Greetings from Mumbai. Thanks to PIDE and Dr Nadeem Ul Haque for arranging this wonderful conversation. Have been following Dr Ayesha Jalal on social media and her writings as I found her to be backing her statements with convincing reasoning, not sure how much of that is based on hard facts / data duly verified by others . But nevertheless , admire her scholastic presentation and diff view point from others.
But found some parts of this talk of her to be disappointing . Her often repeated argument that Jinnah/Muslim League fought for partition as they were denied guarantee in equitable representation in power sharing in united India after British left and not becauseof two-National theory ( wasn’t the main driver behind partition) pushed by Jinnah as on 16th Aug 1946 as part of Direct Action call .
But this argument falls flat ,as one can see neither Jinnah nor his peers in Muslim league ever worked towards equitable sharing of power within Pakistani muslim groups be that East pakistan or Balochistan or KP. 1971 event was mainly due to West Pakistan (being in minority) denied power to East Pakistanis, who had won elections !! Apprehensions of Congress and other parties in India in 1940s about real intentions of Jinnah and Muslim league came true. Even today , Pakistan refusing to come out of that mindset of majoritarianism while dealing with Balochis or Sindhis or other sectarians groups like Ahmediyas etc. even after 75 years. Pakistanis yet to come to consensus about their identity , some times they look towards Arabs, other times Turks etc..but in reality they forget , most of Pakistanis are mostly converted from Hindus or Buddhists or Jains or Sikhs over centuries.
Her belittling of Indian constitution by saying its copy of british etc ..shows how “small” she has turned into. India's Constituent Assembly sat for the first time on 9th December 1946. Over the next 2 years and 11 months, the Assembly sat for a total of 166 days to frame the Indian Constitution. The final session of the Constituent Assembly took place on 24th January 1950. Constitution was approved on 26th Jan 1950. She is far from true that Nehru pushed agenda and got constitution by force. It was hotly debated , getting diverse views from all groups..be that Left or Right or Centre etc.

One problem is that most Muslims are defensive of Islam. They think everyone is conspiring against them. They have the right to seek equality in non-muslim states while supporting all forms of discrimination against the 'kafurs'. Ayesha is just one of them.

34:10 Jalal - we do not have historical consciousness.
Madame, Pakistan has no history - ergo, missing consciousness.

Very interesting discussion Listening tor the wonderful articulation of her world view , she comes across as a sole spokesperson for Jinnah, Islam & Pakistan (not necessarily in that order). If any, she sounds more like a savvier version of Syed Zaid Hamid. Her nonchalantly brushing off Ishtiaq Ahmed 's version and attributing lack of success of Pakistani Americans to Islamophobia indeed take the cake.

We had a joke during the Zia era:
Khomeni and Zia asked God when peace and prosperity would come to their respective countries.
God told Khomeni ‘Nit in your lifetime, leaving Khomeni very sad. To Zia God said ‘Not in my lifetime’ That seems quite true

She is anti-hindu/anti-india to the core. He hatred is one her face . Just look at her face when she brings india to compare it with Pakistan.
And about ISHTIAQ ahmed , she try to dismiss him is classic case of avoidance. Ishtiaq Ahmed has more correct arguments whereas she is a propagandist

Often future is projected on the basis of past database, but in today's rapid changing and unpredictable world, it's not easy to evaluate accurate projections or forecast.

Madam and Sir, conversion as a major aspect of Indian subcontinent history has been totally ignored either by design or ignorance in the bifurcation part of india. In fact a lot of current problems can be resolved once enough attention is devoted to this aspect.

The host doesn't know how to be a host for such an interview. Instead of conducting a dialogue, the entire video turned into a monologue. A fitting portrait of a failed and bankrupt state of Pakistan: "Ill-prepared and ill-equipped." One wishes to have different men present at the crime scene during the partition of India in 1947. One wishes to have a past with some intellectual content rather than a past with no intellectual content. Result? Pygmies march on either in civilian or military outfit.

Jinnah's stand against 'monolithic sovereignty" (endorsed by Ayesha) needs some careful reflection . The Congress perspective was not only in tune with the modern trend with the emergence of nation-states since the late 17th century but also from the understanding of the history of pre-Islamic India . The epics of Ramayana & Mahabharatha, Ashokan edicts and the Mutts of Shankaracharya , among others, point out to the concept of Indian sub-continent as a united cultural and civilizational entity with a concrete basis for nationhood. The last 75 years, if any, has vindicated this faith.

Interesting discussion, but with the usual mantra of false repeated arguments.
Ayesha has done well to introduce certain original thinking into our historical perspective but even she is lacking in many ways.
If we continue to view pre and post 1947 India in the same light, we continue to repeat lies.
The false understanding of India as a historical nation is factually incorrect, it was always only just a region, nothing more. But, in discussions this is never made clear. And the false narrative of partition keeps getting repeated in a lazy manner.
Pakistan and India gained independence, partitioned only applies to the Punjab and Bengal.
India's political reality had only come about a decade prior to independence, because the British allowed demands for home rule in their conquered Region of India. With the evolution of home rule, a political entity of India was created.
The constant repetition of narratives based on lies amounts to telling lies. That's a shame.
