Since the two beams interfere the electric maximum component is at the minimum magnetic component of the laser field. At the central region of interferece they placed the 2D material thus that matterial was observing only the electric component of light. This shceme has been used to access metastable nuclear spectra. Also when metastastable nuclei are accelerated to relativistic speeds in a vaccum accelerator they will see those hard x rays even harder...
