      Unfortunately everyone here expects you to know German even if you just landed in Germany. Arrive Germany, go to the immigration office (of course because you are a foreigner who may need processing to live on long term basis) and you are told at the window "Das ist Deutschland" and the guy refuses to speak English. Extremely ironic that they won't speak English at the entrance of an office that is exclusively for the foreigners. Visa officers do speak some English though.

    The question is, can you be proud of someone else's achievement? I think we can, if we have a connection, a relationship, with them. A teacher can be proud of his students, children can be proud of their parents, fans can be proud of their sports team, and so on.
    If you are able to be empathetic, you can find joy and pride in the achievements of others.

      How could I possibly feel proud of something on which I had no agency at all? as a matter of fact, we do commonly claim to be proud of someone else's achievements but that's rather a loose way to express some other feelings like admiration, recognition, etc.
      If I feel proud of my students or the sport team I'm fan of it is because I do think of myself as playing some kind of role in their merits.

      Shiva Pazoki I'm glad that you made good experiences with Germans as people, however don't think that the German government really did a good job of learning a lesson - they keep denying atrocities that were commited all around Europe so that they don't have to pay any reparations (actually, these reparations were unilaterally declared closed after 1990, leaving out a lot of countries that have rightfully demanded payback from WWII).
      An interesting wrap-up of this for Greece was given in a well-known German satire:
      th-cam.com/video/3zUrHvjRRUs/w-d-xo.html
      Also, the genoicde of the Herero and Nama in Namibia around 1905 was never acknowledged by any German government as such (to avoid reparations, of course).
      I think this stereotype of Germans doing a good job in acknowledging their past crimes is put in place by our Government who does not want to lose money, money that belongs to these whose lives are still affected by the suffering of their ancestors.

    • @shivapazoki1881
      @shivapazoki1881 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      May be yes may be no but i think rather than concentrating on the crimes carried on done and dusted 110 years ago, perhaps it would be more fruitful if we concentrated on crimes being carried on by other goverments as we are typing these words. environmental destruction and pollution, the greatest mass sale of weapons of mass distruction in the history of humanity to the Saudi arabia by the USA just a year ago, selling chemical weapons to Sadam to bomb Iranian and Iraqi kurds during the Iran Iraq war .... the list is endless. I guess the world would have been a much better place if nations and governments had learnt from their past just as much as germans. they may not be perfect but they sure have done a lot better than most others

      Germany also contributed lots of death, and even nowadays is selling loads of weapons (and that is when even folding knives are illegal inside the country). I think we should look towards the future and I believe that the future is one with less borders, not more. I don't really care about nationalism and national pride. The only reason I care about being German is that I get special treatment in Germany because of my nationality, and this makes it an interesting place for me to take residence. It also means that I would pay taxes and contribute to whatever the German state is doing, including facilitating weapon sales. Therefore I feel concerned about what Germany does as a state or country. It has nothing to do with pride. Who cares about national pride? Not me. I am old enough to have built myself a complex and unique identity, I don't need to stand behind a flag to feel like I have an identity and belong to something (anymore). I am impressed by what the tall dark-haired lady among the 3 ladies said, I also find it sexy when a women is smart and wise.

    As Mexican living in Germany I have had the opportunity to talk with many Germans about this and other topics, and in my experience (life?) for a Mexican it's a very simple question, we can enlist easily the things that "make" us feel proud as the traditional food, the folklore music, the arts, the regional dances, the living traditions, the ancient civilizations as Maya or Aztec -who are part of our ancestors-, our tequila, our mole, our tacos, our Día de Los Muertos, our humor, the family blah blah blah... At least, that kind of things, that we didn't invent or create, make us feel good, make us feel at home, make us feel proud to be Mexicans.
    From my perspective, I think the Germans have an incommensurable amount of things to feel proud of, obviously I know, is a delicate and generational topic; Anyway, you shouldn't pay much attention to what the people could say or think, you have created a great country.

    It seems that the majority of Germans are smart. They went through a lot and felt the danger of "being proud" of your own nationality. I think that you can admire your own culture and share that in a positive way with the world, but I find this "distance" (or at least a critical stance) very healthy. In that sense, it becomes a paradox, where I think that Germans should be "proud of not being proud" of their country. That is what makes Germany so special nowadays.

    • @EasyGerman
      @EasyGerman  6 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      You are right with that I think. We have had many people write us before that they thought it was a shame that Germans can not feel proud of their country no more because of their history. I wouldn't agree to that view. For the older genererations shame has been a very prominent feeling (for good reasons), for the younger generations I think they wouldn't necessarily feel shame. They would rather not miss patriotism at all, cause they have never actually felt it and they haven't seen anything positive in it, neither in the history nor in the presence.
      Many Germans are happy (or even proud) that Germany has developed in a positive direction after WWII and that it has learned it's lesson.

      my country is stupidly patriotic (Philippines) and to m it just seems down right fascist. they get sooo triggered when other countries criticize the pihilippines, even with constructive criticism. The worst part is that the majority of the filipinos in online comment sections respond childishly and unintelligently brusque, that is to say most of their arguments are trash talk and no substance. I do belive that patriotism is one of the greatest factors that can turn a country into a shit-hole. A country can be great, too, without being as patriotic.

      Honestly, for me it's not about shame, but about the responsibility to remember and never forget about what happened and how inhumane a society can be even if it's just by looking away.
      I think nowadays the schools (at least the "Gymnasium" I went to) do a pretty good job at teaching us about the Holocaust and the Third Reich and honestly I think it's extremely important that they do, our generation needs to know the past so we can learn from it. We read a play called "Die Ermittlung" which is based directly on the protocols of the Frankfurt Auschwitz Trials and it was just so disgusting to see what actual people can do to others and some of them still being arrogant or not even showing remorse. At least today's Germany is open about its history and doesn't brush it under a rug.
      About the patriotism, I'm grateful and I feel lucky to be living in Germany, but I'm not proud to be German as others said it's not an achievement just a fact. I do appreciate the country and the opportunities I have and really like it here but that's about it.

      Außerdem wird National"gefühl" oftmals missbraucht, um andere zu diskriminieren; daher haben viele Deutsche ein sehr schlechtes Bild im Kopf, wenn sie jemanden grundlos mit einer deutschen Flagge sehen. (ich mag es z.B. auch nicht :) )

    As a Jew from a former German family (you can guess why "former"), Germans have a lot to be proud of. No other country has acknowledged their horrific past the way Germany has.
    Many countries have done horrible things that are swept under the rug. Japan and the Pacific theatre, the Armenian Genocide by the Ottomans, hell even the predominently French and British imperialism which has caused conflicts primarily in the Middle-East and in Africa that have lasted to this very day.
    We don't arrest children for what their parents did. It's our job to remember the bad things our forerunners have done and ensure that it never happens again.

Lots of love and respect, my name is Manfred, nice to meet you, Sorry about this long message but I just had to say that from the deep of my heart!

      @kal Ke You are right, however German language is the most spoken language in Europe but unfortunately it is not as easy and intuitive as English! However if you are young (I suppose) and quite determined, why not? You will be successful! The best of luck, meanwhile this might motivate you even more? 😉 th-cam.com/video/06YvNPAD2lg/w-d-xo.html

    Also, Ich bin geborene Amerikaner.

      Francisco Batista it’s only a matter of time before they get assimilated into the German culture. Religion[muslims] won’t last long with the progression of science, all religion will be obsolete. As for the blacks it’s only a matter of evolution to become one single “breed” of human. The progress may take long, or it may not. The world is going to change and there’s not much we can do, we’ll be dust since we can’t live forever and our descendants will choose their own paths.

      Avery Holt I corrected myself when answering @So Who’s the Dummy Now?
      As he said “be proud of the past, as without it, and the generations before you, you would have nothing to build on”
      And as I mentioned later on, none of this will matter in 2 centuries. My comment will be an obsolete thing and the descendants will have different beliefs.

    I wonder if those who argue that Germans should have no pride in Germany because they did not make it personally, also feel that they should have no discomfort as to what the nation did during WW2?

    • @teof99
      @teof99 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It's not about discomfort. I don't think any German feels personally responsible for WW2 and Holocaust. Instead, it's important to constantly remember those crimes as a negative example for what a society must never become like again.
