Ive done a lil chainsaw milling, I do it free hand, I use a grandberg milling chain so much smoother than a full chisel stihl chain. I’ll need to get a couple new saws as they will put lawed in 2 years. No off road gas engines will be allowed after 2024. Chainsaws generators, sawmills, waste pumps. air compressors. nothing will be sold in kaliforniastan. It’s crazy
I did a little bit of milling with my 25 inch bar in a granburg mill but with a 25 inch bar by the time you subtract the hardware of the mill you can only mill about 18 inches of material so I got the longer bar so I can mill bigger logs
I loved seeing him roll in with everything hooked in a train! That was definitely a heavy log and I’ve done enough logging to appreciate the work involved. I sure miss our old Circle mill, I think that was the one thing I liked over running equipment. Take care!
Holy smokes that was a big log! We've got a Woodland Mills 130 max and love it. We put ours on the extended trailer, but I sure wouldn't mind having one as long as that trailer. Wow...
He must live near you? I just did a 10,000 lb 16ft pin oak on our woodland mills hm130 like his. Huge pain in the ass. Buddy needed some heavy duty beams cut for the loft in his barn.
Why wouldn’t you pick the front with the winch in the air set it down on the trailer and slowly move the pics down the log. feed the log onto the trailer for hauling and weight reasons.

@@RockhillfarmYT Ya it’s nuts here, extremely over regulated. We have horrible smog laws, as a business owner we can’t have diesel trucks older that 2011, we can’t cut trees for wood for hire, unless the owner is using the wood for a project on his land. We have to use graded lumber to build living spaces. No wonder rich folks are leaving California. I have talked to so many people, when they retire they move out of state. Up where I’m at is so beautiful, right thinking folks it’s so nice huge trees it’s awesome. Sacramento, the Bay Area and LA libs rule this state with an iron commie fist! I’ll move when my wife retires she is young than I am. God willing any way. Oak 2x12s wow super strong!!!!!!
I tend to agree with the wastage comment. I think you got really happy with the chain saw and took a lot of excess off when you didn’t need to. But its your log and you git what you needed out of it i guess so nice job.
I couldn’t tell you exactly. The jacks were not made for a sawmill. i’m pretty sure he just bought them and put them on it If you want more information on it you can check hoods custom shop on TH-cam and I think he would probably answer any questions you have
I don’t think the milling section is customized. He completely rebuilt the trailer and log deck area. If you need more info you can go to Hood’s custom shop TH-cam channel and ask him there
Not sure. I’ve heard people say put burlap over it I’ve seen people dry it in open air and I’ve seen people put tin on it Soon I should have the option to keep it in doors if I wanted I’m gonna do some research the next couple of days and decide
Yeah, I have ripping chains now because I’ve done some chainsaw milling. You are right that the main thing was the direction of the cut but I think he is pretty aggressive at grinding his rakers as well Thanks for watching and commenting
They are better for most types of milling, but the chainsaw mill has some advantages For instance, width a wide chainsaw mill this could have been milled where it fell if you don’t have a way to lift 4000 pounds. Also a chainsaw mill could mill it at full width where as the bandsaw mill is limited to the width of the cutting head. In this case 22”
@@RockhillfarmYT totally agree with you. There is also a huge cost difference. I have never been sure if I would get my money back out of a bandsaw mill. However the current price of lumber is making that equation look a little different.
I’m right there with you on that. I decided to go ahead and order a bandsaw mill and when I went to place the order it said it would be almost a year wait time to get it so that’s why I have not ordered one yet because it’s such a long wait
@@RockhillfarmYT I had the same worry. Woodland Mills website showed they were on back order. I called their marketing department and ordered a mill anyway. Surprisingly it arrived less than a month later. I am glad I persevered because a recent storm here in the Sierra foothills blew down quite a few trees.
That’s a good question. I Imagine the person with the mill would have the rate? The guy in this video Agreed to do this for me at no charge just because we both have TH-cam channels and we wanted to make a video together. I ended up paying him $250 anyway because it felt like the right thing to do
@@RockhillfarmYT I have a ms 362 with the wrap handle bar . It cuts nice and works every time I wanna cut wood . Just like your ms 500i This one has the captive bar nuts on the side cover also !
@@RockhillfarmYT I understand what you were up to. Your gin pole has greater lifting leverage at the end of the logs. You would drag the opposite end on the ground.
I am getting some great wood for milling from the tree services I work with. Just bought an Alaskan mill. Going to TH-cam University now to learn milling. Thanks for the education.

I've got two big red oak logs not quite as long as yours. I just bought a 130M sawmill. Looking forward to wrastlin these big guys. Good video.

You should have trimmed the log before you put it on the mill that way there would be no way of hitting the bunks with the chain saw
I believe The long shavings are because he’s cutting the log lengthwise

It was about an inch of clearance after we cut it. All the pieces that were cut off got used

I couldn’t tell you exactly. The jacks were not made for a sawmill. i’m pretty sure he just bought them and put them on it

Some of the sawyers on here are using RV leveling Jack's, available at any Rv dealer, maybe at tractor supply or farm stores with trailer parts.

The reason for the chain saw shavings is because he is ripping the log with the grain they actually make a special chain for this

Some charge by the hour, some charge by the board foot or per thousand. It depends on the guy cutting.

I had it out, but he did most of the cutting so he felt more comfortable using his own saw

362 is a nice saw. I almost got one instead of the 391 but decided to save a little money that day
