97 - My Process Milling Logs - Part 1 | Woodland Mills Sawmill

- In this video, part 1 of 2 I walk you through my process to mill logs into dimensional lumber. Now this is generally a high level video on how I do my milling. There are a lot more detailed aspects to it but to keep things simple and to give an idea to others who never used a sawmill I just go over the basic process from prepping the log to the final product.

Spending time outdoors doing projects with various machines and tools - anything from cutting trees, firewood, clearing brush, milling wood, plowing snow, reviewing, repairing & fabricating equipment. Doing landscaping and maintenance on my forested property using my Kubota tractor.

Great job Paul i always try to haul my logs out in the winter when there is snow on the ground .Its keeps them clean and saves a few steps .Thanks for sharing have a great week

Thank you kindly Steve. It's a very high level review of my process to give others some insight. There is so much involved in milling from setting up the mill, maintenance, alignment issues, adjustments, wood species, blade issues, cutting methods, stacking, drying, scales, etc. The list goes on but it's very rewarding and enjoyable and your always learning. Good morning Paul! Thanks for taking the time to take us step by step. A couple ideas you might want to try - Guy hangs a 5 gallon bucket from the side of the mill to catch the sawdust. It works surprisingly well ( you will see it on my next video) _ it saves me having to clean up afterwards - LOL! Also, I am not sure if I captured it but he has wedges placed into each of the bed rails so when he needs to lift or support the ends to match the measurement, he puts a wedge (s) under it on the bedrail(s) instead of using a car jack. They always stay put. Thanks again - looking forward to part 2!
Good morning Gord and your welcome! Those are great ideas. I know several people that use a 5 gallon bucket on their mills and they really like it. I just have not got around to giving it a whirl. It's nice of Guy to use a bucket so that you don't have to clean up, LOL! I use some of my old felling wedges between the log clamps and freshly cut wood so that the clamps don't mark-up the wood and also to wedge under the logs on the bunks to either support the log from rolling or to raise it. Depending on the amount the log needs to be raised determines whether to use wedges or the car jack. Ultimately, a toe board is the best and I plan to install one at each end when I move my mill to it's new location. I will definitely check out your next video to see Guy's mill in action. Must be nice to move lumber with the grapple on the Kubota! Very cool setup you have there, nice video!
Thank you, the grapple is great for moving the logs. Pallet forks works better for moving the lumber that is milled.

Wow Paul you take great care of your equipment! I feel like washing the log and peeling the bark off the path of the blade would be require too much time for me, that's what blade sharpening is for he he!
I think that washing and peeling bark takes too much time up for most and your right, that is what blade sharpeners are for. I just like to pressure wash and use the log peeler more than sharpening blades. Thanks for stopping by Alex and have a great evening!

Good morning to you Sir! Thanks for the kind words. It's amazing how much more blade life can be obtained by having very clean cutting surfaces, yes it adds more work but I am not production milling where someone else ("the customer") is paying for the sawmill blades. Your correct, it is good brain work and safety comes first. I appreciate that you watched the entire video. Every video I watch I always watch it entirely. Great video. I’m looking at possibly getting the HM126 with trailer/winch kit. Thanks for posting this. Oh, do you find that your particular model has any trouble with hardwoods? I’m trying to decide between the 9 or 14 HP motor on the HM126.
Hi there and thank you. You will love the HM126. I don't have any issue with hardwood although I would recommend the 14hp over the 9hp. You'll get far better performance on larger diameter logs when making wide boards. You will be able to cut faster as well.

Thanks Tennessee Yankee, they are the Stihl Function Universal Safety Pants, and are made using 9 layers of ‘Avertic’ fibre which is lighter than Kevlar. I will look into putting a subscribe button at the end of my videos.

Well, you've a choice, either clean your logs well. or spend the time in sharpening dulled blades!!!! I prefer the former, cutting into a log full with gravel is NOT my kind of thing!@@JelenOutDoors
Excellent vid. Just on thing, why not make full use of the adjustable blade (band) guides? Move them as close as possible to the log, to stop "wandering" cuts!
PS: I use a cordless drill driver to adjust height of jack, way faster. What about water for lub and cooling?
I don't have a sharpener and it would cost too much to get the blades resharpened thus I clean the logs 1st. I keep all the used blades and whenever I get a sharpener.
Thanks! I have recently purchased an adjustable blade guide. I just need to install it. It definitely should provide a little more blade stability. I have replaced the jack with a toe board and have a drill to use with it. Much faster for sure. I always use Dawn Ultra dish soap and water to keep the blade cool and lubricated.
