I looked it up and calorie count is just the beginning of why Abby's goddess of war like build is frankly impossible. A body builder's diet is very strict not just in terms of required size, but complex of nutrition. Meats, veggies, fruits and nuts all have to be eaten religiously in carefully balanced levels with daily work outs all in a well kept schedule. If this game were set in a time not of immense scarcity, I wouldn't bat an eye at a woman whose' body looked like it was chizzled out of marble. But it is so I will.

The Class Armor for a female Dragoon in FFXIV comes to mind- These Are front-line fighters who go after big monsters with claws, horns, and fangs. You know what they need? @Ironbay Knight G On-top of that, Abby's physique is nothing short of impossible within the setting she is in. As people have said, it's not just supplements, it's still workout-filled days, 6-7 calorie-balanced/protein rich meals a day, 8-10hours of rest a day. It's completely unachievable given what we see in the game. And to top it off, it is waaaay more difficult for women to maintain that physique due to lower testosterone. This is a common theme in entertainment now though. Heaven forbid having an intelligent female character, let's just give them OP as fuck physical traits to start with and have everyone like them for it.
That whole Jim Sterling debacle had me fuming. Lack of perspective creates dimwitted and surface level takes. If jim took any time to try and understand the other side, he could have better arguments because he would know on some deeper level the people hes adressing and could be better suited to convince others of his position. But no, he has to dismiss and label, and the cycle continues into perpetuity.

I still can't believe how much of an incredible experience this was. I laughed, I cried, and in my SUBJECTIVE opinion, was one of the most enjoyable pieces of media I have had the pleasure of consuming and being a part of. Attacking people who point out the flaws with Abby's design is just intentional cherry-picking to discredit people who complain about the game while simultaneously virtue signaling as people love to do. It's by far one of the smallest issues with the game, but it's still an issue nonetheless. Say if the game was otherwise perfect in characterization and writing, far fewer people would care if she's a little off. But it's another thing to point and laugh at in regards to this trash fire. It also doesn't help that Naughty Dog and their "journalist" shills go on and on about how super realistic this game is, despite how unrealistic her body is. You also have Cuckmann having dumbass presentations where he shames characters like Cortana or Quiet and their creators for being sexist, objectified and bad characters. (The guy particularly seems to have a hate-boner for Kojima.) Then his brand new female role-model character is about as mannish as you can make her, to the point people thought she was the trans character back when the leaks happened. And it's a very obvious signifyer with these kinds of "woke culture" people that try their damnedest to make fictional female characters as un-feminine as possible. Because being overtly female and attractive is problematic to them. Similar to what happened in Mass Effect Andromeda when they had gone out of their way to make the female main character far uglier compared to the woman she was based off of. And this is coming from a guy that likes muscular women and wishes to see more in fiction, when it's appropriate. You obviously don't make them look like male body-builders in a resource-scarce post-apocalypse.

Couldn't agree more. I'm not into muscular women but I definitely love strong women. My number one favorite female character of all time is Casca from Berserk (particularly Golden Age arc Casca). She is beautiful and strong and tough as a block of titanium and she's got a fair amount of muscles because she is a soldier. But she is also feminine in appearance and you'd never mistake her for a man. There are ways to make a woman look strong and tough without making them look masculine and brutish. But I would also argue that this heavy push for masculine women is doing the very concept of femininity harm. The idea that women shouldn't be feminine is rather cruel to the natural proclivities of women. Most women like being feminine, they like having men take care of them in the classic gender role of protector. They don't want to be the ones smashing cockroaches or fighting off burglars because that does suck. However men do, at some level, enjoy such things. It fills us with purpose and the gratitude we receive from the women in our life is part of the reward for doing what we do. Women (at least from my experience) don't care much for gratitude when it comes to hard labor like that. I just don't think we should shame women for wanting to be feminine or try to convince them they are somehow deficient for wanting to be that way. Women are suffering from the demonization of their femininity as much as men are suffering from the demonization of their masculinity. What reason is there for women to appreciate and express their delicate side if they are going to be shamed for it? What reason is there for men to admire the beauty and gentle strength of women if they will be called dogs for doing so? And what point is there for us men to tend to this garden we call earth if no flowers bloom in it?
Yep. Besides, as the crew pointed out, Abby could be the hottest anime tier character ever and we'd still dislike her based on her actions in the game. Aydin says it, we're forced to play a character we don't like. And its not gender or looks, because Halo 5 had that problem. I wanted to play as Master Chief. The game wouldn't let me. I thus didn't like it. Everyone agreed with this argument then. But just because its Abby, I'm supposed to settle for crap because social commentary and politics. Get bent.
at 5:44:35 on the topic of Anita's research on Hitman. NOT ONLY is Anita's assertion that Hitman promotes violence toward woman is totally wrong, she is in fact the monster she claims the game is. The game never rewards you specifically for violence perpetrated towards women, your rewards come from successfully taking out your specified target while not harming civilians. It's so infuriating since in the very clip she fucking uses the player is penalized for attacking the woman they are committing the violent act against. That means in order to make her point Anita purposefully sought out a female victim, despite the game creating a great disincentive for that action, and then committed violence toward that female victim. Abby being in the post-apocalypse would be in the worst sort of setting and time for building a body like that. Scarcity of food, and exercise equipment would be two contributing factors, followed by the fact that she doesn't have time to pull an 8 to 12hr work out every day. She has things to do, like scouting, resource gathering, defending their territory, etc. We see that Abby has a lot of things to do, and her musculature if FAR in excess to what she would need to sprint, swim, climb, jump/leap, and even fight (especially given she has weapons/guns). There's no way she'd be built like that.

Yeah, that was a great point. In some stories it's obvious when characters act on knowledge they shouldn't have (even if the player does) but here it totally slipped my mind. The discrepancy between information the characters hold and information the player holds compared to the actions taken is so obvious. Maybe it's a case of not seeing the forest for the trees.
Weekend has this unique talent of blindsiding most of his audience with writing details that we don't really see the first time. Guy's pretty talented on the critical front.

I guess his point is that thinking Abby looks ugly isn't a good argument against the game. But for the most part I've seen insults towards Abby's appearance to generally be a minor point at best and used more as a joke.

However, even if someone were to say that was why they didn't like the game, I would argue that it's not at all out of line to complain that you don't like how a character looks when it's a visual medium and the game *forces you to look at that character for ten hours*. It's a subjective criticism, to be sure, but it does affect enjoyment of the product. "This game sucks because a girl has muscles!!"
Something interesting to keep in mind is if that a person does not like [thing X], they will be less likely to enjoy [aspect of thing X]. Some (probably most) people can't / don't want to spend the time to - articulate their full dislike for X. They will explain a single aspect they dislike instead. Then that is incorrectly taken to be their entire argument.

Im pretty familiar with bodybuilding. So i must say there’s no way Abby could have that amount of lean muscle with bodyfat that low, without steroids. I’ve seen muscular women, and they dont look like that, simply because it isn’t sustainable for a woman to have body fat as low as Abby seems to have. Not to mention the great amount of lean muscle mass, which is impossible for a natural woman. That amount of leanness and size is hard to maintain ever for a guy, and obviously men have multiple times more the testosterone women have.

I remember when if first got internet access back in the mid ‘90s, I went online looking for a move list for Samurai Shodown II. This is where I was first introduced to the wonderful world of FAQs. The one I found for the game was one of the exhaustive kind, which listed character bios and factoids. One of the factoids was about Tam Tam and how his weapon wouldn’t have been realistic for a Mayan warrior as they didn’t t have steel swords. And this was just one example of such things being pointed out in FAQs. 25 odd years ago. But gamers only started caring with the bemuscled atrocity that is Abby came along, did they, Jim?
The irony about Jim Sterling is that he became popular due to him exposing poor business practices in the game industry! It’s hilarious that he decides to defend a company who were accused of such practices solely because of his personal values. I couldn’t watch him anymore because of how flippant he is towards opposing viewpoints; so much so, that he constantly references how much he “doesn’t care” about these viewpoints!

Roud Tobi Mi I understand that I shouldn’t make claims if I don’t have the research to back it up; however, with EFAP softening the blow, I saw the whole video about Jim’s criticism on the consumer criticisms on Abby, and that video alone does not give me any confidence that Jim makes his judgements based on fact. For crying out loud, Jim said that he loved the first game and Joel before 2’s reveal; so why is he singing a different tune now? Abby is an embarrassment of a character and while she is definitely not much of a looker, she gets an absurd amount of convenient moments that fits in her favor: mostly because Ellie’s motives constantly flips like a light switch. Her behavior towards those that oppose her is absolutely disgusting: you think people will love to side with a person who relishes killing someone and never gains an ounce of guilt or regret afterwards. Abby had friends that all lost their lives due to her selfish desires, but the whole game portrays her as a lost saint through the use of cheap and manipulative writing. The fact that Jim will excuse the poor writing solely because Abby is an “unconventional” character is enough for me to understand that Jim can be an unreliable game journalist. In regards to this video, instead of trying to understand the objections of the consumer, he uses the comments of one or two jack@#$es to justify his claim that the people who hate Abby are bigoted. He may have ridiculed Naughty Dog’s action regarding the mistreatment of employees (beta testers were treated worst of all), but he also shouldn’t be giving Naughty Dog any brownie points for the existence of Abby. In fact, Abby is ironically the most insulting and offensive character ever conceived by Naughty Dog: no woman with that physique will ever attach themselves to Abby unless they are just as psychopathic as she is! You’re still right, though! I do have a tendency to overstep; but I have a gut feeling that Jim isn’t the industry messiah that he claims to be!

When he complained about the AAA industry's (mal)practices and everything, his socialist commentary was welcome and seemed to come from a good place. But these days he's gone so off the rails, it hurts to watch. So I truly understand where you're coming from. I still watch the videos of his whose titles suggest the least amount of lefty politics. And in my opinion it seems like Jim doesn't actually like TLOU II. I think he just gets upset about what's going on around the game (harassment of voice actors, Abby commentary etc.). Whenever he mentions the game in unrelated videos, it's used in comparison to games that do things better than TLOU II does them. Still, he's become quite insufferable. He has merged with the character that was originally supposed to be an exaggeratedly arrogant twat. Or maybe it's the same thing as with boogie, where the "exaggerated" character was the true self all along. And I'm definitely not here to defend the game or Jim's defence of Abby in his video, haha. I think they both deserve most of the criticism they get, but some nuances are lost in EFAPs and comments sections.

I looked it up and calorie count is just the beginning of why Abby's goddess of war like build is frankly impossible. A body builder's diet is very strict not just in terms of required size, but complex of nutrition. Meats, veggies, fruits and nuts all have to be eaten religiously in carefully balanced levels with daily work outs all in a well kept schedule. If this game were set in a time not of immense scarcity, I wouldn't bat an eye at a woman whose' body looked like it was chizzled out of marble. But it is so I will.

As people have said, it's not just supplements, it's still workout-filled days, 6-7 calorie-balanced/protein rich meals a day, 8-10hours of rest a day. It's completely unachievable given what we see in the game.

Attacking people who point out the flaws with Abby's design is just intentional cherry-picking to discredit people who complain about the game while simultaneously virtue signaling as people love to do. It's by far one of the smallest issues with the game, but it's still an issue nonetheless. Say if the game was otherwise perfect in characterization and writing, far fewer people would care if she's a little off. But it's another thing to point and laugh at in regards to this trash fire. It also doesn't help that Naughty Dog and their "journalist" shills go on and on about how super realistic this game is, despite how unrealistic her body is.
You also have Cuckmann having dumbass presentations where he shames characters like Cortana or Quiet and their creators for being sexist, objectified and bad characters. (The guy particularly seems to have a hate-boner for Kojima.) Then his brand new female role-model character is about as mannish as you can make her, to the point people thought she was the trans character back when the leaks happened. And it's a very obvious signifyer with these kinds of "woke culture" people that try their damnedest to make fictional female characters as un-feminine as possible. Because being overtly female and attractive is problematic to them. Similar to what happened in Mass Effect Andromeda when they had gone out of their way to make the female main character far uglier compared to the woman she was based off of.
And this is coming from a guy that likes muscular women and wishes to see more in fiction, when it's appropriate. You obviously don't make them look like male body-builders in a resource-scarce post-apocalypse.
They're desperate the paint the TLOU2 haters as being literally insane. The strawman's are beyond parody now. If your a woman who doesn't like Abby, it's only because you can't masterbate to her! Apparently it's just so simple!
Couldn't agree more. I'm not into muscular women but I definitely love strong women. My number one favorite female character of all time is Casca from Berserk (particularly Golden Age arc Casca). She is beautiful and strong and tough as a block of titanium and she's got a fair amount of muscles because she is a soldier. But she is also feminine in appearance and you'd never mistake her for a man. There are ways to make a woman look strong and tough without making them look masculine and brutish.
But I would also argue that this heavy push for masculine women is doing the very concept of femininity harm. The idea that women shouldn't be feminine is rather cruel to the natural proclivities of women. Most women like being feminine, they like having men take care of them in the classic gender role of protector. They don't want to be the ones smashing cockroaches or fighting off burglars because that does suck. However men do, at some level, enjoy such things. It fills us with purpose and the gratitude we receive from the women in our life is part of the reward for doing what we do. Women (at least from my experience) don't care much for gratitude when it comes to hard labor like that.
I just don't think we should shame women for wanting to be feminine or try to convince them they are somehow deficient for wanting to be that way. Women are suffering from the demonization of their femininity as much as men are suffering from the demonization of their masculinity.
What reason is there for women to appreciate and express their delicate side if they are going to be shamed for it? What reason is there for men to admire the beauty and gentle strength of women if they will be called dogs for doing so? And what point is there for us men to tend to this garden we call earth if no flowers bloom in it?
Yep. Besides, as the crew pointed out, Abby could be the hottest anime tier character ever and we'd still dislike her based on her actions in the game. Aydin says it, we're forced to play a character we don't like. And its not gender or looks, because Halo 5 had that problem. I wanted to play as Master Chief. The game wouldn't let me. I thus didn't like it. Everyone agreed with this argument then. But just because its Abby, I'm supposed to settle for crap because social commentary and politics. Get bent.

NOT ONLY is Anita's assertion that Hitman promotes violence toward woman is totally wrong, she is in fact the monster she claims the game is.
The game never rewards you specifically for violence perpetrated towards women, your rewards come from successfully taking out your specified target while not harming civilians. It's so infuriating since in the very clip she fucking uses the player is penalized for attacking the woman they are committing the violent act against.
That means in order to make her point Anita purposefully sought out a female victim, despite the game creating a great disincentive for that action, and then committed violence toward that female victim.

Abby being in the post-apocalypse would be in the worst sort of setting and time for building a body like that. Scarcity of food, and exercise equipment would be two contributing factors, followed by the fact that she doesn't have time to pull an 8 to 12hr work out every day. She has things to do, like scouting, resource gathering, defending their territory, etc. We see that Abby has a lot of things to do, and her musculature if FAR in excess to what she would need to sprint, swim, climb, jump/leap, and even fight (especially given she has weapons/guns). There's no way she'd be built like that.
Could have leaned into the full on villain and showed her starving the locals for a protein bulk.

Yeah, that was a great point. In some stories it's obvious when characters act on knowledge they shouldn't have (even if the player does) but here it totally slipped my mind.
The discrepancy between information the characters hold and information the player holds compared to the actions taken is so obvious. Maybe it's a case of not seeing the forest for the trees.

Catching up from the beginning really bring the wholesomeness of those animated intro to a whole 'nother level and when I'll be rewatching the third year anniversary with all the toxic context will be similar to be sure
Im pretty familiar with bodybuilding. So i must say there’s no way Abby could have that amount of lean muscle with bodyfat that low, without steroids.
I’ve seen muscular women, and they dont look like that, simply because it isn’t sustainable for a woman to have body fat as low as Abby seems to have. Not to mention the great amount of lean muscle mass, which is impossible for a natural woman.
That amount of leanness and size is hard to maintain ever for a guy, and obviously men have multiple times more the testosterone women have.
And food is supposed to be scarce

I remember when if first got internet access back in the mid ‘90s, I went online looking for a move list for Samurai Shodown II. This is where I was first introduced to the wonderful world of FAQs. The one I found for the game was one of the exhaustive kind, which listed character bios and factoids. One of the factoids was about Tam Tam and how his weapon wouldn’t have been realistic for a Mayan warrior as they didn’t t have steel swords. And this was just one example of such things being pointed out in FAQs.

That's great. If you aren't willing to put in the time to sift through his videos and find his criticism, you can do that. But you should then also agree that you aren't one to make any claims on what Jim comments on and what not.

I understand that I shouldn’t make claims if I don’t have the research to back it up; however, with EFAP softening the blow, I saw the whole video about Jim’s criticism on the consumer criticisms on Abby, and that video alone does not give me any confidence that Jim makes his judgements based on fact. For crying out loud, Jim said that he loved the first game and Joel before 2’s reveal; so why is he singing a different tune now?
Abby is an embarrassment of a character and while she is definitely not much of a looker, she gets an absurd amount of convenient moments that fits in her favor: mostly because Ellie’s motives constantly flips like a light switch. Her behavior towards those that oppose her is absolutely disgusting: you think people will love to side with a person who relishes killing someone and never gains an ounce of guilt or regret afterwards. Abby had friends that all lost their lives due to her selfish desires, but the whole game portrays her as a lost saint through the use of cheap and manipulative writing.
The fact that Jim will excuse the poor writing solely because Abby is an “unconventional” character is enough for me to understand that Jim can be an unreliable game journalist. In regards to this video, instead of trying to understand the objections of the consumer, he uses the comments of one or two jack@#$es to justify his claim that the people who hate Abby are bigoted. He may have ridiculed Naughty Dog’s action regarding the mistreatment of employees (beta testers were treated worst of all), but he also shouldn’t be giving Naughty Dog any brownie points for the existence of Abby. In fact, Abby is ironically the most insulting and offensive character ever conceived by Naughty Dog: no woman with that physique will ever attach themselves to Abby unless they are just as psychopathic as she is!
You’re still right, though! I do have a tendency to overstep; but I have a gut feeling that Jim isn’t the industry messiah that he claims to be!

I used to be quite a "fan" of his videos. When he complained about the AAA industry's (mal)practices and everything, his socialist commentary was welcome and seemed to come from a good place. But these days he's gone so off the rails, it hurts to watch. So I truly understand where you're coming from.
I still watch the videos of his whose titles suggest the least amount of lefty politics. And in my opinion it seems like Jim doesn't actually like TLOU II. I think he just gets upset about what's going on around the game (harassment of voice actors, Abby commentary etc.). Whenever he mentions the game in unrelated videos, it's used in comparison to games that do things better than TLOU II does them.
Still, he's become quite insufferable.
He has merged with the character that was originally supposed to be an exaggeratedly arrogant twat. Or maybe it's the same thing as with boogie, where the "exaggerated" character was the true self all along.
And I'm definitely not here to defend the game or Jim's defence of Abby in his video, haha. I think they both deserve most of the criticism they get, but some nuances are lost in EFAPs and comments sections.
It’s been a really rough couple of months for me lately, just recently got laid off from my job, mental health issues, and just general shitty events in personal life. Personally ive never found muscular women attractive, not even just a six pack. I prefer my women to be soft. I had a friend who thought hard ab muscles on a woman were a huge turn on. Its crazy how varied peoples tastes are when it comes to the things they find attractive. But nah, if you dont find an unconventional woman attractive its all about unrealistic beauty standards and sexism or woman hating. Ugh
