You can achieve the same thing by using aluminum foil and no solder. You're basically just increasing the contact patch instead of running through the coil of thr spring you're allowing more current to pass through allowing a brighter light. Also shortens your LED life span.

Much easier to solder and a much better bond if you heat the spring and wire and let them melt the solder. If you only heat and melt the solder, it will not adhere as well and it will be hard to get it to stick at all until the hot solder heats the wire/spring enough. That's why the first attempt caused the solder to fall from the intended connection point. "Tinning" the soldering iron helps transfer heat to the place that you want the solder to melt and stay put.
