggae, Hard Rock" all into one.
Produced by the late, great Mick Ronson. Great band, The Payolas. Stupid music biz forced them to change their name to Rock and Hyde. Payolas was a fab name.
Gastown did have The Lamplighter as a serious live music venue earlier this century ,but, Donnelly group got hold of it and screwed it all up. Just the other week I did sound for one of the rare live music acts they've had there recently. The room sound was terrible as the carpets, the stage, and proper equipment to do live bands was long gone. Had to bring my own gear. Was grateful I was able to keep the feedback at a minimum considering the high tin ceiling and depletion of sound treatment. Not to mention the audience was ignoring the band and yaking at the top of their lungs. There are still some decent venues in the eastside of Vancouver who still host live, original music: The Rickshaw, LanaLou's, Pat's Pub ( in The Patricia Hotel ) and Pub 340.
A Very Interesting Band that i was Unaware Of ~~~~~~~~~ - But - Fell in Love with their " Eyes of a Stranger " Song ~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am so glad and proud to have signed The Payolas to A&M Records. Man what a group! A ton of great memories for me.
Well then you had a great ear and great insight Mike....the rest of us are glad too!
You have the ear.

David Foster ruined them,…….
Great ear 👂
Related. Neighbour Bryan Adams signed with A + M too.
Did you sign him or somebody else?
Too bad they never got the recognition they deserved.
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Great live version of "I'm Sorry"! Wish they recorded Good Job too!
My high school band. Langford!

Thanks for posting...this stuff is rare!
These guys were raw but they were awsome.
Love those drums
Oh these young men are going places, mark my words…… sigh
That is a great version of 'Eyes of a stranger'!
The great producer Bob Rock on guitar…
Later in 1982, they were the opening act on Rush's Signals tour.
That drum kit is a serious rare collectable now!!!
Staccato? If I'm remembering it right. North was the other one.
The Payolas are da bomb!!
Great venue. Town Pump just down the block, Railway Club a few blocks further.
A great 'live' version of= "Eyes of a Stranger" begins about 6:39!

It's not like they had to. They could've just kept their name. Their game plan for appealing to the Americans kind of backfired.
Yes....but they lost all their support ($$$) to keep putting out LP's
David Foster killed them,…..
Sounds good! Gastown was awesome for music in the 80's & 90's...its been a joke since then!

I loved the Town Pump. Saw some really great bands there. Jellyfish in 91 was a highlight
Bob Rock does not get enough credit as a lead guitarist.
This can be a demo to other musicians as to why he knows guitar and rhythm.

isnt the savoy on haistings?
Savoy was an upstairs club in Gastown Square
upstairs where?
Jon Braun #6 Powell Street
@@gwaiieagle8986 It reopened in the late 90's as Gastown Music Hall. Saw Art Bergmann there. Just a short hop from Co-op Radio.
One our best live music venues, when live music was at it's best here....
Great!! Too shy to dance, t.n.t love that stuff!!
Kind of sounds like men at work..
Dig that set of Staccatos. Such cool looking drums. Too bad the audio and video are so out of sync.
