Fly fishing New Zealand 'the DREAM STREAM'

  • With a long winter fast approaching, myself (Mike Kirkpatrick) and good mate Hans Kreuer, have planned a last fishing trip for the season to the North Island. We'd made a made a tentative contact with Miles Rushmer, who guides up around the Bay of Plenty
region. We were to find out it was indeed a 'bay of plenty'...
A big thanks to Miles for giving so generously of his time. It was great to experience something so completely different from what we have at the top of the South Island for sure, and while it may not be every anglers cup of tea, we left with permanent smiles for a few days.
Its important to note that these are pre-spawning fish moving up the system and we made a pre-trip decision not to target any fish in spawning mode. We also practiced 'limiting our catch' not 'catching our limit' I certainly hope you enjoy my wee movie and tight lines.
Mike is available for guided fly fishing based in the Nelson region www.latitudeguiding.co.nz

I can't imagine how the fish aren't spooking with the fly line swooping over their heads and rod tip flying all over. They just hang out while you're fighting fish too, just swooping back and forth! The fish do not act like this on west branch delaware, they are GONE if you cast like that. Amazing, love it!

This is quite easily the name the video describes, the clarity of the spring fed water with the amazing blue hue, the number of the fish and the size of them, like the fish do not get bigger in a natural environment, most of those fish will grow at the biggest to 10-12 pounds in their lifetime, though there is the odd one that grows even larger, I know someone who has caught a fish of 20 pounds in the other major tributary, and he says he knows others have caught larger, almost up to 30... And the surroundings of course, the ferns and the trees, I don't know why but literally ever corner on that stream even in the lower reaches there seems to be several blue gums, not down the sides, just where it takes a bend. Again, spectacular.

In the 90s we also had such large collections of brown trout in Germany, Baden Württemberg (38:05). There were so many that we could even catch the smaller ones by hand because there was a fish under each crack.
Today there is a yawning emptiness everywhere, because with a few exceptions we cut off too many large fish. Fortunately, there are first areas where you can only catch medium-sized fish (small and large are prohibited) and the number of fish has been reduced. I hope this will happen across the country.

That river with its crystal clear water & beautiful scenery is the best I ever viewed. Your smooth easy going fishing approach was great. I would like to fish there myself, but to travel from West Michigan would cost to much. I would love catching a couple of fish, but it seemed to easy to catch fish in that stream. I would get bored of easy fishing, but if I was there I would end up just walking along the river to see trout & beautiful scenery. Again it sure is a nice video !

Yeah I agree Mike, sight fishing is the reason I love fly fishing so much too.The whole scenario is just so addictive and keeps you wanting more, the more technical the better the fishing in my book. Nothing like a challenge, so rewarding when it you get it right.

    Hi Mike
I really appreaciate your work and what you are doing for the region and the sport. In fact your work is probalby the main reason I decided to take an english course in nelson... just that i can go flyfishing in about 30 minutes drive. With your inspirational work and with a lot of reading I found out about that secret places you are able to fish :-). I always liked your movies and your style, which was, especially in the beginning pretty close to vestergards style in matters of filming technic and sound. And today I know that Mortens trout was not even a big one ;-)
Today's movies are way more unique and usually I just love them. And eventough I am really thankfull for your inspiring work and I had in all other cases a great time watching you and your pleasant mates doing what you're doing I find it quite nasty to fish for spawning trout. I guess, or at least I hope you and Hans did know what you where up to and I just hope this movie is maybe having an impact on season reagulations on the north island. Stuff like that should under the changing conditions weather and eviormental wise not be allowed. But that's just my opinion, because our fishery had been wreked during the last 30 years (Switzerland).
Anyway, keep up the good work... I just hope you guys and guides really know and appreatiate what you have there, especially in the south. After all I have seen it surely is one of the worlds finest places not only in terms of flyfishing for big ol'browns... just keep that fishing sustainable and always put them beautiful creatures first.
    Greetings Michael

mTech1337 Thanks for taking the time to comment and your kind words. That said, I'm getting a little tired of people making uninformed comments about a subject without taking the time to understand the situation. The fish in the Taupo and Rotorua fisheries are unique in that they spawn almost the entire year with heavier concentrations of movements over summer and winter on freshes. This uniqueness make them stand alone fisheries that conform to a different set of standards. In speaking to the locals and guides who work these regions (not to mention the local rangers who actually encourage taking more fish) the fishery is as healthy as it was 50 years ago - testimony to a working management system. Therefore egg patterns are the norm year round in these creeks and the fish we saw were pre-spawning and not in spawning mode. The fishery has a season defined for a reason and certainly weren't picking fish off redds. If you took the time to read my bio on the movie you would have seen that. Hope this clarifies things.
